Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph

“His name is Thomas Reed.””

Claire's confession seemed to suck all the air out of the clinic corridor.

Mark stared at the faded photograph in her hands. The man standing beside his wife looked to be in his late twenties, with a narrow face, dark eyes, and a smile that suggested he had once believed the world would keep its promises.

Claire had been younger then. Her hair fell in natural curls around her shoulders, and she wore a white dress Mark had never seen before.

They stood close enough that their arms touched.

On the back, the handwriting remained unmistakable.

We will tell him someday.

Mark looked at the date again.

Eight years and nine months before Lily's birth.

He did the calculation automatically.

The photograph had been taken before he and Claire were married.

Before he had bought the little house outside Atlanta.

Before he had held Claire's hand in a hospital corridor and promised that they would build a family together.

“Were you involved with him?”” Mark asked.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

It was also devastating.

Mark stepped away from her.

“How long?””

“Before you and I met.””

“Did you love him?””

Claire looked at the photograph.

“I thought I did.””

Mark laughed once, without humor.

“You thought you did?””

“I was young, Mark. We were both young.””

“That's not what I'm asking.””

She gripped the photograph until its corners bent.

“Yes. I loved him.””

The answer left Mark staring at her as though he were meeting his wife for the first time.

He had known Claire had a life before him. Everyone did. But he had never imagined that a person from that life might still be connected to their daughter's existence in a way that could unravel everything they believed about their family.

“Why didn't you tell me about him?””

“Because it was over before I met you.””

“Then why does his name appear in documents about Lily's birth?””

Claire looked down.

“Because I never found out what happened to all the paperwork.””

“That doesn't make sense.””

“I know.””

“Did you know Thomas before Lily was conceived?””

Claire hesitated.

“Yes.””

Mark's stomach tightened.

“Were you still seeing him?””

“No.””

“Were you speaking to him?””

“Not at first.””

“Claire, I need more than fragments.””

She rubbed her forehead, struggling to steady her breathing.

“Thomas and I met when I was twenty-six. We were together for nearly two years. We talked about marriage.

We talked about children. We made plans that seemed permanent at the time.””

“And then?””

“Then we disagreed about something important.””

“What?””

Claire looked toward the clinic entrance.

“I wanted a family. He wanted to wait until he had established his career. We argued constantly. Eventually, I left.””

“Did he try to contact you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After I met you.””

Mark's face hardened.

“You told him you were getting married?””

“I told him I had moved on.””

“And he accepted that?””

“He said he did.””

Mark shook his head.

“Apparently, he didn't.””

Claire pressed the photograph to her chest.

“I didn't know he was involved in any of this until after Lily was born.””

“Then how did he end up connected to her hospital records?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you sleep with him after we started dating?””

“No.””

“After we got engaged?””

“No.””

“After we got married?””

Claire looked straight at him.

“No, Mark. I never cheated on you.””

He searched her face for the smallest sign of deception.

He wanted to believe her.

That was the most painful part.

Even after the hidden papers, the frightened child, and the revelations in the corridor, a part of him still wanted to reach for his wife's hand and hear her say that everything would be all right.

But he had spent the morning discovering how little reassurance was worth without evidence.

“Then why did Thomas tell me to ask what happened before you entered the hospital?”” he asked.

Claire's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.

“Because of my pregnancy.””

Mark frowned.

“What about it?””

Claire swallowed.

“When I was pregnant with Lily, Thomas contacted me.””

The corridor seemed to narrow around them.

“What did he want?””

“He said he had something important to tell me. I refused to see him at first. I told him my life had changed and that I was married.””

“But you eventually met him.””

Claire nodded.

“Once.””

“When?””

“About two months before Lily was born.””

Mark stared at her.

“You met your former boyfriend while you were pregnant with our daughter, and you never told me?””

“I was afraid you'd misunderstand.””

“How could I possibly misunderstand that?””

“He said he had information about my family. He claimed something had happened years earlier, something that involved my mother.””

Mark paused.

Claire's mother had died when Claire was a teenager. He knew little about her family history because Claire rarely discussed it.

“What did Thomas say?””

“He said my mother had kept a secret from me. He told me it was connected to a hospital record and that I needed to find out the truth before Lily was born.””

Mark looked at the photograph again.

“And you believed him?””

“I didn't know what to believe. I told him never to contact me again.””

“But he did.””

Claire nodded.

“He sent me a letter after Lily was born.””

Mark remembered the envelope.

The letter with his name on it.

The one Claire had hidden for eight years.

“Was that the letter I just read?””

“Yes.””

“Why was it addressed to me?””

