Chapter 3: The Letter My Father Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

The letter sat on my desk for hours.

I looked at it.

Touched it.

Put it down.

Picked it back up.

It felt impossible that my father’s handwriting was still alive after all these years.

Finally, just before sunrise, I opened it.

My father’s words filled the quiet room.

“Son,

If you are reading this, you have become the man I always knew you could be.

But there is something you deserve to know.

The story you were told about me was incomplete.””

I stopped reading.

My entire childhood, I believed my father had simply died because life was unfair.

A car accident.

A tragic night.

A painful memory everyone avoided discussing.

But according to the letter, there was more.

My father had been investigating corruption involving a defense contractor.

He had discovered illegal actions that put sailors at risk.

He tried to expose it.

And someone tried to stop him.

The letter continued.

“Marcus knows the truth. I asked him to protect you because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

I looked up.

Marcus.

The man everyone underestimated.

The man Tyler thought didn’t belong.

The man who had quietly carried my father’s secret for decades.

I called him immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“You read it.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

There was silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus sighed.

“Because your father made me promise.””

“He was my father.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“But he was also my friend.””

I closed my eyes.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus was quiet for a long time.

Then he said:

“Your father wasn’t supposed to die.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“What?””

“There were people who wanted him silent.””

I stood from my chair.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me more than the answer.

“Someone connected to the Navy.””

I felt anger rising.

My entire career had been built on honoring the institution my father loved.

Now I was hearing that someone inside it might have destroyed him.

“Why come now?”” I asked.

“Because you are finally in a position to uncover the truth.””

I looked at the letter.

“What else do you know?””

“I know your father kept evidence.””

“Where?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“There’s one more thing you need to understand.””

“What?””

“The person who caused your father’s death…”

He stopped.

“Marcus?””

His voice became barely a whisper.

“He’s still serving.””

The next morning, I reported for duty.

Everything looked normal.

The same halls.

The same uniforms.

The same flags.

But I saw everything differently.

During a briefing, I noticed a name on a personnel document.

A name I had never expected to see.

Commander Richard Vale.

My father’s former commanding officer.

The same man who had given my father his final assignment.

I stared at the paper.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

“Do not confront him yet.””

May you like

A second message appeared.

“Because he already knows you have the letter.””
