Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Name
Vanessa Reed had spent years learning how to recognize powerful people.
She knew the difference between a businessman who rented a private suite and one who owned the building. She knew which politicians expected to be addressed by their titles, which celebrities disliked photographs, and which wealthy guests could make a telephone call that changed someone's career before breakfast.
She had built her reputation on being seen beside the right people.
Yet as Daniel Brooks straightened from his bow, Vanessa found herself staring at the man whose jacket she had just humiliated on the floor.
Sylvester Stallone.
The name was familiar, of course. Everyone knew the legendary actor. His films had played in theaters for decades, and his face was recognizable even to people who had never watched a full movie.
But Vanessa had never imagined encountering him this way.
Not in a champagne-stained shirt.
Not standing quietly in the middle of a hotel lobby.
And certainly not after she had ordered him outside like an unwanted delivery driver.
She forced a laugh.
“Oh,” she said, brushing imaginary dust from her dress.
“Well, that explains the attitude.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Excuse me?””
Vanessa smiled too quickly.
“I simply didn't recognize him. There was a misunderstanding.””
Stallone looked at the broken vase.
“Was there?””
His question was so quiet that Vanessa almost wished he had shouted.
She recovered by lifting her chin.
“I was trying to protect the atmosphere of the hotel. You have no idea how many people wander into places like this pretending to belong.””
Daniel's gloved fingers tightened around the small notepad he carried.
“Mrs. Reed,” he said, “this is not the time.””
“Don't tell me when it's time to speak.”” Vanessa glanced at the guests.
“I was concerned about security. Surely that's reasonable.””
A man in a charcoal suit near the reception desk shook his head.
“You poured champagne on him,” he said.
Vanessa turned sharply.
“And who asked you?””
“No one,” the man replied.
“I just watched you do it.””
A woman beside him added, “You also told the receptionist she didn't matter.””
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
“People are taking this completely out of context.””
Stallone finally looked at Daniel.
“Now tell them who this hotel belongs to.””
The manager's posture became even more formal.
Vanessa felt the floor tilt beneath her heels.
She had attended charity dinners in this building. She had hosted business lunches in its private dining room. She had posed beneath the enormous chandelier for photographs that she later posted with captions about excellence, success, and knowing one's worth.
She had never bothered to ask who owned the property.
Why would she?
The staff had always opened doors for her.
The concierge had memorized her preferred room temperature. The restaurant manager had arranged tables whenever she requested them. She had mistaken excellent service for personal authority.
Daniel turned to face the gathering.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “Mr. Stallone is not merely a returning guest. He is the principal owner of this hotel.””
A murmur passed through the lobby.
Vanessa's lips parted.
Daniel continued, his voice measured.
“He established the ownership group responsible for acquiring and renovating this property. His investment made the hotel's reopening possible, and he has remained personally involved in several major decisions regarding its operation.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“That can't be right.””
Daniel didn't blink.
“It is entirely correct, ma'am.””
“But I've been told the property belongs to the Hawthorne Hospitality Group.””
“It does,” Daniel replied.
“Mr. Stallone is the controlling owner of the group.””
Someone near the elevators whispered, “Oh, my God.””
Vanessa's face had gone pale beneath her carefully applied makeup.
Stallone glanced toward Emily at the reception desk.
“Has anyone called security?””
Emily hesitated.
“No, sir.””
“Why not?””
She looked briefly at Vanessa.
“Because I thought she would complain if I did.””
The answer hung in the air.
Vanessa gave a short, offended laugh.
“This is absurd. I was trying to maintain standards. Anyone in my position would have done the same.””
Stallone studied her.
“Your position?””
Vanessa straightened her shoulders.
“My family has supported this hotel for years. We bring business here. We attend the most important events. I know people on the board.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Mrs. Reed, attending events does not give you authority over our employees.””
“I never said it did.””
“You threatened to have Miss Carter fired.””
“Because she was disrespectful.””
Emily finally looked up.
“I offered to help him.””
