Chapter 6: The Record Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Mark read the five words until they stopped looking like words.

The second record must remain hidden.

Beneath them was Claire's name.

He lifted the sheet and examined the handwriting. The ink had faded slightly, and the paper had softened along its folds, but the message remained clear.

“What second record?”” he asked.

Danielle stood beside the counter, her face drawn.

“I don't know exactly what was in it.””

“You brought this here, so you must know something.””

“I know what Thomas told me.””

“Then tell me.””

Danielle glanced toward Claire.

“Not in front of Lily.””

Mark shook his head.

“Stop deciding what I can hear in front of my own daughter.””

The nurse intervened gently.

“Mr. Bennett, Lily can hear everything we're saying. If this discussion continues, we need to make sure she's comfortable and has the option to step away from it.””

Mark looked at his daughter.

She was watching him with anxious eyes.

He immediately softened his voice.

“Sweetheart, we're going to take care of you first. The adults can work through the paperwork without asking you to solve anything.””

Lily nodded, but her fingers remained curled around the edge of her cardigan.

The nurse checked on her again, asking about her discomfort and whether she wanted water. After making sure Lily was settled, she explained that the medical assessment would continue independently of the family's questions about the documents.

Mark thanked her.

Then he turned back to Danielle.

“We can talk outside. But you're going to answer my questions.””

Danielle nodded.

Claire moved toward the door.

“I'm coming with you.””

Mark stopped her.

“Not yet.””

Her expression crumpled.

“Mark, you can't exclude me from a conversation about my own family.””

“You've excluded me for eight years.””

“I was trying to protect you!””

“And now I'm trying to understand what you were protecting me from.””

He lowered his voice.

“I'll be right outside. The nurse will stay with Lily. If she needs me, I'm coming straight back.””

Lily reached for his hand.

“Don't go far.””

“I won't.””

He squeezed her fingers and followed Danielle into the hallway.

Claire remained in the examination room.

For the first time that day, she didn't try to stop him.

The hallway smelled faintly of disinfectant and coffee. Somewhere farther down, a printer hummed, and a receptionist spoke quietly on the telephone.

Danielle led Mark toward a row of chairs beside a window.

She sat down but kept her handbag in her lap.

Mark remained standing.

“Start talking.””

Danielle looked through the window toward the parking lot.

“Eight years ago, Claire called me from the hospital. She was frightened. She kept asking whether I thought people could make mistakes that couldn't be corrected.””

“What kind of mistakes?””

“She wouldn't tell me at first.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew I would ask questions she wasn't ready to answer.””

Mark folded his arms.

“You're describing my wife.””

Danielle gave him a sad look.

“You don't know everything about your wife, Mark. Neither did I.””

“Don't turn this into a speech about how complicated she is.””

“I'm not. I'm telling you what happened.””

She took a breath.

“Eventually, Claire told me that something had gone wrong with the paperwork surrounding Lily's birth. She said two sets of information had appeared, and that someone at the hospital had told her not to worry about it.””

Mark felt his stomach tighten.

“Two sets of information about what?””

“Names. Dates. Details that were supposed to match.””

“Did they?””

“According to Claire, no.””

Mark stared at her.

“Did you see the records?””

“No. I saw the letter from Thomas years later.””

“Then how do you know Claire didn't misunderstand something?””

Danielle nodded slowly.

“That's a fair question. I don't know that she understood everything correctly. That's why I kept telling her to get the records verified.””

“Did she?””

“She said she tried.””

“When?””

“Several times over the years.””

Mark shook his head.

“She never mentioned any of this to me.””

“I know.””

“Did you tell her to keep it secret?””

“No.””

“Did you help her?””

Danielle hesitated.

“Yes.””

The admission struck him harder than he expected.

“How?””

“I listened. I helped her contact people. I went with her once to ask questions about the old records.””

Mark stared at her.

“You were investigating my daughter's birth without telling me?””

Danielle looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire begged me not to tell you until she understood what had happened.””

“And you agreed?””

“I thought I was giving her time to find the truth.””

Mark laughed bitterly.

“Eight years is a lot of time.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

His voice sharpened, and a nurse passing down the corridor glanced toward them.

Mark lowered his tone.

“You watched me raise Lily. You came to know things about our family that I didn't. And you let me believe everything was straightforward.””

Danielle's eyes glistened.

“I thought the truth would come out once Claire had answers.””

“But she never got them.””

“Not the ones she needed.””

Mark paced two steps, then stopped.

“Tell me about the second record.””

Danielle opened her handbag and took out a small notebook.

She flipped through several pages until she found an entry marked with an old date.

“Thomas told me there might have been a preliminary record and a final record. He believed the difference between them was important.””

“Why?””

“He thought the changes might have affected how the birth was documented.””

“Was he accusing someone of changing the records?””

“He was concerned that changes had been made without a clear explanation.””

Mark rubbed his forehead.

“That's not the same thing.””

“No. It isn't. And I'm not asking you to treat it as proof.””

For the first time, Mark heard something in Danielle's voice that sounded like honesty rather than accusation.

She was not claiming to know the answer.

She was admitting how little anyone knew.

“Where is Thomas now?”” he asked.

“I don't know. The last address I had was in the letter.””

“Then we'll start there.””

