Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew

I read the sentence again.

And again.

But the words didn’t change.

I cannot let her discover who her real father is.

My hands went numb.

“What does this mean?””

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

“You found this email.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Dad?””

He looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

I understood that feeling.

Fear had controlled our entire family.

My stepmother had built everything on fear.

Fear of losing money.

Fear of being abandoned.

Fear of the truth.

I walked into my father’s room.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the DNA test.

He looked exhausted.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He read the email.

The moment he finished, he became completely still.

Then he whispered:

“She knew.””

I sat beside him.

“Dad…”

“She knew something.””

His voice was shaking.

“But what?””

The next morning, we went to the testing center.

The waiting room was cold.

Too cold.

My father sat beside me.

He held my hand the entire time.

The woman at the front desk looked at the paperwork.

“You requested a new verification test?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

She glanced at me.

“And you are?””

He answered immediately.

“My daughter.””

The woman smiled politely.

But I knew.

Everyone wanted proof.

Everyone wanted paperwork.

A piece of paper that could decide whether a person belonged to another.

After the samples were taken, we left.

The results would take several days.

Several days of waiting.

Several days of wondering.

But before we reached the car, someone called my father.

He stopped walking.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then he looked at me.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Stay there. We’re coming.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?””

“It was your aunt.””

My heart jumped.

“Mom’s sister?””

He nodded.

“She wants to meet us.””

“Why?””

My father looked worried.

“She said she knows the truth.””

An hour later, we arrived at a small café outside town.

An older woman was sitting by the window.

The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“Lily.””

I stopped.

I hadn’t heard anyone say my name with that much sadness before.

She stood and hugged me.

I froze.

Then slowly, I hugged her back.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Those were the first words she said.

Not hello.

Not how are you.

Sorry.

My father sat down.

“We need answers.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Her hands shook around her cup.

“I should have told you years ago.””

My father’s voice was calm.

“But you didn’t.””

She looked down.

“Because your wife threatened me.””

“She threatened everyone.””

The woman nodded.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of you.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Your existence.””

The café suddenly felt silent.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your mother had a secret.””

My father looked up.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Before she married you, she was in love with someone else.””

My father went still.

I felt confused.

“My mother?””

She nodded.

“Your mother loved another man before you.””

My father looked hurt.

“But Lily was born after we married.””

“Yes.””

She paused.

“That’s the problem.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

The woman reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old photograph.

She placed it on the table.

My hands moved toward it.

The picture showed my mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside a man I had never seen before.

But there was something about him.

Something familiar.

My father looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

His face changed.

Because he saw it too.

The man in the picture had my eyes.

My smile.

My face.

The woman whispered:

“That is Lily’s biological father.””

Nobody spoke.

My father looked like the world had shifted beneath him.

“Why did she hide this?””

The woman answered quietly.

“Because she was afraid you would leave Lily.””

I looked at the picture.

My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

“But why would my stepmother care?””

The woman’s expression became darker.

“Because she knew something else.””

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your biological father left behind an inheritance.””

My father frowned.

“An inheritance?””

“Yes.””

My aunt took another document from her bag.

“And Lily is the only person who can claim it.””

My heart stopped.

Suddenly, everything connected.

The money.

The school.

The lies.

My stepmother wasn’t just trying to control my father’s money.

She was trying to keep me from ever finding out about my own.

My father grabbed the document.

“When did you know?””

My aunt looked ashamed.

“Six years ago.””

The same time as the DNA test.

The same time my stepmother started changing.

My father slowly looked at me.

“She knew.””

My aunt nodded.

“She knew Lily would become powerful one day.””

The room went quiet.

Then my father said the words none of us expected.

“Then we need to find out what else she has been hiding.””

My aunt reached into her bag one more time.

“I brought everything.””

She placed a folder on the table.

But before my father opened it, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“It’s the bank.””

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face turned pale.

“What do you mean the account was emptied?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The money I sent for your education…”

His voice broke.

“It wasn’t just spent.””

He looked at the folder.

“It was transferred somewhere else.””

May you like

My aunt whispered:

“Then she already knew we were coming.””
