THE SECRET BENEATH HER VEIL / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: My Sister Didn't Recognize Me

“Amara?””

Olivia's voice broke.

The young woman didn't move.

She stood near the church doors, one hand gripping the strap of her handbag.

Her eyes traveled from Olivia's white wedding gown to Daniel's black suit, then to the people gathered around the altar.

Finally, she looked at Vanessa.

“You said she would be here.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She is.””

Amara looked at Olivia again.

“That's her?””

Olivia took one step forward.

“It's me, sweetheart.””

Amara's expression remained cold.

“Don't call me that.””

The words cut through Olivia.

She stopped walking.

Daniel gently placed a hand on her back.

“Baby, take your time.””

Amara approached the altar.

Her footsteps were slow and measured.

When she reached the first row, she looked directly at Olivia.

“I've seen your picture.””

Olivia nodded.

“I have yours too.””

“Vanessa showed me.””

Olivia tried to smile through her tears.

“You look so much like Mama.””

Amara's jaw tightened.

“I don't remember her.””

Olivia's smile disappeared.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Amara glanced toward the guests.

“Because I spent years asking questions about my family. Nobody had answers. Every time I asked where I came from, people told me to be grateful for the family I had.””

She looked at Margaret.

“Especially her.””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Amara, I never wanted to hurt you.””

Amara laughed softly.

“You gave me a bedroom. You bought me clothes. You took me on vacations. You gave me everything except the truth.””

Margaret began crying.

“I loved you.””

“I know.””

Amara's voice softened briefly.

“That's what made it worse.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Amara, I'm Daniel.””

She looked at him.

“I know.””

He nodded.

“I remember you from when you were little. I remember the chocolate milk.””

For the first time, Amara's expression changed.

“You used to bring it with too much ice.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You always complained about that.””

A tiny smile appeared on Amara's face.

Then it vanished.

“I remember you.””

Olivia watched them, overwhelmed.

“Can I hug you?””

Amara looked at her for several seconds.

Then she shook her head.

“Not yet.””

Olivia nodded.

“Okay.””

Vanessa approached them.

“Amara, I think it's time everyone heard the truth.””

Amara looked at her.

“You promised me you wouldn't turn this into a public spectacle.””

“I didn't plan for the wedding to happen this way.””

“But you came here to expose her.””

Vanessa looked toward Olivia.

“I came here because you deserved answers.””

Amara shook her head.

“Then you should have brought the answers. Not accusations.””

The entire church went silent.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Daniel glanced at Olivia.

“She's right.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You're all acting like I'm the villain here.””

Amara turned toward her.

“I never said you were.””

“After everything I did for you?””

“You helped me find my sister. I'll never forget that. But you also told me things about Olivia that weren't true.””

Olivia looked up.

“What things?””

Amara hesitated.

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Amara, don't.””

“No. I'm done being told what I can say.””

She turned toward Olivia.

“Vanessa told me you knew I was alive. She said you never wanted me back.””

Olivia looked as though someone had struck her.

“What?””

“She said you chose to forget me.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No. No, sweetheart.””

Amara looked down.

“I believed her.””

Olivia's tears fell freely.

“I thought you were dead.””

Amara stared at her.

“Why would everyone tell you that?””

Olivia turned toward Marcus.

“Ask him.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Amara, I made the decision because—”

“Don't.””

Amara's voice was firm.

“You don't get to explain my childhood away.””

Marcus stopped.

Amara approached him.

“You were my father too. You know that?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I know.””

“You used to carry me on your shoulders. You used to call me your little shadow.””

His eyes filled.

“Amara…”

“And then one day, I woke up in a different house, with different people, and nobody would tell me why.””

Marcus wiped his face.

“I thought you would have a better life.””

“You didn't even say goodbye.””

He lowered his head.

Amara stepped away.

Then she turned toward Denise.

“Did you know?””

Denise nodded.

“I did.””

“Did you try to find me?””

Denise's lips trembled.

“I tried.””

Amara looked at her.

“When?””

Denise struggled to speak.

“After the adoption was finalized.””

Amara laughed bitterly.

“So you waited until it was too late?””

Denise covered her mouth.

“I was afraid.””

“Everybody was afraid. Nobody thought about how scared I was.””

Olivia couldn't stand watching her sister cry.

She took a careful step forward.

“Amara, I don't expect you to forgive anybody today. I don't even expect you to trust me.””

Amara looked at her.

“But I want you to know something.””

Olivia touched the edge of her veil.

“I never forgot you. I remembered the little things. Your stuffed rabbit.

The way you used to hide under the dining table when it rained. The way you would steal the marshmallows from my hot chocolate.””

Amara's eyes began to glisten.

Olivia continued.

“I used to dream that you would walk through our front door. I used to wake up and run downstairs because I thought I heard your voice.””

Amara looked away.

“Stop.””

“I'm sorry.””

“Please stop.””

Olivia fell silent.

Daniel moved beside his bride.

“Amara, you don't owe anybody forgiveness. But if you want to know what kind of person Olivia is, let me tell you.””

Amara looked at him.

“She has spent the last three years helping children at a local community center. She doesn't talk about it much, but she goes there every Saturday. She helped me organize a fundraiser for families who lost their homes.””

Amara glanced at Olivia.

Daniel continued.

“She never wanted a perfect wedding. She wanted a family. That's all.””

Olivia looked at him with gratitude.

But Amara wasn't ready.

“I don't know her,” she said.

Daniel nodded.

“That's fair.””

Then Amara turned toward Margaret.

“There's something else I want to ask you.””

Margaret approached.

“Anything.””

“Why did you adopt me?””

Margaret's expression crumpled.

“Because I loved you.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Margaret swallowed.

“Your mother and I had been close friends for years. Before the fire, I had lost a pregnancy. I was struggling, and your mother knew how much I wanted a child.””

Denise nodded slowly.

Margaret continued.

“When you came into my home, I became attached to you. I convinced myself that keeping you was the right thing to do.””

Amara's voice trembled.

“So you used my tragedy to fill a hole in your life?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“When you say it like that, I understand how terrible it sounds.””

“It's terrible because it happened.””

Margaret nodded.

“You're right.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom, did Dad know?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Your father knew about the placement.””

“Did he know you adopted her?””

“Yes.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why did you tell me she was just a family friend's daughter?””

Margaret's face changed.

“Because your father asked me to keep the arrangement private.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked toward Marcus.

And Marcus finally spoke.

“Because I had another reason for wanting Amara away from the family.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“What reason?””

Marcus took a long breath.

“The fire wasn't an accident.””

Olivia's bouquet had been lying forgotten on the chair.

A guest dropped a program.

The pastor stared at Marcus.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus looked at his daughters.

“The fire started in the house because someone had been trying to destroy something inside it.””

Amara's eyes widened.

“What was inside the house?””

Marcus looked directly at Olivia.

“A box.””

Olivia frowned.

“What box?””

“The one your mother kept in her bedroom.””

Denise shook her head.

“Marcus, don't.””

He continued.

“After the fire, I found it. Inside were documents about the family. Documents that could have changed everything.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What documents?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Documents proving that the story we told everyone about Amara's birth was a lie.””

Olivia stared at him.

“What?””

Marcus looked at both women.

“Amara wasn't just your little sister.””

He paused.

“She was the child your mother had been trying to protect from the very beginning.””

Denise began crying.

Amara looked between them.

“Protect me from whom?””

May you like

Marcus's answer was barely audible.

“From me.””
