Chapter 2: The Photograph Nobody Was Supposed to See

The photograph trembled slightly between the stranger's fingers.

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?””

The woman in green held it high enough for the first few rows to see.

“Something your bride hoped you would never discover.””

Olivia's bouquet slipped from her fingers.

White roses scattered across the polished floor.

“Put that away,” Olivia whispered.

The stranger's eyes narrowed.

“Why? Are you embarrassed?””

“Please don't do this.””

“Don't do what, Olivia? Tell the truth?””

Daniel turned fully toward his bride.

“Baby, look at me.””

Olivia couldn't.

Her eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

Daniel gently touched her chin.

“Olivia. I need you to tell me what's happening.””

She swallowed.

“Not here.””

The woman in green laughed.

“Of course. She wants privacy now. Funny how she didn't mind keeping secrets while planning an entire wedding.””

Daniel looked back at her.

“What's your name?””

“Vanessa.””

“Vanessa what?””

“Vanessa Brooks.””

Daniel waited.

“Do you know Olivia?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Better than you ever will.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No, you don't.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Oh, I remember you perfectly.””

She lowered the photograph.

“Twelve years ago, you stood in front of a mirror and made a promise. Do you remember what you said?””

Olivia's breathing became uneven.

“Stop.””

“You said nobody would ever see you the way you looked that night.””

Daniel frowned.

“What night?””

Vanessa ignored him.

She turned toward the guests.

“Everybody here thinks they're watching a beautiful love story. They think Olivia is a woman who found a wonderful man and is about to start a wonderful life.””

She pointed at the bride.

“But they don't know what happened before she met him.””

Olivia wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Vanessa, you have no idea what I went through.””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“I know exactly what you went through.””

“Then you should know why I don't want to talk about it.””

For a moment, something flickered across Vanessa's face.

Not sympathy.

Something closer to resentment.

Then she raised the photograph again.

“Daniel, look at the picture.””

Daniel didn't move.

“I don't need a picture to decide whether I love my wife.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Your wife?””

“Yes. My wife.””

“We'll see how long you keep calling her that.””

The pastor stepped between them.

“Miss Brooks, this is a wedding ceremony. If you have a legitimate concern, you can discuss it privately. You cannot continue disrupting this service.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Pastor, you are about to marry two people while one of them is hiding a major truth.””

The pastor looked at Olivia.

“Is there something you would like to say?””

Olivia's eyes moved from the pastor to Daniel.

Her lips trembled.

“I didn't lie about loving him.””

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“I know.””

“I never lied about wanting this marriage.””

“I know that too.””

“But there's something I was afraid to tell you.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Don't make this easier for her. She has had twelve years to tell you.””

Daniel's patience finally snapped.

“Why are you so determined to hurt her?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Because she destroyed my family.””

The words landed heavily.

A few guests gasped.

Daniel's eyebrows drew together.

“Your family?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's right.””

Olivia shook her head.

“Your family was already falling apart.””

“You don't get to rewrite history!””

“I never asked you to forgive me.””

“No. You just disappeared and let everybody else deal with the consequences.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Can someone please explain what happened?””

Vanessa stepped toward the altar.

“Twelve years ago, Olivia and I were inseparable. We were like sisters. We shared everything.””

Olivia lowered her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“Then one night, something happened. Something that changed both our lives.””

“What happened?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa smiled without warmth.

“Ask Olivia what she did after the accident.””

Olivia's knees seemed to weaken.

Daniel caught her elbow.

“Accident?”” he repeated.

Vanessa nodded.

“She knows exactly what I'm talking about.””

Daniel turned toward Olivia.

“Baby?””

Olivia finally looked at him.

“There was a fire.””

The church became completely silent.

“A fire?”” Daniel asked.

She nodded slowly.

“Twelve years ago. At the house where I grew up.””

Vanessa's expression sharpened.

“Tell him the rest.””

Olivia's voice broke.

“I was there.””

“So was I,” Vanessa said.

Daniel looked confused.

“Were you both hurt?””

Vanessa laughed once.

“That's what you want to know?””

She held up the photograph again.

“Look at her face, Daniel. Look carefully.””

Daniel finally reached for it.

Olivia tried to stop him.

“Daniel, please.””

But he had already taken the photograph.

It showed a younger Olivia standing beside a hospital bed. Her hair was covered with a scarf, and a large section of her face was turned away from the camera.

Behind her stood Vanessa.

And between them was a little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

Daniel stared at the picture.

“Who's the child?””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“That's where the real story begins.””

Olivia whispered a name.

“Amara.””

Vanessa looked directly at her.

“Tell him who Amara was.””

Olivia's tears finally spilled over.

“She was my little sister.””

Daniel glanced at the photograph again.

Then at Olivia.

“Was?””

Olivia couldn't answer.

Vanessa leaned toward him.

“Your bride has spent twelve years pretending the past never happened. But the little girl in that photograph didn't disappear.””

Daniel's fingers tightened around the picture.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa looked at Olivia.

“That's what I came here to find out.””

Olivia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Liar.””

Daniel stepped between them again.

“Don't call her that.””

Vanessa reached into her handbag for a second time.

This time, she removed a folded piece of paper.

“I brought something else.””

She unfolded it carefully.

At the top was an old hospital document.

Daniel glanced at the date.

Then his eyes stopped at the name written beneath the heading.

*Olivia James.*

But the signature at the bottom belonged to someone else.

Daniel looked up.

“Why does this document have your name on it, Vanessa?””

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she turned toward the bride.

“Because Olivia wasn't the only person who signed those papers.””

And then she revealed the name of the person who had helped her.

It was someone sitting in the church.

Someone Olivia had invited to her wedding.

Someone who had been watching the entire confrontation without saying a single word.
