Chapter 10: The Secret She Buried

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

My father stared at my stepmother like he was looking at a stranger.

“You were the reason he disappeared?””

My stepmother didn’t answer.

She looked older suddenly.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect mask she had worn for years was cracking.

“Answer me.””

My father’s voice shook.

She slowly sat down.

“I never wanted things to become like this.””

My father laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You stole my daughter’s childhood.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“You made me believe my father didn’t care about me.””

Her eyes moved away.

“You were always going to choose him.””

That sentence confused me.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“From the moment I married your father, I knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I would never be enough.””

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“Your father loved you before he even knew he had you.””

My father’s expression changed.

She looked at him.

“You talked about Lily constantly. Every conversation was about her.””

“That’s because she was my daughter.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became bitter.

“And I was just the woman standing between you.””

I stared at her.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

She looked at me.

“No.””

She took a deep breath.

“It doesn’t.””

For the first time, she admitted it.

Not because she felt sorry.

Because she was finally trapped.

My father placed his hands on the table.

“What happened to Lily’s biological father?””

My stepmother looked down.

“His name was Daniel.””

My aunt closed her eyes.

She knew.

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

My aunt nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

The older woman took a deep breath.

“Daniel was a good man.””

My father looked at me.

“He loved Lily’s mother.””

I listened quietly.

The story felt like it belonged to another lifetime.

Before my father.

Before my stepmother.

Before all the pain.

“Then why did Lily’s mother marry me?”” my father asked.

My aunt looked at him.

“Because Daniel disappeared.””

My father frowned.

“Disappeared?””

She nodded.

“He left suddenly.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then my stepmother spoke.

“Because I made him leave.””

The words felt heavier than anything before.

My father stood up.

“What did you do?””

She looked terrified.

“I told him Lily wasn’t his.””

I froze.

My father’s face changed.

“You lied?””

She nodded.

“I told him your wife had chosen someone else.””

My aunt whispered:

“You destroyed two families.””

My stepmother looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” my aunt said.

“We understand perfectly.””

My stepmother’s eyes filled with tears.

But I couldn’t tell if they were real.

“I was young.””

My father stared at her.

“You were old enough to know you were hurting people.””

She looked at me.

“I thought if Daniel left, I could become important.””

The room became colder.

“I thought your father would eventually love me the same way.””

My father shook his head.

“You tried to replace a person who was never yours to replace.””

She closed her eyes.

The truth was finally out.

But I still had questions.

“What happened after?””

Everyone looked at me.

I swallowed.

“What happened to Daniel?””

My aunt answered.

“He left town.””

“Did he know about me?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“Not everything.””

“What does that mean?””

My aunt reached into the folder.

She pulled out another envelope.

“He found out years later.””

My heart stopped.

“Years later?””

She nodded.

“He tried to come back.””

My father looked shocked.

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

The same time everything changed.

The same time my stepmother started controlling my life.

My aunt handed me the envelope.

“This was sent to your stepmother.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first sentence made my hands shake.

I know Lily is my daughter.

I looked at my father.

“He knew?””

My aunt nodded.

“He wanted to meet her.””

I kept reading.

I don’t want anything from you. I only want to see my child once.

My eyes filled with tears.

A man I had never known had wanted to find me.

And someone had stopped him.

My father looked at my stepmother.

“You hid this.””

She said nothing.

“Where is he now?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“I don’t know.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You don’t know?””

She whispered:

“He left again.””

My aunt shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at my stepmother.

“You know exactly what happened.””

My stepmother became pale.

My father stepped forward.

“What are you hiding?””

She looked terrified.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

The name on it was visible.

And my father saw it.

His expression changed.

May you like

Because the person calling was someone he thought had been gone forever.

Daniel.
