Chapter 4: The Money His Mother Paid
Andre stared at the bank transfer receipt until the numbers blurred.
The payment had been made three years earlier, on a Thursday afternoon, from an account belonging to his mother, Lorraine Mitchell. The recipient was Richard Bell's law firm. The amount was $18,500.
The reference line read: *PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER — FINAL PAYMENT.*
Andre read it again.
His mother had attended the wedding that morning. She had sat in the second row wearing a navy-blue dress and the pearl earrings his father had given her decades ago. She had cried when Andre promised to love Vanessa, and afterward, she had hugged Zoe so tightly that the little girl had giggled.
Lorraine had been the person Andre called when Zoe developed her first fever. She had taught him how to braid his daughter's hair without pulling too tightly, and she had spent countless weekends helping him care for the little girl.
If someone had asked Andre to name the person he trusted most in the world, his mother would have been near the top of the list.
Now her name was on a payment connected to a forged custody petition.
He called her.
She answered on the second ring.
“Baby, are you all right?”” Lorraine asked.
“I've been trying to reach you. What happened at that wedding was absolutely disgraceful.””
Andre closed his eyes.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.””
“Of course. Is Zoe with you?””
“Yes.””
“Good. Keep her with you tonight. Vanessa has a lot of explaining to do.””
Andre looked at the receipt on the table.
“Did you pay Richard Bell eighteen thousand five hundred dollars three years ago?””
The silence was immediate.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Silence.
“Where did you hear that name?”” Lorraine finally asked.
“So you did pay him.””
“Andre, I can explain.””
“That's what Vanessa said.””
His mother exhaled sharply.
“Please don't compare me to that woman.””
“Then tell me what the money was for.””
“I can't discuss this over the phone.””
“Why not?””
“Because there are things you don't understand.””
Andre rose from his chair.
“Then help me understand.””
“Come to my house tomorrow morning. Alone.””
“No. I'm not coming alone, and I'm not waiting until tomorrow. You can talk to me now.””
“Your daughter is listening, isn't she?””
He glanced toward the hallway.
Zoe was asleep upstairs.
“No.””
“Good. Then listen carefully. I did what I thought was necessary to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
Lorraine's voice broke slightly.
“From making a terrible mistake.””
Andre gripped the edge of the table.
“What mistake?””
“Marrying a woman who could destroy your life.””
“You paid a lawyer to forge my signature?””
“I never said that.””
“You didn't have to.””
“Andre, please. I never wanted you hurt.””
“Then why did you hide this from me?””
His mother began to cry.
Andre had heard her cry only a handful of times in his adult life. When his father died. When Zoe was hospitalized with pneumonia. When Andre received a promotion she had prayed for him to get.
He had always gone to her.
This time, he remained standing on the other side of the room.
“Tell me the truth, Mom.””
“I will,” she whispered.
“But not like this.””
“Then when?””
“Tomorrow morning.””
Andre ended the call before she could say anything else.
He stood motionless for several seconds, listening to the refrigerator hum and the faint ticking of the clock above the kitchen doorway.
Then he heard footsteps on the stairs.
Zoe appeared at the bottom, holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?””
He quickly turned the phone facedown.
“Hey, sweetheart. What's wrong?””
“Can I sleep in your room tonight?””
“Of course.””
She walked toward him in her star-patterned pajamas.
“Is Grandma mad at you?””
Andre knelt.
“No, baby. Grandma and I have something to talk about.””
“Did she do something wrong?””
He took a breath.
“I'm trying to find out.””
Zoe studied his face, then reached up and touched his cheek.
“You look like you need a hug.””
He pulled her into his arms.
For a moment, he allowed himself to close his eyes and simply hold her.
Whatever happened next, he would not let the adults around her turn their secrets into her burden.
The next morning, Andre drove to Lorraine's house with Zoe in the back seat. Camille Brooks had insisted on accompanying him after reviewing the documents late into the night.
“You shouldn't confront your mother without someone present,” Camille had told him.
“Not because I think she's guilty, but because this has moved beyond a family disagreement. There may be evidence of financial fraud and an improperly obtained custody order.””
