Chapter 9: The Man Behind My Father’s Death

The voice on the phone belonged to someone I had spent my entire childhood trusting.

Someone who sat at our dinner table.

Someone who knew my favorite foods.

Someone who attended my father’s birthday parties.

Someone who hugged me after my mother disappeared.

A man who had always been introduced as family.

“Uncle Richard.””

The name left my mouth before I even realized I had said it.

Across from me, Daniel’s expression changed.

Rachel went completely still.

Even Emily looked shocked.

The silence told me everything.

They knew him.

They feared him.

“Claire,” Richard said quietly through the phone.

Hearing him say my name brought back memories I didn’t want.

His deep voice reading stories when I was young.

His laughter filling our house.

His hand on my shoulder at my father’s funeral.

The same hand that might have helped destroy my family.

“You remember me,” he said.

My grip tightened around the phone.

“I remember everything.””

A pause.

Then:

“Good.””

The calmness of his answer made my stomach turn.

“You killed my father.””

I expected denial.

I expected anger.

Instead, Richard sighed.

“As always, your father underestimated how much you would understand.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t listen to him.””

Richard heard him.

“Daniel.””

The way he said the name was not surprise.

It was recognition.

“You always were loyal to the wrong family.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to talk about loyalty.””

Richard laughed softly.

“You still believe you’re the hero.””

My chest tightened.

“Stop.””

Both men went silent.

I looked around at everyone.

My entire life had become a conversation between people who knew secrets I never had access to.

I was done being the person outside the circle.

“You’re going to tell me the truth.””

Richard said nothing.

I continued.

“No more protecting me.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Apparently, protecting me is what destroyed my life.””

Emily looked down.

Daniel looked away.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Because they all knew I was right.

Richard finally spoke.

“Claire, your father was a good man.””

“Don’t.””

“I mean that.””

“You don’t get to praise him.””

“I’m not praising him.””

His voice became colder.

“I’m explaining why he had to die.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My hand shook.

“You admit it?””

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Richard continued.

“Your father built something powerful. Something that could change how resources moved across the world.””

I looked at Daniel.

The same explanation.

The same story.

“But he refused to share it.””

“Because it wasn’t yours.””

A pause.

Then Richard said:

“That was the problem.””

I felt anger rising.

“My father built something to help people.””

“Yes.””

“And you wanted control.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was terrifying.

“You’re not even ashamed.””

“Shame does not bring back dead people.””

I stared at the phone.

“What happened that night?””

Richard was silent.

Then:

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That the people closest to him were divided.””

My eyes moved toward Rachel.

Then Daniel.

Then Elias.

Everyone had a piece.

Everyone had been hiding.

Richard continued.

“Your father trusted too many people.””

“And you?””

“I was the only one honest about what I wanted.””

I almost laughed.

“You murdered him and called that honesty?””

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the answer made my skin crawl.

Daniel reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

He stopped.

“This is my conversation.””

Richard spoke again.

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I need you to hear this from me.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What?””

“Your father did not die because of the company.””

I waited.

“He died because of your mother.””

The words echoed.

Again.

My mother.

Always my mother.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman everyone blamed.

I looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

Richard continued.

“She knew what your father was hiding.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Richard, stop.””

The anger in her voice was immediate.

Not fear.

Anger.

That was new.

Richard laughed.

“Still protecting her?””

My mother looked at me.

“Claire, don’t believe him.””

I looked between them.

“Then tell me.””

Her face broke.

“I tried.””

“Tell me now.””

She looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“Your father found evidence that Richard was moving money through illegal channels.””

Richard interrupted.

“Careful.””

She ignored him.

“He was going to expose him.””

My breathing slowed.

“So you disappeared because of that?””

“Yes.””

“Why fake your death?””

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Because Richard threatened you.””

The room went silent.

I felt Daniel move closer.

Emily continued.

“He told me if I stayed, you would become his way to punish your father.””

My voice became small.

“And Dad?””

She looked down.

“Your father asked me to leave.””

That hurt.

“He asked you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he thought he could handle Richard alone.””

She wiped a tear away.

“He was wrong.””

Richard’s voice returned.

“You see, Claire? Everyone has a version of the story.””

I looked at the phone.

“But only one person died.””

A silence followed.

Then Richard said:

“And now you’re in danger.””

I almost smiled.

“Is that supposed to scare me?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“It’s supposed to prepare you.””

A sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Then Richard spoke quietly.

“Claire, look at the photograph from your father’s vault again.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The one with Daniel and your father.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What about it?””

Richard said:

“Look at who took the photograph.””

My heart stopped.

I grabbed the picture from the table.

The back had a date.

A location.

And a small handwritten note.

I had ignored it before.

Because I was too focused on the people in the image.

Now I turned it over.

The handwriting was my father’s.

*Taken by R.H.*

My fingers went cold.

Richard Hale.

The same man who claimed he killed my father.

The same man who had photographed my father’s final alliance.

But then I noticed something else.

A reflection in the glass behind them.

A person standing farther away.

Someone who had been there.

Someone hidden.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I handed him the photograph.

His expression changed.

“No.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“There.””

In the reflection.

A fourth person.

Not Richard.

Not my father.

Not Daniel.

A woman.

Standing near the shipyard entrance.

Emily stared.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all recognized her.

It was Vanessa.

The woman I thought was Daniel’s affair.

The woman who was supposed to be Victor Hale’s daughter.

But the date on the photograph was impossible.

Vanessa looked exactly the same.

Twenty years ago.

And now.

Rachel whispered:

“That’s not possible.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

His face was pale.

“I don’t know.””

Richard spoke again.

“Now you understand.””

I lifted the phone.

“Understand what?””

His voice lowered.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who discovered a secret.””

A pause.

“Vanessa wasn’t Victor’s daughter.””

My heart raced.

“Then who was she?””

Richard answered:

“She was the daughter of the person who actually controlled everything.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Claire, the person you have been searching for…”

The line crackled.

“…has been standing beside you for years.””

The call ended.

Everyone looked at each other.

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Vanessa.

One sentence.

*Claire, if you want the truth about your father’s death, come alone.*

Below it was a location.

The same location where my father died.

May you like

And the final message made my blood run cold.

*I know who was there when he took his last breath.*
