Chapter 8: The Recording from Midnight

The private conference room overlooked the city, its floor-to-ceiling windows reflecting the warm lights of the hotel interior.

By the time Stallone, Eleanor Price, Margaret Ellis, Daniel Brooks, Richard, and Vanessa entered, the board chair had arranged for the room to be secured and the relevant documents brought upstairs.

A bowl of untouched fruit sat on the conference table.

Six glasses of water stood beside it.

Nobody reached for them.

The flash drive rested inside a clear evidence sleeve that Margaret had taken from the hotel's security office. She had documented when and where it was received, then arranged for a secure copy to be made without altering the original.

Richard stood near the window.

He had refused to sit.

Vanessa sat at the opposite end of the table, her handbag resting on her lap. Her wedding ring remained inside it.

Stallone took the chair at the head of the table but didn't begin speaking until everyone else had settled.

“Before we review anything,” he said, “I want to be clear about one thing. We are not going to assume that a recording proves wrongdoing simply because someone sent it to us. We need to establish where it came from, whether it's authentic, and what it actually shows.””

Margaret nodded.

“Agreed. The original file should be preserved, and any analysis should be conducted by an independent specialist.””

Eleanor looked at Richard.

“Do you object to reviewing a copy of the recording?””

Richard hesitated.

“I object to treating an anonymous delivery as reliable evidence.””

“That isn't what we're doing,” Stallone replied.

“We're examining a lead.””

Richard finally pulled out a chair.

“Fine.””

Margaret connected the secure copy to the conference room's computer. The screen displayed a single video file with a timestamp in its metadata.

March 14.

11:47 p.m.

Vanessa felt her fingers grow cold.

“That was the night Richard came home late.””

Richard stared at the screen.

“I know.””

Margaret looked toward Stallone.

“Shall we proceed?””

He nodded.

The video began with a view of an office.

Vanessa recognized the room immediately.

It was Martin Cole's office, the same room she had visited the previous spring. A desk lamp illuminated a stack of folders, a silver laptop, and a framed photograph of a sailboat.

The image was slightly grainy but clear enough to distinguish the people.

Richard sat on one side of the desk.

Martin stood beside a filing cabinet, holding several sheets of paper.

And a third person sat just outside the camera's central frame.

A woman's hand was visible beside a black handbag.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“That isn't me.””

Richard turned sharply.

“What?””

“That handbag. I don't own one like that.””

Margaret paused the video.

“We should avoid drawing conclusions from one detail. Let's continue.””

The recording resumed.

Martin placed the papers on the desk.

“The account structure is ready,” he said.

Richard leaned back.

“And the registration?””

“Filed this afternoon.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Without the final authorization?””

Martin shrugged.

“The initial filing didn't require it. The supporting authorization can be attached later.””

Richard lowered his voice.

“You told me the authorization would be signed first.””

“I told you we could complete the paperwork before the deadline.””

“That isn't the same thing.””

Martin tapped the papers.

“The company has already been registered. The account is active. We have the transfer instructions.””

Richard looked toward the woman seated outside the frame.

“What about Vanessa?””

Martin followed his gaze.

“She'll sign the remaining documents when you give them to her.””

Vanessa felt the room tilt.

She looked at Richard.

“You knew the company was registered before I signed.””

Richard stared at the screen.

“I need to see the whole recording.””

“Answer me,” she said.

He didn't turn.

“Please, Vanessa.””

The request sounded so unlike him that she almost fell silent.

But she had spent the entire evening being asked to wait, to trust, to stop asking questions.

Not anymore.

“You knew.””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

“I knew the registration had been started.””

“Was my name on it?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's hand tightened around her handbag.

“Before I signed?””

“Yes.””

The word seemed to drain the air from the room.

She sat very still.

For years, she had believed that the worst thing a spouse could do was lie about money, another relationship, or a decision that affected their future.

She was discovering something worse.

Richard had placed her name inside a financial arrangement before asking her permission, then presented the paperwork as routine.