“And you interrupted me,” Vanessa snapped.
Stallone raised one hand slightly.
Vanessa stopped speaking, not because he had shouted, but because everyone else had become silent.
He looked at Emily.
“Did she ask you to treat me differently because she believed I wasn't important?””
Emily swallowed.
“Yes, sir.””
“And have you seen this happen before?””
The receptionist looked toward Daniel, who gave her a small, encouraging nod.
“Yes,” she admitted.
“Not always with guests. Sometimes with delivery workers. Sometimes with people who come in asking for directions.
Mrs. Reed has complained about staff helping people she considers beneath the hotel's standards.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That is a lie.””
Emily flinched, but she continued.
“Last month, you demanded that the concierge move a family away from the lobby seating because their children were wearing sneakers. The family was waiting for a taxi. You told him the hotel wasn't a bus station.””
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Vanessa's fingers curled around the remaining stem of her champagne glass.
“That family was making a mess.””
“They were drinking water,” Emily replied.
“Enough!””
Her voice cracked across the marble lobby.
Daniel stepped between Vanessa and the reception desk.
“Mrs. Reed, please lower your voice.””
Vanessa stared at him as if he had betrayed her personally.
“Daniel, I've recommended this hotel to dozens of people. I have brought in clients worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Surely you understand that one unfortunate misunderstanding should not outweigh all of that.””
“An unfortunate misunderstanding?”” Daniel repeated.
He gestured toward the shattered vase.
Then toward Stallone's stained shirt.
Then toward Emily.
“You poured champagne on the owner of the property, threatened a member of my staff, and created a disturbance in front of our guests.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“I did not know who he was!””
Stallone answered before Daniel could.
“Would that have made it acceptable if you hadn't?””
She froze.
The question was simple.
It left her nowhere to hide.
Stallone picked up his jacket from the floor and examined the damp sleeve. He didn't ask for an apology. He didn't threaten to call a lawyer. He didn't mention his fame or his wealth.
He simply handed the jacket to Daniel.
“Please have someone take care of this.””
“Of course, sir.””
“And the vase?””
“I'll arrange for the damage to be documented.””
Stallone nodded.
“Good.””
Vanessa stared at him, waiting for the explosion she had expected from a man she had publicly humiliated.
It never came.
Instead, he turned toward the receptionist.
“Miss Carter, how long have you worked here?””
“Three years, sir.””
“Do you enjoy your job?””
Her eyes widened.
“Yes. I do.””
“Then you should be able to do it without being threatened for helping someone.””
Emily pressed her lips together, struggling to keep her composure.
“Thank you, sir.””
Vanessa looked from one face to another. The guests who had watched her pour the champagne were no longer pretending not to notice her. Some looked disappointed. Others looked openly disgusted.
She reached for the one defense she still believed might work.
“My husband will hear about this.””
Daniel's expression changed.
Stallone looked at her.
“Your husband?””
“Yes.”” Vanessa lifted her chin again, though her hand was shaking.
“Richard Reed. He has business dealings with this property. I suggest you speak with him before making any decisions you'll regret.””
Daniel slowly lowered his notepad.
For the first time since he had entered the lobby, he looked genuinely concerned.
Not for Stallone.
Not for Emily.
For Vanessa.
Because Richard Reed wasn't simply a wealthy businessman who attended the hotel's events.
He had a pending contract with the ownership group.
And Vanessa had just threatened to involve him in a situation he knew nothing about.
Stallone noticed Daniel's expression.
“What is it?”” he asked.
The manager hesitated.
“Sir, there's something you should know about Mr. Reed's business dealings with the hotel.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“Daniel, don't you dare.””
Stallone turned fully toward the manager.
“Go on.””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa, then lowered his voice.
“Your wife may have just complicated the negotiations that were supposed to be finalized tonight.””
Vanessa's champagne glass slipped slightly in her grip.
May you like
Because she suddenly remembered exactly why Richard had insisted she attend the hotel's private reception.
And it had nothing to do with champagne.
