Chapter 4: The Truth Behind The Favor
I spent the next morning putting everything together.
Bank records.
Emails.
Old payments.
Every time I had helped my family.
Every time they told me it was temporary.
The pattern was impossible to ignore.
They weren't having a hard time.
They had built their lives around my kindness.
I met my father at a coffee shop.
He looked older than he had the night before.
"Dani.""
I placed the documents on the table.
"Tell me the truth.""
He looked at them.
"I made mistakes.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You made choices.""
He looked away.
For the first time in my life, my father looked small.
"We lost money.""
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
"How much?""
"Almost everything.""
I nodded slowly.
"And Kevin's wedding?""
"He needed a fresh start.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
"You thought a wedding would fix financial problems?""
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"We were desperate.""
I leaned back.
"You keep using that word.""
"What?""
"Desperate.""
I looked at him.
"Desperate people ask for help. They don't forge trust.""
His face tightened.
"We never forged anything.""
I pushed the documents forward.
"Then explain this.""
He didn't.
Because he couldn't.
When I got back to my hotel, Kevin was waiting outside.
I almost walked past him.
"Dani.""
I stopped.
"What?""
He looked exhausted.
"I need to tell you something.""
I said nothing.
"The mortgage wasn't my idea.""
I stared at him.
"Then whose was it?""
Kevin looked toward the ground.
"Dad's.""
My chest tightened.
"Why?""
Kevin swallowed.
"Because he knew you would never let us lose the house.""
I felt the anger rise.
"But you agreed.""
"I was scared.""
"You agreed.""
He nodded.
"I did.""
For once, Kevin wasn't defending himself.
He was admitting it.
That hurt more.
"I really thought you would understand.""
I looked at him.
"No, Kevin.""
My voice was quiet.
"I understand perfectly.""
He wiped his eyes.
"I ruined everything.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You revealed it.""
He looked confused.
"What?""
I stepped closer.
"The person who ruined this family wasn't the person who found the truth.""
I turned away.
Then my phone rang.
It was Rachel from the bank.
I answered.
"Ms. Carter, we found something else.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
There was a pause.
"We reviewed the original application.""
"And?""
Her voice became careful.
"Your brother was not the only person who used your information.""
I stopped walking.
"What are you saying?""
May you like
Rachel whispered:
"Your mother signed the documents too.""
