Chapter 9: The Woman in the Recording

“Claudia Bennett?””

Vanessa spoke the name as if saying it aloud might make the photograph disappear.

It didn't.

The woman in the image stood outside a glass-fronted office building, wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a black handbag. Her dark hair fell neatly over one shoulder. She was smiling at someone outside the frame.

Vanessa recognized the smile.

She had seen it across dinner tables, at charity events, and during the polite conversations that followed Richard's business meetings.

Claudia had always been gracious.

She remembered birthdays. She complimented Vanessa's jewelry. She asked thoughtful questions about their home and their travels.

Once, she had even helped Vanessa choose a dress for an awards dinner.

At the time, Vanessa had considered her a friend.

Now she wondered whether Claudia had been watching her for months, waiting for the right moment to use what she knew.

Richard took the phone from Vanessa's line of sight without touching it.

“Where did you get that photograph?””

She pulled the device back.

“Martin sent it to you.””

“Let me see the full message.””

“No.””

“Vanessa, I need to know what he said.””

“You can read it yourself if you explain why Claudia was at that meeting.””

Richard looked toward Stallone.

“This is becoming a personal matter.””

Stallone's expression remained composed.

“It became personal when your wife discovered her name on a company registration she says she never authorized.””

Richard turned away.

Vanessa held up the photograph.

“Who is she?””

“Claudia Bennett. You know that.””

“I know who she is socially. I don't know what she was doing in Martin's office at midnight while you discussed my signature.””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Claudia was advising us on the financing.””

“Then why did you introduce her to me as someone who handled investor relations?””

“Because she did.””

“Was she also involved with Westbridge?””

Richard didn't answer.

Vanessa felt her stomach tighten.

“Richard.””

“Yes,” he said at last.

“She helped establish the consulting structure.””

“Did she know my name was being used?””

“I don't know.””

“You've said that about everyone tonight.””

“Because I wasn't the person preparing the documents!””

“But you were the person sitting in the room.””

Richard's shoulders slumped.

For a moment, he looked older than he had when he entered the lobby.

“I know how this looks.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Do you?””

He met her eyes.

“I know I've made decisions without explaining them to you. I know I should have told you about the structure before asking you to sign anything. But I never intended for your identity to be used improperly.””

She swallowed.

“Then why did you agree to let Martin file the company under my name before I signed?””

Richard's silence answered her again.

Eleanor Price closed her folder.

“We need to distinguish what we know from what we suspect. Claudia's presence in the recording is relevant, but it doesn't establish that she participated in any unauthorized filing.””

Margaret nodded.

“Agreed. We should preserve the photograph and obtain a verified copy of the original recording. We also need the communications between Martin, Claudia, and the Reed Development Group concerning the account structure.””

Stallone turned toward Richard.

“Will your company provide those records?””

Richard hesitated.

“My lawyers will need to review the request.””

“That's reasonable,” Stallone replied.

“But the records must be preserved.””

Richard nodded reluctantly.

“I'll issue the instruction.””

He pulled out his phone and began typing.

Vanessa watched his fingers move.

For years, Richard had been the person who handled the difficult conversations. He made the calls, reviewed the contracts, and assured her that every decision had been made for a good reason.

She had trusted him because he always sounded certain.

Now she realized that certainty could be a performance.

And she had been the audience.

When Richard finished the message, he placed the phone on the table.

“I've instructed the company's legal department to preserve all records relating to Westbridge, Northstar, and the development proposal.””

Margaret nodded.

“Please send a copy of that instruction to counsel and the independent reviewer.””

“I will.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

She wanted to ask about Claudia's relationship with Richard, but she was afraid of the answer. She could endure the financial questions. She could endure the possibility that her signature had been used without permission.

What frightened her most was the thought that the people closest to her had been discussing her as though she were a resource to be managed.

She looked at the photograph again.

“Did Claudia ever come to our house?””

Richard's expression changed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Several times. For meetings.””

“Meetings with whom?””

“Me. Martin. Occasionally other advisers.””

“And I was there.””

“Sometimes.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“Did you ever discuss Westbridge in front of me?””

“I don't remember.””

“Did Claudia?””

Richard looked away.

Vanessa's voice grew quieter.

“Did she ever ask me to sign anything?””

“No.””

“Did she ever handle documents you gave me?””

Richard hesitated.

That was enough.

Vanessa felt a cold knot form beneath her ribs.

“What did she handle?””

“Some of the financing paperwork.””

“Richard.””

“She helped organize the files.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She remembered Claudia sitting at the kitchen island one afternoon, sorting papers into neat stacks while Richard spoke on the phone. Claudia had smiled and explained that she was helping make the documents easier to review.

Vanessa had thanked her.

She had even offered to make coffee.

At the time, it had seemed like an ordinary act of friendship.

Now she wondered whether Claudia had been preparing the papers that carried her name.

Richard moved toward her.

“Vanessa, listen to me. I know this looks terrible, but I never wanted you to be hurt.””

She looked up.

“Stop telling me what you wanted.””

He froze.

“Tell me what you did.””

He stood beside her chair, unable to answer.

The conference room door opened.

