THE SECRET BENEATH HER VEIL / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Stopped the Wedding

“Does anyone have any reason why this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony?””

The pastor's voice echoed through the grand church.

For one beautiful second, nobody moved.

Daniel stood at the altar in a perfectly tailored black suit, his shoulders relaxed, his hands clasped in front of him. Beside him, Olivia looked breathtaking in her white wedding gown. Delicate lace covered her shoulders, a long veil flowed down her back, and her carefully styled wig framed her face beneath the soft church lighting.

She had dreamed of this moment for years.

The white roses. The golden decorations. The people she loved sitting in the pews.

And Daniel.

Especially Daniel.

He glanced at her and smiled.

“You okay, babe?”” he whispered.

Olivia nodded, although her fingers were trembling around her bouquet.

“I'm more than okay,” she whispered back.

“I'm finally marrying you.””

Daniel chuckled softly.

“Then let's make it official.””

The pastor smiled and turned toward the congregation.

“Is there anyone present who wishes to speak before we continue?””

Silence.

Then—

BANG!

The enormous wooden church doors swung open.

Every head turned.

A woman stood in the entrance, dressed in a deep moss-green gown with a dramatic slit along one leg. Her heels clicked against the marble floor as she stepped inside.

She didn't look around nervously.

She didn't hesitate.

She walked as if the entire building belonged to her.

The wedding guests exchanged confused glances.

A woman in the front pew leaned toward her husband.

“Who is that?”” she whispered.

“I have no idea,” he replied.

The stranger continued down the aisle, her eyes fixed on the altar.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Olivia tightened her grip on her bouquet.

The woman stopped halfway down the aisle.

“STOP THIS WEDDING NOW!””

Her voice struck the church like a thunderclap.

The pastor lowered his microphone.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Ma'am, what's going on?”” he asked.

The woman ignored him.

She pointed directly at Olivia.

“The bride is hiding something from the groom.””

A wave of whispers traveled through the pews.

Olivia's lips parted, but no words came out.

Daniel stepped slightly in front of her.

“Who are you?”” he demanded.

The woman gave him a cold smile.

“Someone who knows the truth about the woman you're about to marry.””

“Then say what you came here to say,” Daniel replied.

She approached the altar, her heels striking the floor with deliberate precision.

Olivia's mother rose from her seat.

“Excuse me! You cannot come into our daughter's wedding and start making accusations!””

The woman turned her head.

“Sit down. This has nothing to do with you.””

“Don't you dare speak to me like that!””

The pastor raised one hand.

“Everyone, please. Let's remain calm.””

But the stranger wasn't interested in calming anyone.

She stopped directly in front of Daniel.

Then she looked at Olivia's head.

“Daniel, tell your wife to remove her wig.””

The entire church went quiet.

Olivia froze.

Daniel blinked.

“What did you just say?””

“You heard me,” the woman answered.

“Tell her to remove that wig. Today, I will expose her secret.””

Olivia's eyes began to fill with tears.

She lowered her bouquet slightly.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Not here.””

The stranger took another step.

“Olivia, remove that wig.””

Daniel immediately reached for his bride's hand.

“Babe, don't listen to her. Don't be scared. I'm here. You don't need to take off your wig.””

His voice was gentle, but his expression had changed.

He was no longer smiling.

The woman laughed bitterly.

“Oh, Daniel. You're defending her without even knowing what she's hiding?””

“I said enough,” Daniel replied.

“You think you know everything about your bride?””

“I know enough to know that you have no right to humiliate her.””

The woman suddenly lunged toward Olivia.

Daniel moved instantly.

He stepped between them, shielding Olivia with his body.

The woman's hand stopped short as Daniel blocked her path.

A sharp musical sting filled the silence.

Guests gasped.

Olivia's veil shifted slightly over her shoulder.

“GET BACK!”” Daniel shouted.

The pastor hurried toward the couple.

“Security! Someone please escort this woman out!””

But the stranger didn't retreat.

She stood there, breathing hard, staring past Daniel at Olivia.

And then she said something that made Olivia's face turn completely pale.

“Ask your bride why she hasn't told you what happened twelve years ago.””

Daniel slowly turned his head.

“Twelve years ago?””

Olivia closed her eyes.

For the first time that morning, she looked as though she might collapse.

Daniel held her hand tighter.

“Olivia,” he whispered.

“What is she talking about?””

Olivia opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the woman in green reached into her handbag.

And pulled out a photograph.

May you like

A photograph of Olivia.

Except the woman in the picture looked nothing like the bride standing at the altar.