Lorraine lived in a brick colonial house on a quiet street. She had planted white roses along the front walkway, and a small American flag hung beside the door.
When she opened it, her eyes immediately went to Zoe.
“There's my baby.””
Zoe ran into her grandmother's arms.
Lorraine kissed the top of her head and held her for a long moment.
Then she noticed Camille.
“Who's this?””
“Camille Brooks. My attorney,” Andre answered.
Lorraine's smile disappeared.
“You brought a lawyer to your mother's house?””
“You asked me to come and explain what happened. This is me making sure I understand the explanation.””
Lorraine stepped aside.
“Come in.””
They settled in the living room. Zoe sat on the carpet with a box of colored pencils, drawing flowers on the back of an old envelope. Lorraine brought out coffee but didn't offer Camille any.
Andre placed the bank receipt on the coffee table.
“Tell me what this payment was for.””
Lorraine sat opposite him, her hands folded tightly in her lap.
“Vanessa came to me three years ago,” she began.
“She was frightened. She said Darius was threatening to take Zoe away from her.””
Camille leaned forward.
“Did she provide evidence of those threats?””
“She showed me messages.””
“Do you still have them?””
Lorraine hesitated.
“I don't know.””
Camille made a note.
Andre pointed to the receipt.
“And Richard Bell?””
“He told me he could help resolve the situation quietly.””
“Resolve it how?””
“He said there were legal steps that could protect Zoe and make sure she stayed with a stable parent.””
“Which parent?””
Lorraine looked at him.
“You.””
Andre's chest tightened.
“Me?””
“He said you could become Zoe's legal guardian. He told me Vanessa had agreed to the arrangement.””
“I never signed anything.””
“I didn't know that.””
“You paid him almost nineteen thousand dollars.””
“He said the money would cover the legal work, court fees, and an emergency arrangement if Darius tried to take her.””
Camille's expression remained steady.
“Mrs. Mitchell, did you ever speak directly with the court clerk?””
“No.””
“Did you ever see an order signed by a judge?””
“I saw documents Richard gave me.””
“Did you read them?””
Lorraine looked down.
“Not every page.””
Andre let out a short, disbelieving breath.
“You paid a lawyer nearly twenty thousand dollars without reading what he was doing?””
“I trusted him.””
“So did I.””
The words fell between them.
Lorraine looked up, and her eyes filled with tears.
“Andre, I was trying to help you. Vanessa had already lied about her marriage once. I knew she had a past, and I worried she would bring trouble into your life.””
“You knew she was still married?””
“No. Not then.””
“Then what did you know?””
“That she had made mistakes. That she had a complicated history. That she was desperate to keep Zoe.””
Andre leaned forward.
“Did you know Darius was Zoe's biological father?””
Lorraine went completely still.
Camille stopped writing.
Andre watched his mother's face change, the color draining from her cheeks.
“Mom?””
Lorraine pressed a hand to her mouth.
“Vanessa told me.””
“When?””
“Before you moved in with her.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“She begged me not to. She said you would leave if you knew the truth.””
Andre stood.
“So you knew she was hiding the child's paternity, and you let me raise her without telling me?””
“You loved that little girl!””
“That's not the point!””
Zoe looked up from her drawing.
Andre immediately lowered his voice.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart. Keep drawing.””
She returned to her pencils, but her eyes kept flicking toward the adults.
Lorraine began crying harder.
“I thought if you knew, you might feel obligated to stay. I wanted you to choose her because you loved her, not because you felt trapped.””
Andre stared at her.
“I did choose her. Every day. I chose her when she cried through the night.
I chose her when I missed work to take her to the doctor. I chose her when she called me Daddy for the first time.””
His voice cracked.
“And you thought I needed to be manipulated into that?””
Lorraine reached for his hand.
He moved it away.
Camille spoke carefully.
“Mrs. Mitchell, the issue now is whether your payment was connected to the filing that allegedly used Mr. Mitchell's forged signature. Did you authorize anyone to sign his name?””
“No.””
“Did Mr. Bell tell you that a document had been filed in Andre's name?””
Lorraine hesitated.
“Yes.””
Andre felt the room go cold.
“What did he tell you?””
“He said the court needed proof that Andre was willing to accept responsibility for Zoe. He showed me a signature on a document and said it had been verified.””
