Chapter 6: The Man Who Kept the Secret
Nobody moved.
Not even Charles.
The man who had spent the entire night standing quietly in the background.
The man who opened the door for me.
The man who looked like the only person in the room who wasn’t hiding something.
Now his name was glowing on the screen like an accusation.
*CHARLES BENNETT.*
I stared at him.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Charles looked at me.
His expression wasn’t angry.
It wasn’t defensive.
It was exhausted.
Like he had known this moment would eventually come.
Margaret stood slowly.
“Charles.””
Her voice shook.
“Tell me this isn’t true.””
Charles looked at the floor.
That was all it took.
My stomach dropped.
“Are you serious?””
Daniel moved between us.
“Stay away from him.””
Charles looked up.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Not anymore.””
I looked at Charles.
“You knew my mother?””
He didn’t answer.
“You knew my father?””
Silence.
“You knew about me?””
His eyes met mine.
“Yes.””
The room felt like it tilted.
I stepped back.
“How long?””
Charles swallowed.
“Since before you were born.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“I trusted you.””
Charles closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“You worked for this family for forty years.””
“Yes.””
“You watched my son disappear.””
His face tightened.
“I tried to stop it.””
Daniel laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“You tried?””
Charles looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You were there that night.””
The words landed heavily.
I looked between them.
“What night?””
Nobody answered.
I raised my voice.
“What night?””
Daniel turned toward me.
“The night I disappeared.””
I looked at Charles.
“You were there?””
Charles slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“And you never told anyone?””
“I couldn’t.””
Margaret’s voice broke.
“Why?””
Charles looked at her.
“Because I was afraid.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Not even me.
The man who seemed so controlled.
So calm.
Was afraid.
“Afraid of who?”” I asked.
Charles looked toward the ceiling.
Then back at me.
“Edward.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Charles looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Edward wasn’t the most dangerous person in that house.””
Silence.
I felt a chill move through me.
“Then who was?””
Charles looked at the computer screen.
At the message.
At my mother’s warning.
Then he said:
“Your grandfather.””
I frowned.
“Edward was my grandfather.””
Charles nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then what are you saying?””
He took a slow breath.
“I’m saying Edward wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Charles looked at him.
“It isn’t.””
He walked toward the desk and touched the old files.
“Edward had power. Money. Influence.””
His voice lowered.
“But someone else had access.””
“To what?””
Charles looked at me.
“To everyone’s secrets.””
The room went quiet.
I thought about the message.
*The person who destroyed our family was someone we trusted.*
Not Edward.
Someone close.
Someone inside.
I looked at Charles.
“You were my mother’s friend.””
Charles nodded.
“I was.””
“What does that mean?””
His eyes became sad.
“Laura trusted me.””
“And you betrayed her.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
Charles accepted them.
“Yes.””
Margaret looked at him.
“Why?””
Charles didn’t answer immediately.
Then he reached into his pocket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a small silver key.
He placed it on the table.
“I kept this for twenty-seven years.””
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
“The key to the last place Laura hid evidence.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother hid something?””
Charles nodded.
“She knew someone would eventually find the files here.””
He looked at me.
“She wanted you to have the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
His expression broke.
“Because I was the reason she hid it.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Charles looked at Margaret.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
“Twenty-seven years ago, Laura came to me.””
He paused.
“She was terrified.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone close to her was helping Edward.””
My heart pounded.
“And she thought it was you?””
Charles nodded.
“She was right.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel moved forward.
“You helped Edward?””
Charles looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer hit like a punch.
Margaret whispered:
“Charles…”
“I gave Edward information.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You told him where we were.””
Charles closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
A horrible silence followed.
I looked at Charles.
“You helped them find my mother?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I believed Edward only wanted the documents.””
Daniel stared.
“And when he came after us?””
Charles looked away.
“I realized too late.””
The room felt heavier.
“Then why are you still here?”” I asked.
Charles looked at me.
“Because after that night, I spent twenty-seven years trying to fix what I broke.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to fix something you destroyed.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Again.
That word.
I know.
Everyone in this house knew.
Everyone regretted.
Everyone had explanations.
But I was the one who had to live with the damage.
Daniel picked up the key.
“Where does this lead?””
Charles hesitated.
Then answered.
“Your mother’s old house.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Daniel looked at him.
“That house was demolished.””
Charles shook his head.
“Not completely.””
“What are you talking about?””
“There was a basement.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“A basement?””
Charles nodded.
“Laura built a hidden room beneath the house.””
Margaret frowned.
“I never knew.””
“Because she didn’t tell anyone.””
Charles looked at me.
“Except Evelyn.””
I froze.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“She left instructions.””
“For me?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Charles reached into another pocket.
He removed an envelope.
My name was written across the front.
Again.
My hands went cold.
Another letter.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that had existed without me knowing.
I didn’t take it immediately.
“Why now?””
Charles looked toward the ceiling.
“Because Edward knows where you are.””
The room went still.
“What?””
Charles pointed toward the broken window upstairs.
“That wasn’t a warning.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then what was it?””
Charles answered quietly.
“A countdown.””
Nobody spoke.
A sound came from above.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Everyone looked up.
Daniel immediately reached for the old security panel.
“The house is locked.””
Charles shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Charles’s face had lost all color.
“He knows the house.””
Margaret whispered:
“How?””
Charles looked at her.
Then at me.
“Because he built it.””
A shadow moved across the small window in the basement door.
Someone was standing outside.
My breath stopped.
Daniel moved in front of me.
“Whoever you are, show yourself.””
For a moment, there was nothing.
Then a voice came through the speaker system.
A voice that wasn’t Edward’s.
A voice younger.
Calmer.
Almost familiar.
“Charles.””
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You really should have learned by now.””
Charles stepped back.
“No.””
The speaker crackled.
“You always did have a weakness for guilty people.””
I looked at Charles.
Then at the speaker.
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
The voice continued.
“Evelyn Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
“I’ve waited a long time to meet you.””
Daniel grabbed the microphone.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person your mother trusted.””
My heart stopped.
The voice became softer.
“The person who held you the night you were born.””
Nobody moved.
Because everyone understood at the same time.
The person speaking wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone from my past.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Then the voice said the words that shattered the last piece of my certainty.
“Evelyn…”
May you like
A pause.
“Your mother never told you the truth about who your father really was.””
