Chapter 8: The Secret My Father Took To His Grave
The document was only one page.
But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
A birth certificate.
A hospital record.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note from my father.
I read the words slowly.
“Some truths hurt because they arrive too late.””
I couldn’t move.
The child in the photograph wasn’t me.
It was another boy.
A baby.
My father’s handwriting continued.
“His name is Michael.””
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
That frightened me.
Because Marcus always had answers.
“What is this?””
He finally whispered:
“Your brother.””
The room went completely silent.
My entire life had been built around one story.
I was an only child.
My mother and father had one son.
Me.
But there was another child.
Another secret.
Another person my father protected.
“Where is he?””
Marcus looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“How can you not know?””
“Because your father hid him.””
“From who?””
Marcus looked at the document.
“From the same people who wanted him dead.””
I spent the next hour reading every piece of information.
Michael was born six years before me.
My father discovered corruption connected to illegal adoption records and military families.
He found children being used as leverage.
When he tried to expose it, people threatened his family.
So he made a decision.
He separated us.
Me with my mother.
Michael somewhere safe.
I hated that I understood.
And I hated that I didn’t.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Because he wanted you to have a normal life.””
I laughed quietly.
“Normal?””
I pointed at the evidence.
“Nothing about this is normal.””
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“But it was safer.””
The investigation continued.
Commander Vale was arrested.
Captain Cross cooperated.
The truth about the corruption began spreading.
But Michael remained missing.
Then three days later, I received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“I know who you are.””
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
“I know who our father was.””
My heart stopped.
I replied immediately.
“Who are you?””
The answer came seconds later.
“My name is Michael.””
I sat frozen.
My brother was alive.
I called.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then a final message arrived.
“Meet me alone.””
Marcus immediately told me not to go.
“It could be a trap.””
“It could be him.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“And that is exactly what makes you vulnerable.””
I understood.
But I also knew something else.
For years, I had wondered why my father left me.
Now I finally had a chance to understand.
I went.
The meeting place was an abandoned naval museum outside the city.
Rain fell heavily.
The old building smelled like rust and dust.
I walked inside.
“Michael?””
A voice answered from the darkness.
“You look just like him.””
A man stepped forward.
Older than me.
But the resemblance was undeniable.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same expression my father had in old photographs.
My brother.
He looked at my uniform.
“You became what he wanted.””
I swallowed.
“And you?””
Michael laughed softly.
“I became what he was afraid of.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“Your father didn’t tell you everything.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What else?””
Michael pulled out a folder.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
Then he said:
“Your father didn’t die trying to expose corruption.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did he die?””
Michael handed me the final document.
“Because he found out who was really in charge.””
I opened it.
And saw a name.
A name that made me forget how to breathe.
