Chapter 8: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
The photograph was impossible.
I stared at it until my eyes began to hurt.
Daniel.
My father.
And Rachel.
Standing together years before I had ever hired her.
Years before she became my assistant.
Years before she became the person I trusted with every detail of my life.
The person who knew my schedule.
My passwords.
My meetings.
My fears.
My weaknesses.
The person who had stood beside me all night pretending to discover the truth with me.
My hand lowered slowly.
Rachel noticed.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Her expression changed.
“Claire?””
I turned the phone toward her.
The color drained from her face.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
A reaction.
Recognition.
“You know this photograph.””
Her lips parted.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stepped back.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“Claire, I can explain.””
Those words.
Those same words.
Everyone had an explanation.
Daniel.
My mother.
Elias.
Everyone.
And every explanation came after the damage was already done.
“How long?””
Rachel looked confused.
“What?””
“How long have you known my father?””
Silence.
That was enough.
I looked at the woman who had spent years telling me she was loyal.
The woman who had stayed late in my office.
The woman who had comforted me after my father died.
“How long?””
She looked away.
“Since before you hired me.””
My chest tightened.
I laughed once.
A quiet, broken sound.
“Of course.””
“Claire, please listen.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m tired of listening.””
The old maintenance road stretched behind us. The shipyard sat abandoned in the distance. Somewhere inside that building were answers my father had hidden.
And somehow, the person who had been helping me search for those answers had been part of the secret.
Rachel stepped closer.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Everyone says that.””
“I’m serious.””
“So am I.””
My voice rose.
“You watched me grieve my father while knowing there was more.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because your father asked me to.””
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Not another person using my father’s name as a reason.
“You all keep saying that.””
“He knew Victor was watching everyone around you.””
“So he placed spies in my life?””
Rachel flinched.
The word landed.
Because it was accurate.
“Is that what I was?””
“No.””
“Then what were you?””
She looked at the ground.
“My father worked with yours.””
I frowned.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“Daniel isn’t the only person your father recruited.””
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?””
“My family was involved too.””
The pieces shifted.
Not into clarity.
Into something worse.
A bigger mystery.
“How many people knew?””
Rachel looked at me.
“More than you think.””
I stepped away.
“Who else?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Rachel.””
“Claire, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your father didn’t create a plan because he didn’t trust you.””
She paused.
“He created a plan because he trusted you too much.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Before she could answer, headlights appeared at the end of the road.
A black SUV stopped.
The door opened.
Daniel stepped out.
My heart reacted before my mind could.
Even after everything.
Even after the kiss.
Even after the lies.
Seeing him still hurt.
He looked exhausted.
Not like the confident man from the ship.
Like someone who had been running for years.
Rachel immediately stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know that’s not your decision.””
I watched them.
The familiarity between them bothered me.
Not romantic.
Not like that.
Something else.
A shared history.
A shared mission.
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire.””
I didn’t move.
“Tell me one thing.””
He waited.
“Was any of it real?””
His expression changed.
The question hurt him.
Good.
Because I was hurting too.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
“The marriage?””
“Yes.””
“The love?””
“Yes.””
“The way you looked at me every day?””
His voice lowered.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“Then why?””
Daniel took a step forward.
“Because your father believed someone was going to destroy you.””
“And you thought breaking my heart was the solution?””
“No.””
“Then what was the solution?””
His jaw tightened.
“Making Victor believe you were no longer protected.””
I stared.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then at me.
“Victor knew about me.””
My brow furrowed.
“What?””
“He knew I was close to your father.””
“Then why marry me?””
“Because Victor believed I was using you to gain control of the company.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Your father needed Victor to believe I had turned against you.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“The kiss.””
Daniel looked down.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“You’re saying Vanessa…”
“She was watching.””
“Watching what?””
“Whether I still cared about you.””
I stared at him.
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
He looked at Rachel.
“Tell her.””
Rachel closed her eyes.
Then spoke.
“Vanessa was never Daniel’s affair.””
My heart stopped.
“Then what was she?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“An informant.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is an informant now.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I know how it looks.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You don’t.””
The anger finally broke through.
“You don’t know what it felt like standing there.””
My voice shook.
“I saw my husband with another woman.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
“How?””
“Because I watched your face.””
Silence.
He looked away.
“I was there.””
My anger froze.
“What?””
“I was outside the ballroom.””
I stared.
“You were watching?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa was supposed to give me proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small drive.
“This.””
He handed it to me.
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“The recording that proves Victor ordered your father’s murder.””
The world went quiet.
“You have that?””
Daniel nodded.
“Vanessa stole it from him.””
“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””
His expression broke.
“Because Victor knew I had it.””
“And?””
“And if I gave it to you, you would become his target.””
I stared at him.
“Instead, you made me hate you.””
A painful silence.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Again.
I looked at Rachel.
“And you?””
She looked ashamed.
“I was assigned to watch over you.””
“Assigned.””
The word felt empty.
“Yes.””
“So all these years…”
“Claire.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“All these years, I thought I built a life.””
My voice became quieter.
“But apparently, everyone around me was protecting a mission.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Not everyone.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He reached into his pocket.
A small envelope.
“My father left this for you.””
I frowned.
“Your father?””
Daniel nodded.
“My father knew yours.””
I took the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Different handwriting.
Older.
The first line made my breath stop.
*Claire, if you are reading this, then Daniel failed at the one thing I asked him to do.*
I looked up.
Daniel’s face was pale.
“What?””
I continued reading.
*He was supposed to protect you without making you hate him.*
My fingers tightened.
The next sentence made my heart stop.
*But I knew that would be impossible because there was one truth even Daniel did not know.*
I turned the page.
Only one line remained.
*Victor Hale was never the person who betrayed your father.*
A chill moved through me.
I looked at Daniel.
“Then who was?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
Not Victor.
Not Elias.
Someone else.
Someone older.
Someone calm.
“Claire.””
I froze.
Because I recognized the voice.
I had heard it once before.
In old family recordings.
My father’s closest friend.
A man who attended every family holiday.
A man who helped raise me.
The voice whispered:
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?””
The answer came softly.
“Your father’s oldest friend.””
May you like
A pause.
“And the person who actually killed him.””