Daniel entered quietly.

“Mr. Stallone, there's someone downstairs asking to speak with you.””

Stallone looked toward him.

“Who?””

“Ms. Claudia Bennett.””

Richard turned so quickly that his chair struck the table.

“What?””

Daniel remained composed.

“She arrived at the main entrance about five minutes ago. She says she has information concerning the development agreement and the documents under review.””

Vanessa stood.

“She's here?””

“Yes, ma'am.””

Richard moved toward the door.

“No. Tell her to leave.””

Stallone raised his hand.

“Why?””

Richard stopped.

“Because she's involved in this. We shouldn't let her come in here and make statements without counsel.””

Margaret nodded thoughtfully.

“That's a fair concern. If Ms. Bennett wishes to provide information, we can arrange a formal interview through the appropriate process.””

Claudia's voice came from the hallway.

“I don't need an interview to tell the truth.””

Everyone turned.

She stood just outside the open door, her cream-colored coat draped over one arm. Her expression was composed, but her fingers were tightly wrapped around the handle of a leather bag.

Richard stared at her.

“You shouldn't be here.””

Claudia looked at him.

“You've been ignoring my calls.””

“Because I told you not to contact me.””

“You told me to stay quiet.””

“Claudia.””

She looked past him toward Vanessa.

“I'm sorry.””

Vanessa felt an unexpected surge of anger.

“You're sorry?””

Claudia swallowed.

“I know how this looks.””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

“You know how it looks because you've seen the documents. I want to know what happened.””

Claudia's eyes moved toward Stallone.

“Mr. Stallone, may I speak?””

He gestured toward the empty chair.

“You may. But anything relevant to the review needs to be documented, and you should understand that we will verify your statements against the records.””

Claudia nodded.

“I understand.””

She sat down, placed her handbag on the floor, and folded her hands.

Richard remained standing.

Margaret opened her notebook.

“Ms. Bennett, please state your role in the Westbridge and Northstar arrangements.””

Claudia took a breath.

“I was hired as a financial adviser to help structure the financing for the Reed Development Group's proposed project.””

“Who hired you?””

“Richard did, through his company.””

Richard immediately interrupted.

“That's not entirely accurate.””

Claudia looked at him.

“You signed the engagement letter.””

“I signed an agreement for consulting services.””

“Which you asked me to provide.””

Margaret raised a hand.

“One at a time, please.””

Claudia nodded.

“I helped establish Westbridge Advisory as a consulting entity. Martin Cole handled the corporate filings and banking arrangements. Northstar was introduced as a payment intermediary for certain financing transactions.””

Eleanor leaned forward.

“Why was Vanessa Reed listed as a beneficial owner?””

Claudia's expression faltered.

“Richard said she had agreed to participate in the arrangement.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“Did you ever ask me?””

Claudia lowered her eyes.

“No.””

“Did you ever speak to me about Westbridge?””

“No.””

“Then why did you believe I had agreed?””

Claudia looked at Richard.

“He told me the paperwork had been explained to you.””

Vanessa let out a small, incredulous laugh.

“He told you that?””

“Yes.””

“And you never checked?””

Claudia's voice became quieter.

“I should have.””

“That's not an answer.””

Claudia looked at her directly.

“No. I never checked.””

Vanessa felt her hands begin to shake.

“Did you see my signature before the company was registered?””

Claudia hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Was it on the original filing?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know I hadn't signed it yet?””

Claudia closed her eyes briefly.

“I knew the registration had been submitted before the final authorization was completed.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You said the registration could be amended later.””

Claudia turned toward him.

“Because you told me Vanessa would sign the documents.””

“I believed she would.””

“You said she had already agreed.””

“I said she would agree once she understood the structure.””

Vanessa looked between them.

The distinction was chilling.

Richard hadn't merely assumed she would consent.

He had told other people to proceed as though her consent were inevitable.

Margaret wrote something in her notebook.

“Ms. Bennett, are you saying that the filing was submitted before Vanessa Reed authorized it?””

“Yes.””

“Who made that decision?””

Claudia glanced at Richard.

“Martin handled the filing. Richard approved the arrangement.””

Richard slammed his palm against the table.

“That's a lie!””

Claudia flinched but didn't look away.

“You approved the arrangement. You said the financing wouldn't proceed without it.””

“I approved a consulting structure, not the use of an unauthorized signature!””

“You knew the registration was already filed.””

“I did not tell Martin to forge anything.””

Margaret intervened immediately.

“Let's be precise. We have not established who created or submitted the signature. We need the original filing records and expert analysis before reaching that conclusion.””

Claudia nodded.

“I understand.””

Vanessa stared at Richard.

“You knew the registration had been filed under my name before I signed anything. You told me the documents were routine. And now you're saying you never told anyone to use my signature.””

Richard looked at her desperately.

“Those things are not the same.””

“They are all connected to the same decision.””

He shook his head.

“I was trying to save the project.””

“And I was supposed to be the cost?””

His expression crumpled.

“No.””

“Then what was I?””

He couldn't answer.

Claudia reached into her handbag.

“I brought something.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She removed a small envelope and placed it on the table.

