Chapter 3: The Person She Forgot

I spent the entire night staring at that message.

I didn’t sleep.

I didn’t move.

I just watched those four words glowing on my screen.

I can prove everything.

The person who sent it was someone I never expected.

My mother’s older sister.

My Aunt Rachel.

Victoria always told me Aunt Rachel hated our family.

She said Rachel was jealous.

She said Rachel was dangerous.

She said:

“Some people only come back when they want something.””

But now Aunt Rachel was the only person telling me the truth.

The next morning, I secretly called her.

She answered after one ring.

“Emma?””

The sound of my name almost made me cry.

Nobody had said it like that in a long time.

Like I mattered.

“Are you okay?”” she asked.

I looked around my room.

At the cracked wall.

At the empty desk.

At the old picture of my mother hidden beside my pillow.

“No,” I whispered.

There was silence.

Then her voice became softer.

“What has she done?””

I swallowed.

“Everything.””

I told her.

Not every detail.

I was too embarrassed.

But enough.

The bathroom.

The food.

The money.

The way Victoria made me feel like a stranger in my own home.

When I finished, Aunt Rachel was quiet.

Then she said:

“Emma, your father needs to know.””

“I tried.””

“Did you tell him everything?””

I looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

Because I was scared.

Because I had spent months believing my voice didn’t matter.

Because every time I tried to speak, Victoria reminded me who had control.

“I don’t know if he’ll believe me.””

Aunt Rachel sighed.

“Your father loves you.””

“But he loves her too.””

“That’s why we need proof.””

Proof.

That word stayed with me.

Because I knew Aunt Rachel was right.

That afternoon, I started looking.

Not searching wildly.

Carefully.

Victoria had become careless because she believed nobody would challenge her.

I checked the filing cabinet in her bedroom when she was outside.

Inside were documents.

Receipts.

Bank records.

And then I found something that made my hands shake.

A second bank account.

The account holder was Victoria.

But the deposits came from my father.

Every month.

Money transferred directly.

Money that was supposed to pay for our life.

I took pictures of everything.

Every receipt.

Every statement.

Every purchase.

Then I found something worse.

A folder with my name on it.

I opened it.

Inside were school documents.

Medical records.

Letters from my father.

And one paper that made me stop breathing.

A legal document.

My eyes scanned the page.

Victoria had been preparing to become my official guardian.

Not because she loved me.

Because she wanted control.

I heard the bedroom door open.

I froze.

Victoria stood there.

Her face changed when she saw the folder in my hands.

For the first time…

She looked afraid.

“What are you doing?””

I slowly put the papers down.

“You were planning this.””

She stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharp.

“Emma.””

I had never seen her so angry.

“You have no idea what you’re playing with.””

“I know exactly what I found.””

She stared at me.

Then she smiled.

A terrifyingly calm smile.

“You think your father will choose you over me?””

My heart pounded.

“He’s my dad.””

“He’s my husband.””

“He’s my father.””

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Victoria walked closer and lowered her voice.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

I held my phone behind my back.

Recording.

“I’m done being quiet.””

Her expression changed.

“What did you say?””

“I said I’m done.””

She reached for my phone.

I stepped away.

And then her own phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

I had never seen Victoria look scared before.

Not once.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A long silence.

Then her hand slowly dropped.

“What?””

I watched her eyes widen.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My heart started racing.

Someone on the other end said something.

Victoria looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“Your father knows.””

The room went completely silent.

Because somewhere far away…

My father had finally seen the empty accounts.

The missing money.

The lies.

May you like

And for the first time in years…

Victoria was the one who was afraid.