Danielle nodded.

“There's one more thing.””

Mark closed his eyes briefly.

“Of course there is.””

“When I spoke to Thomas, he said the second record might not have remained at the hospital. He thought a copy had been sent somewhere else.””

“Where?””

“He didn't tell me.””

“Why not?””

“He said he wasn't certain, and he didn't want to send me looking in the wrong place.””

Mark took the folded note from his pocket and studied the handwriting.

“Who wrote this?””

Danielle leaned closer.

“Claire did.””

Mark looked up.

“You said you wrote the original note.””

“I did. This is different.””

She pointed toward the bottom of the sheet.

“See the final sentence? The handwriting is Claire's.””

Mark examined it.

The letters were narrower, the lines more hurried.

The second record must remain hidden.

He read it again.

“Why would my wife write that?””

Danielle's face grew pale.

“I don't know.””

“Did you ask her?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

“That she wrote it during a moment when she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Danielle looked toward the examination-room door.

“That's the question I never got her to answer.””

Before Mark could respond, the door opened.

Claire stepped into the hallway.

Her eyes were red, and her hands were clasped tightly together.

“Lily is asking for you,” she said.

Mark immediately moved toward the room.

“Is she okay?””

“The nurse says she's stable, but she's frightened.””

He brushed past Claire and returned to his daughter.

Lily looked up the moment he entered.

“Daddy.””

“I'm here.””

He crouched beside the wheelchair, letting her take his hand.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

“Are you going to leave us?””

The question struck him so hard that he had to look away for a moment.

“No.””

She searched his face.

“Even if the papers say I'm not really yours?””

Mark knelt lower so they were eye to eye.

“Listen to me, Lily. I don't know what these papers mean yet. Neither does anyone else in this room. We're going to find out what is true, and we're going to do it properly.””

“But what if the truth is bad?””

“Then we'll face it together.””

She began to cry.

Mark pulled her gently into his arms, careful of her abdomen.

“You're my daughter,” he whispered.

“You're the little girl I carried home. You're the person who makes me laugh when I've had the worst day at work. You're the one who insists I sing the wrong lyrics to every song in the car.””

Lily gave a tiny, broken laugh.

“You do sing the wrong lyrics.””

“I know. It's a terrible gift.””

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“And you're still my daddy?””

“Always.””

Across the room, Claire covered her mouth.

Mark held Lily until her breathing steadied. Then he sat beside her while the nurse continued the assessment.

After a few minutes, the nurse asked whether Lily wanted some quiet time.

Lily nodded.

Mark stayed beside her, keeping the conversation low.

Claire remained near the doorway.

She had not moved closer.

When Lily finally looked toward her mother, Claire took a cautious step forward.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered, “I'm sorry.””

Lily didn't answer.

Claire swallowed.

“I should have told your father the truth when you found those papers.””

Lily's gaze dropped.

“Why didn't you?””

Claire looked at Mark.

He didn't rescue her.

For once, she would have to answer the question herself.

“Because I was afraid,” she said.

“Of Daddy?””

“No.”” Claire's voice broke.

“Of losing him.””

Lily thought about that for a moment.

“But you were making me scared.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The nurse gently reminded everyone that Lily needed rest and that the family could continue the discussion elsewhere.

Mark agreed.

He helped the nurse ensure Lily was comfortable, then stepped into the hallway with Claire and Danielle.

The documents were placed back into the transparent pouch, and Mark kept them with the letter.

He was not ready to trust anyone with them.

As they approached the reception area, his phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

Mark nearly ignored it.

Then a message arrived.

Mr. Bennett, my name is Thomas Reed. Danielle told me you found the papers.

Mark stopped walking.

Claire saw his face.

“What is it?””

He held up the phone.

Her knees seemed to weaken.

A second message appeared.

Do not contact the hospital yet. There is something you need to know about the original record.

Mark typed a reply.

Who are you, and what do you know?

The response came almost immediately.

I was the person who discovered the discrepancy eight years ago.

Mark's pulse quickened.

Then another message appeared.

But I wasn't the person who caused it.

He stared at the screen.

Claire had gone completely still beside him.

Mark turned toward her.

“Did you know he was going to contact me?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you know what he was going to say?””

“No.””

For the first time that day, she sounded as frightened as he felt.

Mark looked back at his phone.

A final message arrived.

If you want the truth about Lily's birth, you need to ask Claire what happened before she ever entered that hospital.

Mark slowly lowered the phone.

The clinic corridor seemed to grow colder around him.

He turned to his wife.

“What happened before Lily was born?””

Claire stared at him, tears streaming down her face.

Then she whispered something he had never expected to hear.

“Mark, before I met you, I made a promise to someone.””

He waited.

“And when Lily was born,” Claire continued, “I realized I might have broken it.””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small photograph.

The edges were worn, and the image had faded with age.

It showed a younger Claire standing beside a man Mark had never seen before.

On the back, someone had written a date.

Eight years and nine months before Lily's birth.

Below the date were four words.

We will tell him someday.

Mark looked from the photograph to his wife.

“Who is that man?””

Claire held the picture against her chest.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she looked directly into Mark's eyes.

May you like

“His name is Thomas Reed.””

And Mark understood that the mystery surrounding his daughter's birth had begun long before the day she was born.