“It's a copy of an email exchange between Richard and Martin. I kept it because I was worried the filing would become a problem.””

Richard stared at the envelope.

“You told me you deleted those emails.””

Claudia's face hardened.

“I told you I would remove them from the shared project folder. I never said I destroyed my own records.””

Margaret didn't touch the envelope immediately.

“Where did this copy come from?””

“My personal archive. I printed it before the shared folder was changed.””

“Has it been altered?””

“Not to my knowledge. I can provide the original electronic messages to the independent reviewer.””

Margaret opened the envelope and examined the first page.

Her expression changed as she read.

Eleanor leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Margaret turned the page toward her.

The email was dated March 13, the night before the registration was filed.

Richard's message was brief.

Proceed with the structure as discussed. Vanessa will sign the supporting documents tomorrow. We cannot miss the transfer window.

Martin had replied:

The filing will list her as a beneficial owner before the authorization is received. That creates a documentation risk.

Richard's answer followed.

I accept the risk. Complete the registration and keep the project moving.

Vanessa felt as though the room had fallen silent inside her head.

Richard stared at the page.

“I need to explain the context.””

Stallone looked at him.

“Then explain it.””

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Claudia looked down at her hands.

“I should have stopped it,” she said quietly.

“I knew the filing was premature. I told myself the authorization would arrive the next day and everything would be corrected.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Claudia's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Martin contacted me this afternoon. He said the board was about to approve the agreement and that the payment would be released tonight. He wanted me to confirm that the disclosures were complete.””

“And?””

“I couldn't.””

Claudia took a shaky breath.

“I told him the registration hadn't been properly authorized. He said it didn't matter because the supporting documents would be signed before anyone questioned it.””

Vanessa's voice was barely audible.

“So you knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you waited until tonight.””

Claudia lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked away.

For a moment, she felt a terrible urge to laugh. Not because anything was funny, but because every person who had participated in the arrangement seemed to have found a reason to postpone the truth.

Richard had waited because he wanted the project approved.

Claudia had waited because she feared the consequences.

Martin had apparently waited because the money had not yet moved.

And Vanessa had been the last person to discover that her name had been placed at the center of it all.

Stallone closed the folder.

“Thank you for providing the email, Ms. Bennett. The independent reviewer will need the original messages and any related records. We will also need to establish the destination of the Northstar transfers.””

Claudia nodded.

“I'll cooperate.””

Richard looked at her with open hostility.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

Claudia met his gaze.

“I know exactly what I should have done months ago.””

He stepped toward her.

“You're destroying everything.””

“No,” she replied.

“I'm finally refusing to help you hide it.””

Eleanor rose.

“The development agreement remains suspended. The board will review the evidence and determine the next steps after receiving the independent findings.””

Richard looked at her.

“You can't simply walk away from the project.””

“We aren't walking away. We're refusing to approve an agreement whose disclosures may be inaccurate.””

He turned toward Stallone.

“After everything I've invested, you're going to let this happen?””

Stallone's voice remained even.

“Your investment doesn't entitle you to an exception from the facts.””

Richard stood motionless.

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

She had expected to leave the room feeling victorious, perhaps even vindicated.

Instead, she felt hollow.

The documents had begun to explain what happened, but they had also revealed how many people had known more than she did.

As she moved toward the door, Claudia spoke softly.

“Vanessa, there's something else you need to know.””

Vanessa stopped.

“What?””

Claudia looked at Richard.

Then she turned back.

“The transfer wasn't the only reason your name was used.””

Richard's face changed.

“Claudia, don't.””

She ignored him.

“Northstar was set up to receive the development money, but another account was prepared in your name. Martin said it would be used to route a separate payment after the agreement was signed.””

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her bag.

“What payment?””

Claudia shook her head.

“I don't know the final amount. I only saw the instructions.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Where are those instructions?””

“In an email Martin sent me. I can provide it.””

“Does the email identify the recipient account?””

Claudia nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Whose account is it?””

Claudia looked at Vanessa.

Then she spoke the words that made Richard grab the edge of the table.

“The account was opened under your name, Vanessa. But the destination instructions identify someone else as the person authorized to withdraw the money.””

Vanessa felt the room spin.

“Who?””

Claudia opened her mouth.

Richard interrupted.

“Don't.””

Claudia looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“It's too late, Richard.””

She turned toward Vanessa.

“The person named on the withdrawal authorization is—”

Her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

For a moment, she looked as frightened as Richard had looked when the recording first appeared.

Then she slowly placed the phone on the table.

A new message had arrived.

It contained a single sentence.

*You were warned to stay quiet. Now all of you will learn what really happened on March 14.*

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Stallone looked toward Margaret.

Eleanor reached for her phone.

And Richard, who had spent the entire evening trying to keep the truth contained, finally whispered the words that changed the meaning of everything they had uncovered.

“Martin isn't the person we should be afraid of.””

He looked directly at Vanessa.

May you like

“Because he didn't create this arrangement alone.””

And somewhere beyond the hotel windows, the person who had been controlling the arrangement from the beginning was preparing to step into the light.
