Chapter 3: The Guest in the Third Row
Daniel slowly lowered the hospital document.
“Who signed this?””
Vanessa looked toward the congregation.
“Why don't you ask the person who signed it?””
Every guest turned.
At first, nobody moved.
Then a man in the third row stood up.
Olivia's father.
Marcus James.
He was wearing a charcoal suit and a silver tie. His expression was unusually controlled, but his hands were gripping the back of the pew in front of him.
Olivia stared at him.
“Daddy?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel looked between them.
“Mr. James, do you know what she's talking about?””
Marcus adjusted his jacket.
“Daniel, this isn't the time.””
Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.
“That's what you said twelve years ago.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Vanessa, sit down and stop making a scene.””
“You had twelve years to tell the truth.””
“I said stop.””
Olivia's mother, Denise, rose beside him.
“Marcus, what is happening?””
He turned toward her.
“Sit down, Denise.””
She stared at him.
“Don't you dare order me to sit down.””
The congregation fell silent again.
Vanessa walked toward the third row.
“Do you remember the night of the fire, Marcus?””
Marcus didn't move.
“Of course I remember.””
“Do you remember taking Olivia to the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“Do you remember telling everyone that Amara had been taken somewhere safe?””
His eyes narrowed.
“That's enough.””
Vanessa raised the document.
“Then explain this.””
Marcus looked at it.
For the first time, his composure cracked.
Olivia turned toward him.
“Daddy, what is she talking about?””
Marcus took a breath.
“Your wedding day should be about you and Daniel.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
“Olivia—”
“Please.””
Her voice was barely audible.
Daniel stood beside her, still holding her hand.
“Mr. James, I think she deserves an answer.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“You don't understand what you're getting involved in.””
Daniel nodded.
“Then help me understand.””
Vanessa returned to the altar.
“Let me make it simple. After the fire, Amara was taken to a hospital. Olivia was there.
I was there. Marcus was there.””
She pointed at the document.
“But when the hospital asked who would take responsibility for the little girl, someone signed a form that changed everything.””
Denise covered her mouth.
Olivia stared at the paper.
“Daddy, did you sign something?””
Marcus looked away.
Vanessa answered for him.
“He didn't sign it alone.””
A heavy silence followed.
Olivia's breathing quickened.
“Who else?””
Vanessa turned toward the bride.
“You did.””
Olivia shook her head immediately.
“No.””
Vanessa held the paper toward her.
“Look at the signature.””
Olivia didn't take it.
“I was sixteen.””
“You were old enough to understand what you were doing.””
“I was a child!””
“And Amara was younger than you!””
Daniel moved closer to Olivia.
“Vanessa, stop shouting at her.””
Vanessa turned on him.
“You keep defending her because you don't know what she did.””
Daniel's voice remained steady.
“I know she was sixteen. I know she survived a fire. And I know you're standing in the middle of her wedding trying to turn her worst memories into public entertainment.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“Her worst memories?””
She pointed at Olivia's wig.
“Do you know why she wears that?””
Daniel looked at Olivia.
She lowered her head.
Vanessa continued.
“Because that fire left scars. Because she lost most of her hair. Because she couldn't stand looking in the mirror afterward.””
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Denise began crying.
“Vanessa, please. You're humiliating her.””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“You knew too, Denise.””
Denise froze.
Marcus reached for his wife's arm.
“Don't say anything.””
She pulled away.
“I'm tired of being silent.””
Olivia looked at her mother.
“Mama?””
Denise walked slowly toward the altar.
Her eyes were red.
“Baby, I wanted to tell you.””
Olivia stared at her.
“You knew about the papers?””
Denise nodded.
“I knew there had been a decision about Amara.””
“What decision?””
Denise glanced at Marcus.
He shook his head.
But she continued.
“Your father told me the little girl would be placed with a family who could give her the care she needed.””
Olivia's face crumpled.
“Where?””
Denise's voice broke.
“He said he would explain when you were older.””
Olivia turned toward Marcus.
“You told me Amara died.””
The words came out like a whisper.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Daniel's expression changed.
“What?””
Olivia looked at him.
“When I woke up in the hospital, Daddy told me Amara didn't survive the fire.””
Vanessa nodded bitterly.
“That's what they told you.””
Olivia stared at her father.
“Was it a lie?””
Marcus remained silent.
“Daddy!””
He finally spoke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
“From what happened that night.””
Olivia's tears rolled down her cheeks.
“You let me believe my sister was dead for twelve years.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“I thought it was best.””
Denise shook her head.
“No. You thought it was easier.””
The pastor quietly stepped away from the altar, allowing the family to speak.
The guests were no longer whispering.
They were listening.
Daniel gently removed Olivia's bouquet from the floor and placed it on a nearby chair.
Then he took both her hands.
“Baby, look at me.””
Olivia looked up.
“I don't know what happened,” he said.
“But I know you don't have to face it alone.””
She nodded, trying to breathe.
Vanessa watched them.
For a moment, her expression softened.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
“I didn't come here just to show you a photograph.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What else do you want?””
Vanessa unlocked her phone.
“I came because I finally found Amara.””
Olivia stopped breathing.
“What?””
Vanessa turned the screen toward her.
A photograph appeared.
A young Black woman stood outside a small building, wearing a blue jacket. Her hair was long and dark, and she had a familiar smile.
Olivia stared at the screen.
Her fingers began to tremble.
“That's…”
Vanessa nodded.
“Your sister.””
Olivia reached toward the phone.
“Where is she? Where is my sister?””
Vanessa pulled the phone back slightly.
“Before I tell you, there's something you need to understand.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why are you playing games?””
“Because Amara doesn't know the whole story either.””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don't understand.””
Vanessa looked directly at her.
“She's been looking for the people who abandoned her.””
Olivia covered her mouth.
“I never abandoned her.””
“That's what I told her.””
“Then bring her here. Please. I need to see her.””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she glanced toward Marcus.
“There's one more problem.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Vanessa, don't.””
She ignored him.
“The person who raised Amara all these years isn't the person you think.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Who raised her?””
Marcus's face had gone pale.
Vanessa slowly turned the phone around.
The screen showed a second photograph.
This one was older.
It showed Amara standing beside a woman.
A woman Daniel recognized.
His own mother.
His lips parted.
“That's impossible.””
Olivia looked at him.
“Daniel?””
He stared at the photograph.
Then he looked toward the church doors.
“Why is my mother in a picture with your sister?””
Vanessa's expression turned cold.
“Because your family has been part of this secret from the beginning.””
At that exact moment, Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
He opened it.
There were only nine words.
*Don't marry Olivia until you hear what your mother did.*
Daniel looked up.
The church doors were still open.
And standing just beyond them was an older woman in a cream-colored coat.
His mother.
She was holding another photograph.
And she wasn't looking at Daniel.
May you like
She was looking straight at Olivia.
