Chapter 3: The Contract in the Locked Briefcase

Richard Reed had given his wife three instructions before she left their penthouse that evening.

Wear the fuchsia dress.

Be charming to the hotel's management.

And, under no circumstances, discuss the contract.

Vanessa had obeyed the first instruction.

She had failed spectacularly at the second.

And now the third was the only thing keeping her from panicking in front of a lobby full of witnesses.

She forced a smile toward Daniel.

“I don't know what you're implying.””

Daniel closed his notepad.

“I haven't implied anything, Mrs. Reed.””

“You said my husband had negotiations with the hotel.””

“He does.””

“Then that's a private business matter.””

“Correct.””

“Which means it has absolutely nothing to do with this ridiculous incident.””

Stallone stood beside the reception desk, his hands resting loosely at his sides. His wet shirt clung slightly to one shoulder, but his expression remained composed.

“Maybe it doesn't,” he said.

“Let's find out.””

Vanessa's stomach tightened.

She had expected anger. She had expected threats. She had even prepared herself to apologize if necessary.

What she hadn't expected was a man who seemed perfectly willing to let the facts speak for themselves.

Daniel turned toward Stallone.

“Would you prefer to discuss the matter privately, sir?””

“No,” Stallone answered.

“If this affects the hotel, I'd rather understand it before we proceed.””

A guest near the entrance quietly slipped his phone into his pocket.

Another whispered, “This is getting serious.””

Vanessa spun toward them.

“Would everyone please stop staring?””

Nobody moved.

Her voice softened abruptly.

“Look, I apologize if anyone was offended. It was an accident. The champagne, the vase, all of it. These things happen.””

Stallone glanced at the broken ceramic pieces.

“Accidents happen,” he agreed.

“What happens afterward is a choice.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Daniel looked down briefly, hiding a flicker of approval.

Emily returned to the reception desk, where she began documenting the incident in the hotel's internal system. Her hands were steadier now.

Vanessa noticed.

“Emily, don't you dare put anything in that computer.””

Emily stopped typing.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mrs. Reed, you do not supervise our employees.””

“I am a guest!””

“And we will treat you with courtesy,” Daniel replied.

“That does not give you permission to interfere with an internal report.””

Vanessa looked at Stallone.

“You're allowing this?””

He answered without hesitation.

“Yes.””

The single word landed harder than a speech.

Vanessa's phone vibrated inside her evening bag.

She pulled it out, grateful for the distraction.

Richard's name appeared on the screen.

She answered immediately.

“Richard, thank God. You need to come downstairs.””

His voice sounded impatient.

“Why? I'm in the private lounge with the investors.””

“There's been a situation.””

“What kind of situation?””

Vanessa glanced at Stallone.

“I had a disagreement with someone in the lobby.””

“A disagreement?””

“It was nothing.””

“Then why are you calling me?””

She lowered her voice.

“Because the hotel manager is making a scene, and your contract is somehow being dragged into it.””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke very carefully.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“Nothing that matters.””

“Vanessa.””

“I poured a little champagne on a man who was being difficult. Then he turned out to be—”

She stopped.

Richard's voice became sharp.

“Who?””

“Sylvester Stallone.””

The silence on the other end lasted so long that she checked whether the call had disconnected.

Then Richard said, “Don't move.””

He hung up.

Vanessa lowered the phone.

For one brief moment, she felt relieved. Richard would handle it. He always handled things. He had lawyers, connections, and the kind of confidence that came from believing every problem had a price.

She looked at Stallone.

“My husband is coming down. I'm sure we can settle this like adults.””

“I'm sure we can,” Stallone replied.

His calmness unsettled her more than an insult would have.

Within minutes, the elevator doors opened.

Richard Reed emerged wearing a midnight-blue suit, a white pocket square, and an expression that suggested he had already decided who was to blame.

He walked quickly toward Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She moved to his side.

“This man—”

Richard looked up.

He stopped.

The color drained from his face.

For a moment, the only sound was the faint music drifting from the lounge above them.

Then Richard straightened his jacket and extended his hand.

“Mr. Stallone.””

Stallone didn't take it immediately.

“Richard Reed,” he said.

“Yes, sir.””

“Your wife tells me you have business with this hotel.””

Richard's hand remained suspended between them.

“We do. We have a proposed development agreement that I was hoping to finalize tonight.””

“Proposed,” Stallone repeated.

Richard slowly lowered his hand.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked between them.

“Richard, tell him. Tell him we've invested a fortune in this relationship.””

Richard didn't look at her.

“Vanessa, please be quiet.””

Her mouth fell open.

He had never spoken to her that way in public.

Not once.

She stepped closer to him.

“I'm trying to help you.””

“Then stop talking.””

Richard turned back toward Stallone.

“I sincerely apologize for what happened. My wife was unaware of your identity, and I'm certain she never intended to cause serious offense.””

Stallone's gaze remained steady.

“Would you like to explain why you believe my identity changes the seriousness of what happened?””

Richard swallowed.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

Richard glanced at Daniel, silently pleading for help.

The manager offered none.

Instead, he spoke in a measured voice.

“Mr. Reed, before you arrived, Mrs. Reed threatened to have Miss Carter dismissed for assisting Mr.

Stallone. She also attempted to prevent the hotel from documenting the incident.””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.

“You're taking their side?””

“Vanessa, not now.””

“They're making me sound like a criminal!””

“No one has called you a criminal.””

