Chapter 9: The Secret Margaret Buried
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The name on the paper seemed to burn into the screen.
*Edward Whitmore.*
My grandfather.
The man everyone blamed.
The man everyone feared.
The man who had supposedly destroyed the Whitmore family.
But Margaret’s reaction told me something else.
She wasn’t afraid of the name.
She was afraid of what it meant.
I looked at her.
“Your husband wrote the message?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
“Margaret.””
Her eyes remained fixed on the monitor.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not an answer.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The words sounded exhausted.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
Just tired.
Like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mother.””
Margaret looked at him.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
His face hardened.
“You knew?””
She didn’t respond.
That was the answer.
Daniel looked away.
Another betrayal.
Another secret.
I watched him carefully.
For the first time, I understood something.
Daniel wasn’t just angry because his mother hid the truth from me.
He was angry because she had hidden it from him too.
“What did Edward write?”” I asked.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Henry through the camera.
“Read it.””
Henry hesitated.
Then he held the paper closer.
“The handwriting is old.””
He looked at Margaret.
“Are you sure?””
Margaret nodded.
“Read it.””
Henry took a breath.
Then began.
“Margaret.””
The single word made her face change.
“By the time you read this, you will already know what I did.””
The room went silent.
“Edward wrote this after everything happened?””
Henry nodded.
The message continued.
“I spent my life believing power was the only way to protect this family.””
Henry paused.
“Then I learned power was the reason I destroyed it.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was listening carefully.
“Edward says he knew about James.””
Henry continued.
“He knew James had discovered the truth.””
My fingers curled.
“The company.””
“Yes,” Henry said.
“The illegal dealings. The hidden accounts. The people who were paid to disappear.””
I looked at Margaret.
“But why write this to you?””
Henry looked back at the page.
“Because he says you were the only person he trusted.””
Nobody expected that.
Especially Margaret.
She almost laughed.
A painful sound.
“He trusted me?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why wouldn’t he?””
Margaret stared at the floor.
“Because I was the one who betrayed him.””
The room froze.
“What?””
She looked up.
“I gave Edward the information.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
My heart pounded.
“Information about what?””
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“About James.””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“You told him where James was.””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“I didn’t know what he would do.””
Nobody spoke.
“I thought Edward wanted to talk to him.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You knew what Edward was capable of.””
Margaret looked at him.
“I was his wife.””
The pain in her voice was impossible to ignore.
“I spent thirty years believing I knew him.””
She looked at me.
“I believed I was protecting my family.””
I swallowed.
“And you weren’t.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I wasn’t.””
The honesty was almost worse.
Because I wanted someone to be completely evil.
I wanted someone to blame.
But everyone here was a mixture of love, fear, and terrible choices.
That made everything harder.
Henry continued reading.
“Edward wrote that Margaret did not know the full plan.””
I looked up.
“What plan?””
Henry’s expression changed.
“He says he was not the person who ordered James’s disappearance.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Henry continued.
“He says he discovered the truth too late.””
Margaret looked confused.
“Then who did?””
Nobody answered.
Henry looked at the bottom of the page.
“There is another note.””
He unfolded the corner.
My heart started racing.
“What does it say?””
Henry read slowly.
“Edward wrote: ‘The person who destroyed this family was someone who had access to everything. Someone who knew every secret before it happened.’”
Charles went pale.
Everyone noticed.
I turned toward him.
“Charles.””
He looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Why do you look like you know something?””
Charles didn’t answer.
Daniel moved toward him.
“Charles.””
The older man closed his eyes.
“I knew.””
The words landed heavily.
“Knew what?””
Charles looked at me.
“I knew Edward wasn’t the only one involved.””
“Who else?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Laura.””
My entire body froze.
“No.””
Charles shook his head.
“Not like you think.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at the floor.
“Your mother discovered the truth before anyone.””
Daniel stared.
“My mother?””
Charles nodded.
“She found out someone inside the family was manipulating everything.””
“Who?””
Charles looked at Margaret.
Then at me.
“She never told me.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid I would tell the wrong person.””
The room became silent.
I thought about the message.
*The person your mother trusted.*
Not the person she loved.
The person she trusted.
“Then why was she hiding everything from me?””
Charles looked at the monitor.
“Because she wanted you to have a normal life.””
I almost smiled.
Normal.
A word that no longer meant anything.
Henry’s voice came through the speakers.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at the screen.
He held up another piece of paper.
“This was inside the music box too.””
“What?””
Henry unfolded it.
“This one is from your father.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
He nodded.
“James.””
I stepped closer to the monitor.
“Read it.””
Henry looked down.
“Evelyn.””
My eyes filled.
Even his handwriting felt familiar.
“I don’t know if you will ever hear this.””
Henry continued.
“But if you do, I need you to understand one thing.””
A pause.
“Everyone will tell you this family was destroyed by greed.””
Henry looked up.
“But that isn’t the truth.””
My heartbeat increased.
“The truth is this family was destroyed by fear.””
Nobody moved.
James’s words continued.
“Your mother, Daniel, Margaret, Charles, even Edward… everyone made choices because they were afraid of losing something.””
I looked around the room.
It was true.
Everyone had been trying to protect something.
A family.
A reputation.
A child.
A secret.
“Then James writes something else,” Henry said.
“What?””
Henry looked at me.
“He says the person you should fear is not Edward.””
The room went cold.
“He says the person who controlled Edward was someone else.””
Daniel whispered:
“Who?””
Henry turned the page.
The ink was faded.
But the name was clear.
A name I had heard before.
A name that made Charles sit down.
A name that made Margaret start crying.
A name that made Daniel whisper:
“No.””
I stared at the paper.
*Thomas Whitmore.*
I looked toward the speaker.
“Thomas.””
The voice answered.
“Yes.””
My blood ran cold.
“You lied to us.””
A long silence.
Then Thomas said:
“I did.””
Daniel stepped closer to the microphone.
“Why?””
Thomas’s voice changed.
For the first time, he sounded broken.
“Because I was trying to protect her.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Me?””
“Yes, Evelyn.””
I felt a chill.
“How?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“Because Edward was never the greatest danger.””
A pause.
“Neither was I.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
The speaker went silent.
Then the answer came.
Softly.
Painfully.
“The person standing in that room with you.””
Everyone froze.
My eyes moved slowly.
One person.
Then another.
Until they stopped.
On Charles.
The man who had helped us.
The man who had confessed.
The man who had claimed he was trying to fix his mistakes.
Charles looked at me.
And I saw it.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Because he knew exactly what Thomas meant.
Daniel whispered:
“Charles?””
Charles didn’t answer.
Margaret stood.
“Charles…”
The older man closed his eyes.
Then he said the words nobody expected.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart dropped.
“Sorry for what?””
He looked at me.
And tears filled his eyes.
“For not telling you the truth sooner.””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I wasn’t just the man who helped destroy your family.””
The room went silent.
Charles’s voice shook.
“I was the man who raised your father.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He took a breath.
“And I was there the night James died.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Charles whispered the sentence that changed everything.
“But I wasn’t the one who killed him.””
His eyes met mine.
“I was the one who buried the evidence.””
The basement lights suddenly flickered.
The security monitor went black.
May you like
And somewhere above us…
A door opened.
