Chapter 11: The Truth My Father Hid

The drive home was silent.

Not uncomfortable silence.

Something worse.

The kind where everyone is afraid of the question nobody wants to ask.

I sat in the back seat staring out the window.

My father kept both hands on the steering wheel.

He didn’t look at me once.

That hurt.

Because before everything changed, my father always looked back.

Even when he was driving.

Even when he was busy.

He always checked on me.

But now…

He was avoiding me.

When we arrived home, he parked in the driveway.

Nobody moved.

Finally, I spoke.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Know what?””

“That you want answers.””

I swallowed.

“Do I deserve them?””

He turned around.

The pain on his face was immediate.

“Emma.””

“Because everyone has been hiding things from me.””

His eyes filled.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

The words came out quietly.

And somehow that made them heavier.

He looked down.

“Yes.””

That one word broke something inside me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he didn’t deny it.

We went inside.

Aunt Rachel stayed.

She knew I needed answers.

My father sat at the table.

The same table where I had once eaten alone while Victoria and Brandon laughed.

But now everything was different.

“Your mother’s last day…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“I wasn’t home.””

“I know.””

He nodded.

“I had a work trip.””

His voice became quieter.

“She called me.””

My heart tightened.

“What did she say?””

“She sounded scared.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked at his hands.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I didn’t understand.

“Of what?””

“Because she asked me to come home.””

The room became silent.

“And I didn’t.””

My father’s voice broke.

“I thought it was another argument with Victoria.””

My chest tightened.

“You thought she was exaggerating?””

He looked at me.

“No.””

A tear rolled down his face.

“I thought I had more time.””

Nobody spoke.

I had spent years wondering why my father wasn’t there.

Why he left.

Why he didn’t protect us.

And now I knew.

He wasn’t careless.

He was wrong.

But wrong still had consequences.

“What happened after that?””

He took a deep breath.

“The next morning, I got the call.””

My mother was gone.

The words didn’t need to be said.

I looked away.

My father continued.

“After she died, Victoria came to me.””

“Why?””

“She said your mother had been unstable.””

I froze.

“She said my mother was unstable?””

“Yes.””

I felt anger rising.

“And you believed her?””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was broken.””

The honesty stopped me.

“I had lost my wife.””

His voice trembled.

“And I had a six-year-old daughter who had lost her mother.””

He looked at me.

“I wanted someone to tell me what to do.””

I looked down.

“And she did.””

“Yes.””

Aunt Rachel spoke softly.

“She took advantage of your grief.””

My father nodded.

“She slowly became the person who managed everything.””

The money.

The house.

My life.

Everything.

Then he reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a small box.

“I kept this hidden.””

My heart stopped.

Inside was a necklace.

My mother’s necklace.

The one I thought was lost.

“I thought Victoria threw it away.””

Dad shook his head.

“She gave it to me after your mother died.””

I touched it carefully.

“Why?””

He looked away.

“Because she wanted me to believe your mother didn’t care about it.””

I held the necklace.

And suddenly I understood.

Victoria didn’t just steal money.

She stole memories.

She stole pieces of my mother.

My father looked at me.

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

“Your mother left another message.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

He stood and walked to his office.

When he returned, he held an old phone.

“It was damaged.””

Aunt Rachel leaned closer.

“But I recovered part of it.””

My father pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then…

A voice.

My mother’s voice.

My knees almost gave out.

“Daniel…”

Everyone became still.

The recording was weak.

Broken.

But it was her.

“If anything happens…”

A pause.

“I need you to protect Emma.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice in the background.

A voice I recognized.

Victoria.

My mother whispered:

“She’s here.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

My father stared at the phone.

Then at me.

“Emma…”

But before he could finish…

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stood there.

Behind him was Victoria.

And she was smiling.

“I told you,” she said.

“You would regret believing her.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Daniel Collins?””

My father stood.

“Yes?””

The officer looked at the papers in his hand.

“We need to discuss a complaint filed against your daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

“What complaint?””

Victoria smiled.

May you like

And answered:

“Child abuse.””