She looked at the screen again.

“What happens next?””

Margaret resumed the recording.

Martin sat down opposite Richard.

“The payment has been scheduled,” he said.

“Once the development agreement is signed, Northstar will receive the second installment.””

“And Westbridge?””

“Westbridge will receive its consulting fee.””

Richard leaned forward.

“How much?””

Martin named an amount that made Eleanor's eyebrows rise.

Richard rubbed his chin.

“And the rest?””

“Allocated according to the schedule.””

Richard looked toward the unseen woman.

“Does she know?””

Martin gave a small laugh.

“Not yet.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“She needs to know what she's signing.””

Martin lifted both hands.

“Then tell her. I'm not stopping you.””

“You told me this was a standard consulting arrangement.””

“It is.””

“Then why are you avoiding a direct answer?””

Martin leaned back.

“Because you're the one who wanted the arrangement completed before the board meeting.””

Richard went silent.

Vanessa stared at him.

On the screen, the woman outside the frame shifted in her chair.

Her voice was faint but audible.

“What happens if she refuses?””

Martin turned toward her.

“Then we'll need another authorization structure.””

Richard shook his head.

“She won't refuse if I explain it properly.””

Vanessa's breath caught.

The woman spoke again.

“And if you don't explain it?””

Richard looked directly at Martin.

“Then we make sure she doesn't have a reason to worry.””

The recording continued for several seconds.

Then the image froze.

A message appeared on the screen indicating that the file had reached its end.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was so complete that Vanessa could hear the faint hum of the ventilation system.

Richard stared at the black screen.

Eleanor broke the silence first.

“Who was the woman?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You don't know?””

“I can't identify her from that angle.””

Margaret made a note.

“We should preserve the original audio and obtain an expert assessment of the recording's authenticity.””

Stallone looked at Richard.

“What did you mean when you said you would make sure Vanessa didn't have a reason to worry?””

Richard's face reddened.

“I was trying to reassure Martin that the paperwork would be completed.””

“Without explaining the arrangement?””

“I intended to explain it.””

“When?””

Richard looked away.

“I don't remember.””

Vanessa let out a short, disbelieving breath.

“You remember negotiating the payments. You remember the registration. You remember that I was going to sign the documents. But you don't remember when you intended to tell me what they were?””

Richard turned toward her.

“Vanessa, I never intended to hurt you.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He lowered his voice.

“I thought the arrangement was temporary. I thought we'd restructure it once the development was approved.””

“Why did you use my name?””

“Because Martin said the structure would make the consulting payments easier to process.””

“Why my name?””

Richard looked at Stallone, then at Eleanor.

“I need to speak with my lawyer.””

Margaret nodded.

“That would be sensible. We aren't asking you to waive your right to legal advice.””

Richard seemed relieved for a moment.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“But the board will not approve the development agreement while these questions remain unresolved.””

Richard's relief vanished.

“You can't make that decision based on an anonymous recording.””

“We aren't,” Eleanor said.

“We're considering the recording alongside the corporate filings, the payment records, and your own statements about the arrangement.””

Richard stood abruptly.

“This is a setup.””

Stallone remained seated.

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

“Then let's find out.””

Richard paced toward the window.

“Someone has deliberately sent these documents here tonight. Someone wants the contract suspended.””

“That may be true,” Stallone said.

“But it doesn't explain why your company records contain the names and payments we're discussing.””

Richard spun around.

“Because complicated deals involve complicated structures!””

“Then explain the structure.””

“I've told you everything I know.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“No, you haven't.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She rose slowly.

“Did you know Martin planned to use my signature before the registration was filed?””

Richard looked at her.

On the screen, the final image of the office remained frozen, showing his face turned toward the unseen woman.

He had been given a chance to answer the question before.

Now the recording had answered it for him.

He knew her name would be used.

He knew the registration had been filed.

And he had allowed Vanessa to believe she was signing routine documents afterward.

