Chapter 6: The Recording
“Grandpa… Elias told me not to tell Daddy.””
The words hung over the basement like smoke.
Richard stared at Noah.
The little boy stood at the top of the stairs with Richard’s overcoat wrapped around him, its sleeves dragging almost to his ankles.
Daniel Royce slowly closed the folder in his hands.
Mark looked as though someone had struck him.
Claudia whispered, “Noah, come here.””
The child immediately backed away.
Richard stepped toward him.
“Stay with Grandpa.””
Noah nodded.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“He told him?””
Richard nodded.
Daniel’s face tightened.
“When?””
Noah answered before Richard could.
“Before the mountain.””
Everyone went still.
Richard knelt.
“What mountain, sweetheart?””
Noah looked toward the tall basement windows.
“The one with the big trees.””
Mark whispered, “He means nothing.””
Richard turned sharply.
“You don't get to translate him anymore.””
Daniel crouched a few steps below Noah.
“Noah, do you remember a man named Elias?””
The child nodded.
“He had a red scarf.””
Richard closed his eyes for a moment.
His brother always wore a red wool scarf in winter.
“What did Elias tell you?””
Noah rubbed his eyes.
“He said grown-ups lie.””
Richard felt something tighten inside his chest.
Daniel asked gently, “Anything else?””
Noah looked at the wooden airplane.
“He said the plane remembers.””
Mark suddenly lunged.
Richard caught him by the shoulder.
“Don't.””
“Dad, give me the plane.””
“No.””
“You don't understand!””
“I understand enough.””
Mark struggled against him.
“That thing will destroy everything!””
Richard shoved him back.
“It already did.””
Claudia screamed, “Stop!””
Daniel moved between them.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Calm down? My grandson was locked in a freezing room while his mother was hidden behind a wall.””
Daniel looked at Mark.
“Is that true?””
Mark said nothing.
Daniel turned to Claudia.
“Is it?””
She looked away.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Then we're past the point where family arguments matter.””
He took a small digital recorder from his briefcase.
Richard frowned.
“What is that?””
“Something Elias left behind.””
Mark went completely pale.
“No.””
Daniel pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a familiar voice came through the speaker.
Richard froze.
His brother.
Older than the last recording Richard remembered, but unmistakable.
“Rich.””
Richard’s hand went to his mouth.
The recording continued.
“If you're hearing this, you're probably angry.””
A faint laugh.
“I know you.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Elias…”
The recording crackled.
“I couldn't tell you everything while I was alive. There were people watching me. People I thought were loyal to the family.””
Richard looked slowly at Mark.
The voice continued.
“Mark has access to the trust accounts, but he isn't the one running them.””
Mark shook his head.
“Dad, listen—”
Richard raised one finger.
Silence.
“Claudia knows where the records are.””
Claudia began to cry.
The recording continued.
“And someone outside the family has been moving money through companies I don't recognize.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
Richard felt his heart pounding.
Then Elias said something that changed the room.
“The money isn't the secret.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard whispered, “What is?””
On the recording, Elias answered.
“Noah is.””
Static.
Then silence.
Daniel stopped the recording.
Richard stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Elias expected someone to come after Noah.””
Mark shook his head.
“You're making it sound like some conspiracy.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“It is.””
Mark swallowed.
Daniel opened another file.
“Elias created a protective trust for Noah eighteen months before he died.””
Richard stared.
“Why so early?””
“Because he had already discovered financial manipulation within the Bellacorte holdings.””
Mark said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“He also hired a private investigator.””
Claudia whispered, “That man was obsessed.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“He was afraid.””
Daniel handed Richard a photograph.
A mountain road.
A black SUV.
A familiar license plate.
Richard recognized the vehicle.
His son had driven it for years.
He looked at Mark.
“When was this taken?””
Daniel answered.
“Two weeks before Elias died.””
Richard held up the picture.
“That's your car.””
Mark stared at it.
“That proves nothing.””
Daniel took out another photograph.
Then another.
The same SUV.
Different locations.
A gas station.
An airport.
A private clinic.
And finally—
a hospital parking lot.
Richard’s voice went quiet.
“You followed him.””
Mark looked toward Claudia.
“I was protecting the family.””
“From my brother?””
“He was going to expose us.””
Richard stepped closer.
“You stole from me.””
Mark shook his head.
“I borrowed.””
“Thirty-eight million dollars?””
“I was going to put it back.””
Daniel laughed once.
“You know that's not what the records show.””
Richard looked at Mark.
“What did you spend it on?””
Mark’s silence was answer enough.
Claudia finally spoke.
“Properties.””
Richard turned.
“Whose?””
She looked down.
“Mine.””
The air seemed to leave the room.
Mark closed his eyes.
Richard stared at Claudia.
“You bought property with money meant for Noah?””
She nodded.
“How much?””
“About twelve million.””
Richard felt his jaw lock.
“And the rest?””
Claudia said nothing.
Daniel opened a ledger.
“Most of the remaining funds were transferred into an offshore account.””
Richard looked at Mark.
“Whose account?””
Mark whispered:
“No one's.””
Daniel corrected him.
“It belongs to a company.””
“What company?””
Daniel looked down at the paperwork.
Then back up.
“Bellacorte Aviation Holdings.””
Richard frowned.
His family owned aircraft.
He knew every major company.
“That company doesn't exist.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“It didn't.””
Richard understood.
“Someone created it after Elias died.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“It was created three days before he died.””
Richard looked down at the wooden airplane.
Its crooked wings suddenly seemed less childish.
More like a key.
He crouched in front of Noah.
“Noah, Elias gave you this plane?””
The boy nodded.
“Did he put something inside?””
Noah shook his head.
“He said I should give it to Grandpa.””
Richard turned the airplane over.
“Why would he say that?””
Noah looked at the floor.
“Because Grandpa knows planes.””
Richard stared at him.
“What else did he say?””
The child thought.
Then his eyes widened.
“He said…”
Noah reached into the oversized pocket of Richard’s coat.
“He said the loud airplane knows where the little airplane sleeps.””
Daniel went still.
Richard looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel slowly whispered:
“Elias’s private jet.””
Richard stood.
The private jet had been sold after Elias’s death.
Or so he had been told.
He suddenly remembered something.
The buyer had been anonymous.
Richard had never seen the final paperwork.
He turned toward Daniel.
“Where is that aircraft now?””
Daniel opened his laptop.
“I don't know.””
Richard looked at him.
“Find it.””
Daniel began typing.
Behind them, Mark whispered something to Claudia.
Richard heard it.
“Warehouse.””
He turned.
“What warehouse?””
Mark froze.
Richard crossed the room.
“What warehouse?””
Mark's eyes filled with fear.
“You don't want to know.””
Richard stopped inches from him.
“Try me.””
Mark whispered:
“The old Bellacorte hangar.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s face had gone pale.
“That facility was closed nineteen years ago.””
Mark shook his head.
“It wasn't.””
Richard’s voice dropped.
“Then what has been happening there?””
Mark looked at the wooden airplane.
“Everything.””
And before Richard could ask what that meant, every light in the basement went out.
In the darkness, a phone began ringing.
Not Richard's.
Not Daniel's.
Mark slowly reached into his pocket.
The screen lit his face.
May you like
One name appeared.
ELIAS.
