Chapter 4: Behind the Wall

Richard had heard gunshots in boardrooms and threats in courtrooms.

He had faced men twice his size without blinking.

But nothing prepared him for three knocks coming from behind a basement wall.

Mark backed away.

Claudia grabbed his arm.

“Don’t go down there.””

Richard looked at her.

“Why?””

She said nothing.

Richard handed Noah to Mrs. Alvarez.

“Take him upstairs.””

Noah clung to Richard’s sleeve.

“Don’t leave me.””

Richard looked directly into the child’s eyes.

“I won't.””

Then he turned to Mark.

“Open the basement door.””

Mark shook his head.

“Dad—”

“Open it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Mark stared toward the floor.

Richard's voice hardened.

“Why can't you open a door in your own house?””

Claudia stepped between them.

“Richard, this has gone too far.””

He moved past her.

“No. It went too far long before tonight.””

He opened the basement door himself.

Cold air rushed upward.

The staircase descended into darkness.

Richard reached for the light switch.

Nothing.

He pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight.

The beam shook slightly.

Not from fear.

From anger.

Mark followed reluctantly.

Claudia remained at the top.

“Richard,” she called, “please.””

He didn't turn.

The basement smelled of concrete, dust, and something metallic.

At the bottom were storage shelves.

Boxes.

Old furniture.

Christmas decorations.

A furnace hummed in the corner.

Richard looked around.

“Where?””

Mark said nothing.

Richard turned.

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I've never seen anyone down here.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Then why are you afraid?””

Mark looked away.

Richard's eyes scanned the walls.

Nothing.

Then he heard it.

A faint scraping sound.

Behind the far wall.

He walked toward it.

Mark grabbed his wrist.

“Dad.””

Richard looked down at the hand.

“Take it off.””

Mark released him.

Richard tapped the wall.

Solid.

He tapped again.

A hollow echo answered.

He looked at Mark.

Mark stepped backward.

“Don't.””

Richard's face hardened.

He struck the wall with his palm.

Hollow.

He found a seam.

A concealed door.

The handle had been painted to match the concrete.

Richard pulled.

The door opened.

A narrow room lay behind it.

There was a cot.

A lamp.

A blanket.

A plastic pitcher of water.

And a woman sitting against the wall.

She looked thin.

Pale.

Exhausted.

For several seconds, Richard couldn't breathe.

Then the woman lifted her head.

She looked exactly like Noah.

Same eyes.

Same dark hair.

Same small dimple in the left cheek.

“Richard?””

His mind searched through old memories.

Photographs.

Family gatherings.

A name.

He whispered it.

“Emily.””

The woman began to cry.

Mark stumbled backward.

Claudia appeared at the doorway.

Her face collapsed.

Emily looked at Richard.

“I tried to tell you.””

Richard stared at his son.

“What did you do?””

Mark shook his head.

“Dad, I can explain.””

Richard turned toward Emily.

“How long?””

Emily looked at Mark.

“Almost eleven months.””

Richard's stomach dropped.

“Eleven months?””

Emily nodded.

“After Noah was born, Mark said we needed privacy.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Then Claudia started coming around.””

Claudia whispered, “That's not—”

Emily continued.

“She told Mark I was unstable.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“She took my phone.””

Emily pointed to the corner.

“My identification. My bank cards. Everything.””

Richard looked at Mark.

“You kept your own child's mother locked in a room?””

Mark's voice broke.

“She threatened to take Noah.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“I was his mother. Of course I wanted my son.””

Mark stepped closer.

“You were sick.””

“I was trapped.””

“You couldn't take care of him.””

“I was nursing him.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Nursing him?””

Emily nodded.

“For six months.””

Richard looked toward the corridor.

“Then why was Noah living alone upstairs?””

Emily covered her mouth.

A sob escaped.

“Because Claudia wanted him to forget me.””

Richard felt the world go silent.

“You've been separated from your son for eleven months?””

Emily nodded.

“Every night I heard him crying.””

She pointed at the wall.

“They moved his room farther away because he kept asking for me.””

Richard looked at Mark.

His son was no longer looking angry.

He looked defeated.

Richard spoke slowly.

“Why?””

Mark lowered his eyes.

“Claudia said if Emily came back, she'd ruin everything.””

“What everything?””

Mark didn't answer.

Richard stepped toward him.

“Money?””

Silence.

“Trust?””

Silence.

“Control?””

Mark finally whispered:

“She knew about the accounts.””

Emily looked at Richard.

“Because I found them.””

Richard's expression changed.

“What accounts?””

Emily took a breath.

“Your accounts.””

The basement seemed to get colder.

“What did you find?””

“Payments,” Emily said.

“Transfers. Shell companies. Money moved from the Bellacorte trust into accounts Mark controlled.””

Mark snapped.

“Enough!””

Richard turned.

“Keep your voice down.””

Mark’s hands shook.

Emily looked at Richard.

“I found one account tied to your name.””

Richard stared at her.

“What was in it?””

Emily swallowed.

“Two million dollars.””

Claudia suddenly shouted:

“You don't understand!””

Richard turned.

“Then explain.””

Her eyes filled with panic.

The performance was gone.

The polished smile.

The perfect posture.

All of it.

She pointed at the floor.

“The money isn't the worst part.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What is?””

Claudia looked at Noah upstairs.

Then at Emily.

Then back at Richard.

“The money was only the beginning.””

Richard's chest tightened.

“What beginning?””

Claudia whispered:

“Someone else has been paying Mark.””

The words landed like a gunshot.

Richard stared at his son.

“Who?””

Mark closed his eyes.

Claudia looked toward the basement stairs.

And in a trembling voice, she gave a name Richard had not heard in twenty years.

“Elias.””

May you like

Richard's face went completely still.

His older brother had been dead for nineteen years.
