Chapter 8: The Family Secret They Buried
I spent the entire night staring at one question.
Who was my biological grandfather?
My father had always told me his parents died before I was born.
There were no stories.
No photographs.
No family history.
Just silence.
And I had accepted it.
Because children believe what their parents tell them.
Even when those parents are hiding something.
The next morning, Kevin sent me an address.
No explanation.
Just a location.
I drove two hours outside the city.
The house was small.
Old.
Surrounded by trees.
An elderly man opened the door.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then his expression changed.
"Danielle.""
My breath caught.
"You know who I am?""
He smiled sadly.
"I have been waiting a long time.""
I almost turned around.
But I stepped inside.
The man introduced himself.
"Thomas Carter.""
My father's father.
My biological grandfather.
The person I was never supposed to find.
"I don't understand.""
Thomas sat down.
"Your father told you I was dead.""
I nodded.
"He lied.""
The bluntness shocked me.
"Why?""
Thomas looked at the floor.
"Because I knew what he did.""
My chest tightened.
"What did he do?""
Thomas reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a folder.
Not again.
Another folder.
Another secret.
He handed it to me.
"Your father came to me when he was drowning in debt.""
I opened it.
"He asked for help.""
"And you refused?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I tried.""
I looked at him.
"Then what happened?""
"He stole money from my business.""
The words landed heavily.
"What?""
"He used my name.""
I stared at the papers.
"This debt...""
Thomas nodded.
"Was created by your father.""
My hands went cold.
"Then why was my name connected?""
Thomas looked at me with sadness.
"Because your father needed someone innocent.""
I closed the folder.
I couldn't breathe.
My whole life was built on a story that wasn't true.
My father wasn't the man who protected our family.
He was the reason it needed protection.
Before I left, Thomas stopped me.
"Dani.""
I turned.
"There is something you need to know.""
"What?""
He looked toward the folder.
"Your mother knew.""
I closed my eyes.
"No.""
"She knew before she married him.""
I felt something break.
"She knew everything?""
"Not everything.""
Thomas sighed.
"But enough.""
When I returned home, Mom was waiting.
She knew where I had been.
"You found him.""
I stared at her.
"You knew.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"Dani...""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You knew.""
She sat down.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?""
"Losing everything.""
I laughed.
"So you sacrificed me.""
"No.""
"Yes.""
I stepped closer.
"You looked at your own daughter and decided I was the safest person to use.""
She cried quietly.
"I loved you.""
I shook my head.
"Love doesn't ask someone to carry a burden they never chose.""
Mom covered her face.
For once, she had no argument.
No explanation.
No way to make me feel guilty.
That night, I received a message from Kevin.
One sentence.
*Dad knows you found Thomas.*
Then another message appeared.
*He's coming to see you.*
I stared at the screen.
A minute later, another message came.
Not from Kevin.
May you like
From my father.
*We need to talk before you make a mistake you can't undo.*