“Did you know the signature was forged?””
“No!”” Lorraine protested.
“I swear to you, I didn't.””
Camille's gaze sharpened.
“Then why did you pay the law firm on the day the petition was filed?””
Lorraine wiped her face.
“Because Richard told me the matter was settled.””
“What matter?””
Lorraine looked at Andre.
“The custody matter.””
Andre slowly sat down.
For three years, he had believed his life with Zoe had grown naturally out of love and commitment. He had believed the paperwork he signed at Vanessa's kitchen table was routine administrative work.
Now he was discovering that the people closest to him had been making decisions about his daughter behind his back.
Camille gathered the documents.
“We need the complete file from Mr. Bell's firm. We also need to know whether any money was transferred out of Zoe's trust.””
Lorraine's head snapped up.
“What trust?””
Andre looked at her.
“You didn't know?””
“No.””
“Eighteen thousand five hundred dollars wasn't the only money involved,” Camille explained.
“There are records of a trust established for Zoe, followed by transfers to an investment company.””
Lorraine stared at them.
“That money belongs to Zoe.””
“Then we need to find out where it went.””
A sudden knock sounded at the front door.
Lorraine flinched.
Andre walked into the entryway and opened it.
A young man in a gray suit stood outside holding a large envelope.
“Mr. Andre Mitchell?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Price. I'm a process server. I have documents for you.””
Andre accepted the envelope and signed the receipt.
The young man departed.
Camille stepped beside him.
“What is it?””
Andre opened the envelope.
The first page bore the heading of a family court. The second contained a request for an emergency custody hearing.
The petitioner was Darius Cole.
The requested relief included temporary physical custody of Zoe.
Andre felt his hands begin to shake.
“Can he do this?””
Camille took the papers and read quickly.
“He can file a petition. That doesn't mean the court will grant it.””
“He's asking to take her away from me.””
“He's asking the court to recognize his biological relationship. We need to respond properly.””
Andre looked through the doorway at Zoe.
She was still sitting on the carpet, coloring flowers, unaware that her future had become a battle over documents and signatures.
Camille lowered her voice.
“Andre, there's something else.””
She pointed to an attachment near the back.
A declaration from Darius stated that he had evidence Andre was not Zoe's biological father and that his legal guardianship had been obtained through fraudulent means.
Andre's stomach twisted.
The declaration referenced a sealed family court file.
At the bottom was the name of the person who had requested that the file be sealed three years earlier.
*Lorraine Mitchell.*
Andre slowly turned toward his mother.
She looked as if she might collapse.
“I didn't know he would use it like this,” she whispered.
Andre held up the page.
“Then tell me what else you signed.””
Lorraine opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Andre's phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke calmly on the other end.
“Mr. Mitchell, my name is Richard Bell. I understand you've been asking questions about some old legal matters.””
Andre looked at Camille.
“Then you understand why I'm asking.””
A pause followed.
“Your mother made a payment to my firm,” Bell said.
“I believe there has been a misunderstanding about the purpose of that transaction.””
Andre tightened his grip on the phone.
“Then come explain it.””
“I'd be happy to meet with you privately.””
“No. You'll speak with my attorney.””
Bell sighed.
“Your attorney may not appreciate what comes out if we start reopening this matter.””
Camille held out her hand, and Andre put the call on speaker.
“Mr. Bell,” she said, “this is Camille Brooks. Please preserve all records relating to the custody filing, the payment from Lorraine Mitchell, and the trust established for Zoe Mitchell.””
The line went silent.
Then Bell said something that made Andre's blood run cold.
“Ms. Brooks, if you're looking into that trust, you should know that the original beneficiary designation was changed before I ever became involved.””
Andre looked at his mother.
Bell continued.
“And the person who authorized that change wasn't Vanessa.””
The call ended.
Lorraine covered her face with both hands.
Camille stared at the phone.
Andre looked at the sealed court file in her hand.
May you like
For the first time, he understood that the money, the forged signature, and the secret marriage might all be connected to something that had begun long before Vanessa entered his life.
And the person who had set it in motion might have been sitting beside him at the kitchen table for years.