“Because Thomas said you deserved to know.””

Mark felt anger rise in his chest.

“Then why didn't I?””

Claire's voice broke.

“Because the letter didn't tell the whole story. It raised questions I couldn't answer. I thought I could find the truth myself before involving you.””

“And instead, you kept it hidden.””

“Yes.””

Mark looked away.

Through the examination-room window, he could see Lily sitting quietly beside the nurse. Her small feet rested on the wheelchair supports, and her yellow cardigan seemed too bright against the muted clinic walls.

He had promised her that the adults would work through the mystery without making her responsible for it.

He intended to keep that promise.

“I'm going back inside,” he said.

Claire reached for him.

“Mark, please. I know I've made terrible mistakes.””

He looked at her hand.

“Did you ever find out what your mother had hidden?””

Claire slowly withdrew her fingers.

“No.””

“Then we're going to find out.””

He returned to the examination room.

Lily looked up immediately.

“Daddy?””

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“Are you still going to take me home?””

“Of course.””

She studied his face.

“Are you angry with Mom?””

Mark sat beside her.

“I'm upset about some things. But you don't need to fix them.””

Lily nodded.

Then she looked toward the door.

“Is the lady gone?””

“Not yet.””

“Can I tell you something?””

“Anything.””

She leaned closer and lowered her voice.

“When I found the papers, there was another picture inside the box.””

Mark felt his pulse quicken.

“What picture?””

“An old baby picture.””

“Of you?””

Lily shook her head.

“I don't think so.””

He kept his voice gentle.

“Why not?””

“Because the baby had a little mark on her shoulder. Like a tiny brown spot.””

Mark looked at Lily's shoulder, where the sleeve of her cardigan covered her skin.

“Did the baby look like you?””

“A little.””

“What happened to the picture?””

“Mom took it away.””

Mark's eyes moved toward the doorway.

“Did she say why?””

Lily nodded.

“She said I wasn't supposed to see it.””

Mark looked at the document pouch.

He had assumed the red-bordered packet contained the whole mystery.

Now he wondered what else Claire had kept hidden.

The nurse approached, carrying a small folder.

“Mr. Bennett, Lily's assessment is continuing, and we'll make sure you have the appropriate follow-up information. I also wanted to let you know that we shouldn't draw any medical conclusions from the family documents. Those questions need separate verification.””

“Understood,” Mark said.

The nurse looked at Lily.

“Would you like your dad to stay beside you while we finish up?””

“Yes, please.””

“Then that's what we'll do.””

Mark remained with his daughter while Claire waited in the hallway.

A few minutes later, his phone vibrated.

A new message from Thomas appeared.

I need to tell you something about the photograph.

Mark typed back.

What photograph?

The response came immediately.

The one Claire has kept since before you married her.

Mark glanced toward the doorway.

He had not sent Thomas the photograph.

He hadn't even told him that Claire had shown it to him.

Mark typed another message.

How do you know she still has it?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Finally, Thomas replied.

Because I gave it to her.

Mark's fingers tightened around the phone.

A second message followed.

There were two photographs. One of Claire and me. The other was taken at the hospital years before Lily was born.

Mark stared at the screen.

He thought of Lily's description of the baby photograph.

A tiny brown mark on the shoulder.

Another message arrived.

If she still has the second picture, ask her to look at the back.

Mark stood so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.

Lily looked up in alarm.

“Daddy?””

He immediately knelt beside her.

“It's okay, sweetheart. I just need to ask Mom something.””

He stepped into the hallway.

Claire was standing near the window, holding the old photograph.

“Where is the other picture?”” he asked.

Her face drained of color.

“What other picture?””

“The baby photograph Lily found.””

Claire stared at him.

“Who told you about that?””

“Lily.””

“Mark, she doesn't understand what she saw.””

“Then help me understand.””

Claire clutched the photograph.

For several seconds, she seemed to weigh whether to keep lying.

Finally, she reached into her handbag and removed a small, faded photograph of a newborn wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

Mark took it carefully.

On the front, a handwritten date appeared beneath the baby's image.

The date was eight years earlier than Lily's birth.

He turned it over.

Two names were written on the back.

One was Claire's mother's.

The other was a name Mark had never seen before.

Beneath them was a short sentence.

If anything happens, the truth belongs to both families.

Mark looked up.

“Claire, whose baby is this?””

His wife began to cry.

“I don't know.””

He held the photograph between them.

“Then why have you kept it for eight years?””

Claire stared at the image.

May you like

And for the first time, she gave him an answer that sounded more frightening than any confession.

“Because, Mark, I think the baby in that photograph was the reason my mother died.””
