Chapter 7: The Secret Under My Mother’s Grave

The cemetery was silent except for the sound of our footsteps.

I hated that place.

Not because it was scary.

Because it reminded me of everything I lost.

My mother’s grave was at the back of the cemetery beneath a large oak tree.

I used to visit every Sunday.

I would sit there and talk about school.

About my friends.

About things I couldn’t tell anyone else.

I never thought someone was hiding something there.

My father walked beside me.

He hadn’t said much since we left the house.

Neither had I.

Finally, he spoke.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For every time I told you I was protecting you when I was actually protecting myself.””

I didn’t answer.

He continued.

“I should have told you the truth.””

“You should have trusted me.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

That was the first time I heard my father admit he was wrong.

When we reached the grave, Dad stopped.

He looked at the stone.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

I swallowed.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she wanted you safe.””

I looked at him.

“Safe from what?””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

We searched around the grave.

At first, there was nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A small crack near the bottom of the stone.

“Dad.””

He knelt down.

Behind the loose piece of stone was a small metal container.

My father opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And another letter.

This one was addressed to me.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

My sweet boy,

If you are reading this, it means I couldn’t tell you myself.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Your father is not the person you should fear. He made mistakes, but he loves you.

I looked at Dad.

He wiped his eyes.

I continued.

There is someone close to us who has been using our family for years. I need you to remember something: never trust someone just because they say they love you.

The message was clear.

My mother knew.

She knew someone would betray us.

At the bottom was one final sentence.

The person who helped me discover the truth was someone you would never expect.

I looked at Dad.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The name on the screen was visible.

Claire.

Dad answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice came through.

She sounded scared.

“Thomas, you need to listen to me.””

“Where are you?””

“Daniel knows about the flash drive.””

Dad looked at me.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

There was a pause.

Then Claire whispered:

“He’s coming for your son.””

My blood froze.

Dad stood immediately.

“Where are you?””

“I’m at the house.””

“You went back?””

“I had to.””

The call suddenly became filled with noise.

A crash.

A scream.

Then silence.

“Claire?””

No answer.

“Claire!””

The call ended.

My father grabbed my hand.

“We’re leaving.””

As we ran back toward the car, I looked at the flash drive in my pocket.

Something about it bothered me.

A thought I couldn’t shake.

My mother had hidden evidence.

She had trusted someone.

And that person was still alive.

When we reached the car, Dad stopped.

He looked at the house in the distance.

Then whispered:

“Your mother’s helper…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He opened the car door.

“She wasn’t alone when she discovered the truth.””

“Who was with her?””

My father looked terrified.

May you like

Then he said:

“The person who has been protecting you this whole time.””
