Chapter 6: The Letter My Mother Left Behind

My father stared at the envelope like it was something alive.

Something that could hurt him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The stranger who had been standing near the door suddenly looked nervous. Claire looked down at the floor. And I stood there, confused, waiting for someone to explain why my mother’s name was connected to everything.

Dad slowly opened the envelope.

The paper inside was old.

The edges were worn.

But my mother’s handwriting was still clear.

I recognized it immediately.

I had seen it on birthday cards, school notes, and the small messages she used to leave inside my lunchbox.

My father’s hands began to shake.

“Where did you get this?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Dad looked up.

“I asked you a question.””

She swallowed.

“I found it.””

“Where?””

“In the office.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“The office that only I had access to?””

Claire looked away.

That answer was enough.

He looked back at the letter.

Then he started reading.

His face changed with every line.

I watched the man who always seemed unbreakable slowly fall apart.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

Dad didn’t respond.

“Dad?””

He folded the paper.

“I need to read this alone.””

“No.””

Everyone turned toward me.

My voice surprised even myself.

“No more secrets.””

My father looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“You keep saying you’re protecting me, but everyone keeps lying to me.””

The room went silent.

Claire looked uncomfortable.

The stranger looked away.

My father closed his eyes.

For the first time, he looked less like my father and more like someone who was tired of carrying something too heavy.

Finally, he handed me the letter.

I hesitated.

Then I took it.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

Thomas, if you are reading this, something has gone terribly wrong.

I kept reading.

I found out who has been taking money from the company. I know you think it’s someone close to you, but you’re looking in the wrong direction.

My eyes moved faster.

The person responsible has been manipulating everyone around you. They want you to believe I betrayed you.

I looked at Dad.

He was watching my face.

I continued.

Please believe me. I never touched the money. I never wanted to leave you. Someone is trying to destroy our family.

My hands trembled.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

If anything happens to me, do not trust the person who comforts you first.

I stopped.

The room became cold.

Because everyone knew who had comforted my father after my mother died.

Claire.

My stepmother.

She had arrived in our lives months later.

She had held my father’s hand.

She had helped him “heal.””

But now everything looked different.

Dad took the letter from me.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

Claire looked at him.

“Thomas…”

He stepped back.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

The stranger suddenly moved toward the door.

Dad noticed.

“You.””

The man stopped.

“You were involved too.””

The man laughed.

“You’re finally figuring it out.””

My father walked toward him.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Claire.

Then back at Dad.

“My name is Daniel.””

I stared.

That name sounded familiar.

Dad’s face went pale.

“Daniel…”

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

My father whispered:

“Your brother.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked between them.

“What?””

Dad sat down.

“My younger brother.””

The truth hit me like another storm.

The man who helped steal our money wasn’t a stranger.

He was family.

Daniel leaned against the wall.

“You abandoned me years ago, Thomas.””

My father stared.

“I saved you.””

“You saved yourself.””

Daniel’s voice became bitter.

“You got everything. The company. The house. The respect.””

“That doesn’t justify what you did.””

Daniel laughed.

“You think this was about money?””

He looked at me.

“No.””

Then he looked at my father.

“This was about making you lose everything.””

A chill ran through me.

Dad grabbed the letter again.

“Did you kill her?””

The question changed the room.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Claire looked terrified.

I held my breath.

“Did you kill my wife?””

Daniel said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

My father took a step back.

“No…”

Daniel looked away.

“I didn’t plan for that.””

My stomach turned.

“You’re saying Mom died because of you?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Your mother found out too much.””

My father shouted:

“Get out!””

Daniel didn’t move.

“You still don’t understand.””

He pointed toward the letter.

“There’s another page.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Your wife hid the real evidence somewhere else.””

Claire suddenly whispered:

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Dad noticed.

“You know where it is.””

Claire said nothing.

My father walked closer.

“Where?””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

And quietly said:

“The place your son has been going every week.””

I frowned.

“What?””

May you like

Claire looked at me.

“The cemetery.””