“Then why are you treating me like one?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Because I am trying to save a business agreement that you appear determined to destroy.””

The words silenced her.

Stallone turned to Daniel.

“What's the agreement?””

Daniel took a breath.

“The Reed Development Group submitted a proposal to renovate the adjoining property and connect it to the hotel through a private conference and event complex. The board was scheduled to review the final terms this evening.””

“And is the agreement signed?””

“No, sir.””

Richard stepped forward.

“We've spent eighteen months preparing this project. We have architectural plans, financing commitments, and several major clients waiting for confirmation. If the agreement falls through, it will cost us a great deal.””

Stallone looked at him.

“Then I suggest you let the board evaluate your proposal on its merits.””

“Of course.””

“Not on your wife's social connections.””

Richard nodded quickly.

“Absolutely.””

“Not on promises of exclusive access.””

“Certainly.””

“And not because anyone believes this hotel owes them special treatment.””

Richard's shoulders stiffened.

“No one believes that, Mr. Stallone.””

Vanessa made a small, incredulous sound.

“You told me the hotel practically depended on us!””

Richard turned toward her so sharply that she fell silent.

“I told you the project was important. I never told you to behave like you owned the building.””

“You said everyone would do whatever we needed.””

“I said the staff would accommodate our business meetings. That's not the same thing.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.

She looked around the lobby, searching for someone who might understand her humiliation. Instead, she found the receptionist watching quietly, the manager standing straight-backed, and the guests who had witnessed the champagne spill.

Stallone picked up the conversation as though the argument between the Reeds had been an unfortunate interruption.

“Daniel, I want the incident report completed. Include the statements from anyone who witnessed what happened.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And have the damage assessed.””

“Certainly.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll personally cover the vase and the cleaning costs.””

Stallone looked at him for a moment.

“That would be appropriate.””

Vanessa seized on the word.

“There. It's settled. Richard will pay for everything, and we can all move on.””

“No,” Stallone said.

Her smile disappeared.

“The damage can be paid for. That doesn't mean the behavior disappears.””

He turned toward Emily.

“Miss Carter, has anyone reviewed your work since the beginning of the year?””

She looked surprised.

“Not formally, sir.””

“Why not?””

Emily glanced at Daniel.

The manager's face tightened.

“We've had staffing pressures, sir. Reviews were delayed.””

Stallone nodded slowly.

“Then let's address that.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does her performance review have to do with any of this?””

“Nothing,” Stallone answered.

“That's precisely the point. She should be evaluated on her work, not on whether someone powerful likes her.””

Emily's eyes shone.

She looked down before anyone could notice.

Richard watched the exchange with a troubled expression. He had expected a wealthy owner to protect his reputation, silence the guests, and resolve the matter behind closed doors.

Instead, Stallone was asking questions that made everyone reconsider how the hotel operated.

And Richard knew that was dangerous.

Because the proposed development agreement included a provision requiring the hotel group to maintain strict standards for employee treatment and public conduct. It had been inserted after a previous partner faced a damaging workplace scandal.

Richard had agreed to it without much thought.

Now he wondered whether the clause might become relevant in a way he had never anticipated.

“Mr. Stallone,” he said cautiously, “perhaps we should take this conversation upstairs. There are details in the proposal that shouldn't be discussed in front of guests.””

Stallone studied him.

“Are you worried about the guests hearing the details?””

“I'm concerned about confidentiality.””

“Fair enough.””

Richard exhaled.

“Thank you.””

“But first, I have one question.””

Richard's relief vanished.

“What is it?””

Stallone glanced at Vanessa.

“Did your wife know why you wanted her at tonight's reception?””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She stared back at him, suddenly terrified that he might answer honestly.

“Richard,” she whispered.

He said nothing.

Stallone continued.

“Because she mentioned your business relationships as though they gave her authority over the people who work here. I would like to understand whether that belief came from her alone.””

Richard's face tightened.

“Mr. Stallone, I assure you—”

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

A message had arrived from his company's legal director.

Richard opened it, read the first line, and went completely still.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

“What is it?””

He didn't answer.

She reached for his wrist.

“Richard, tell me what it says.””

He slowly raised his eyes toward Stallone.

“Sir,” he said, his voice suddenly strained, “there's been a development with the contract.””

Stallone waited.

Richard turned the phone around.

On the screen was a message that changed the entire evening:

*THE BOARD HAS REQUESTED AN IMMEDIATE REVIEW OF THE REED GROUP'S CONDUCT AND ALL UNDISCLOSED RELATIONSHIPS CONNECTED TO TONIGHT'S EVENT. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL WE SPEAK.*

Vanessa stared at the words.

Then she looked at her husband.

“What undisclosed relationships?””

Richard's face had gone gray.

He locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket.

“Not here,” he whispered.

But Stallone had already noticed the change in his expression.

And when Richard looked toward the private elevator, Stallone followed his gaze.

“Daniel,” he said quietly, “before anyone goes upstairs, I want to see the original proposal.””

The manager nodded.

“Of course, sir.””

Richard took a sudden step forward.

“There's no need for that tonight.””

Stallone turned toward him.

“Why not?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, the man who had arrived believing he could repair the damage with an apology looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Because the contract was not the only document waiting in the hotel's private offices.

And if Stallone asked to see the original file, he might discover that the champagne incident was the smallest problem the Reed family had brought through the hotel's doors that evening.