Richard lowered his head.

“I knew the registration had been filed.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Did you know my signature would be attached to it?””

He didn't answer.

“Richard!””

“Yes,” he whispered.

Vanessa stepped backward as though he had physically struck her.

Eleanor looked down at her notes.

Margaret stopped typing.

Stallone watched Richard for a long moment.

Then he asked the question nobody else had yet thought to ask.

“Who was the woman in the recording?””

Richard looked up.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You're lying.””

“I can't identify her from that footage.””

“You were sitting across from her.””

“The camera doesn't show her face.””

“Then tell us why she was there.””

Richard looked toward the window.

His reflection stared back at him, pale and strained.

“She was involved in the financing discussions.””

“Who?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I don't want to name someone without being certain.””

Margaret closed her notebook.

“Then we need the original file, the office's camera records, and a verified account of who attended the meeting.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Agreed.””

Stallone looked at Daniel, who had remained near the door.

“Please make sure the original flash drive remains secured. No one should remove or copy it without documenting the process.””

“Of course, sir.””

Richard looked exhausted now.

He sat down heavily.

“I never intended for any of this to happen.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Then why did you do it?””

He stared at his hands.

“Because the project was running out of time. The financing was delayed, the investors were losing confidence, and the board wanted additional assurances. Martin said he could arrange the money if we used the right structure.””

“And you agreed.””

“I thought I could fix it later.””

“You used my identity because you thought you could fix it later?””

Richard's eyes filled with frustration.

“I thought it was paperwork.””

Vanessa's voice became quiet.

“To you, perhaps.””

She picked up her handbag.

“I was the one whose name was on it.””

For a moment, Richard seemed ready to reach for her.

He stopped himself.

“Vanessa, please. I know I've made mistakes. But everything I did was to protect our future.””

She looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not embarrassment.

Disbelief.

“You protected the business,” she said.

“You protected the contract. You protected yourself.””

She took a breath.

“But you never once asked whether I wanted to be part of it.””

Richard's face crumpled.

“I'm sorry.””

She looked away.

The apology had arrived too late to repair anything.

Stallone rose from his chair.

“Mr. Reed, the board's decision stands. The agreement will remain suspended pending an independent review. Your company will have an opportunity to provide records and respond to the findings.””

Richard nodded numbly.

“And the hotel?””

“The hotel will cooperate with the review. We will not conceal relevant information, and we will not prejudge the final conclusions.””

Margaret gathered the documents.

“I'll coordinate with the independent reviewers and your legal counsel.””

Eleanor turned toward Vanessa.

“Mrs. Reed, if your signature was used without authorization, you should obtain independent legal advice about protecting your interests. You should also preserve every document and message you receive.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I will.””

Richard looked at her.

“Are you really going to hire a lawyer against me?””

She stared at him.

“I don't know what I'm going to do about our marriage.””

He swallowed.

“But I do know I need someone who represents me, not you.””

The words seemed to hollow him out.

For several seconds, he sat without moving.

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and frowned.

Another message from Martin.

This time, it contained no explanation.

Only a photograph.

The image showed a woman standing outside the office building where Westbridge Advisory was registered.

Her face was clear.

Richard recognized her instantly.

He stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

Vanessa looked at the screen.

Then her eyes widened.

It was the same woman whose hand had appeared beside the black handbag in the recording.

But Vanessa recognized her for a different reason.

She had met her before.

At a charity gala.

At Richard's birthday dinner.

And three months earlier, standing beside Richard in the lobby of another hotel, while he introduced her as a business associate.

Vanessa slowly raised her eyes toward her husband.

“Why is your business associate in a recording about my signature?””

Richard stared at the photograph.

His lips moved, but no words came.

Then Vanessa remembered the woman's name.

*Claudia Bennett.*

And suddenly, the night of March 14 no longer looked like a secret business meeting.

It looked like the beginning of a betrayal that had been carefully arranged long before Vanessa ever walked into Stallone's hotel.
