Chapter 5: A Father's Name on the Wrong Paper

The first hearing was scheduled for Monday morning.

Andre had four days to prepare.

Four days to protect Zoe from a stranger who claimed to be her biological father, to determine whether his own mother had participated in a scheme involving forged legal documents, and to understand why someone had taken money from a trust established for a six-year-old girl.

On Friday, Camille's office smelled of fresh coffee and printer toner. Stacks of documents covered the conference table, each labeled with dates, names, and reference numbers.

Andre sat beside her, reading a copy of the emergency custody petition.

Darius's attorney had included photographs of Zoe from infancy, hospital records, and a statement describing Darius's efforts to locate his daughter.

The language was carefully written.

The petitioner seeks to establish a meaningful parental relationship with his biological child.

Nothing about his appearance at the wedding.

Nothing about the public humiliation.

Nothing about the fact that he had chosen to introduce himself to Zoe through a confrontation between adults.

Andre pushed the pages away.

“He wants the court to believe he suddenly became a father because he found a file.””

Camille removed her glasses.

“The court will consider the whole picture. Biology matters, but so does the child's established relationship with the people who have cared for her.””

“He hasn't been there.””

“Then we document that. School records, medical appointments, photographs, witnesses, financial support. Everything that demonstrates your role in Zoe's life.””

Andre rubbed his face.

“I have years of that.””

“Good. We'll organize it.””

His phone buzzed.

A message from Zoe's teacher asked whether Zoe would be attending the class's upcoming family breakfast.

Andre stared at the word family.

He typed a reply confirming that she would attend, then set the phone aside.

Camille noticed his expression.

“What is it?””

“She asked me last week if she could bring a picture of us to the breakfast.””

“Then bring one.””

“What if she asks why her mother isn't coming?””

Camille's face softened.

“Tell her the truth in an age-appropriate way. You don't have to explain every legal detail. You can say the adults are working through a difficult problem, and she doesn't have to choose sides.””

Andre nodded, though he knew the hardest part wouldn't be answering Zoe's questions.

It would be keeping his anger from becoming the only thing she remembered about this period of her life.

That afternoon, he went to the school to pick her up.

Zoe ran through the classroom door carrying a construction-paper crown.

“Daddy! Look!””

She placed it on his head before he could stop her.

“I'm the queen,” she announced, “and you're the king.””

Andre laughed for the first time in days.

“Is that so?””

“Yes. But you have to obey the queen.””

“What are the queen's orders?””

“Macaroni and cheese.””

“That's a very reasonable queen.””

She took his hand as they walked toward the parking lot.

Then she looked up at him.

“Is the man from the wedding coming back?””

Andre's smile faded.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“Does he really know me?””

“He's trying to learn about you.””

Zoe thought about that.

“Can he learn my favorite color?””

“Maybe.””

“And my favorite food?””

“Maybe.””

She looked down at her shoes.

“But he doesn't know how I like my hair.””

Andre squeezed her hand.

“No, he doesn't.””

“Will he tell me what to call him?””

Andre stopped beside the car.

He crouched in front of her.

“You don't have to decide what to call anyone right now. You can take your time.””

Zoe nodded.

Then she asked the question he had dreaded.

“Can I still call you Daddy if the judge says he's my real daddy?””

Andre felt the words settle deep in his chest.

He took her face gently between his hands.

“Zoe, being your daddy isn't something a judge can take away from my heart. I love you. I have loved you since you were little enough to fall asleep on my shoulder. That will never change.””

She wrapped her arms around him.

“I don't want you to go away.””

“I won't disappear on you.””

He held her until she pulled back.

Then he fastened her into the car seat and drove home.

That evening, a package arrived at the house.

It contained an old photograph album, a stack of hospital records, and a letter from Evelyn Reed.

Andre recognized the handwriting immediately.

He opened the letter at the kitchen table while Zoe watched a cartoon in the living room.

Andre,

I know you have questions. I know you are angry. I have spent three years telling myself that the decisions I made were necessary to protect my granddaughter.

I was wrong about many things, but not about my love for Zoe.

Please look at the documents in the album before you decide what kind of person I am.

There is something about the day Zoe was born that Vanessa never told you.

I cannot explain it over the phone. I will meet with you if you are willing to listen.

Evelyn.

Andre called her immediately.

She answered after several rings.

“Hello?””

“Why did you send me this?””

Evelyn sighed.

“Because you deserve to know.””

“Then tell me.””

“I can't do this on the phone.””

“Everybody keeps saying that.””

“Because some things cannot be explained in five minutes.””

Andre stood and walked toward the window.

“You had three years.””

“I know.””

“You watched me raise that little girl while you kept secrets from me.””

“I thought I was doing what was best for her.””

“Everyone keeps saying that too.””

Evelyn began to cry.

“Please, Andre. Let me see you tomorrow. Just once. I'll tell you everything I know.””

He hesitated.

Then he agreed to meet her at a café near Camille's office, with Camille present.

The next morning, Evelyn arrived carrying a worn leather handbag. Her eyes were red, and she looked older than she had at the wedding.

She sat across from Andre and placed a folded photograph on the table.

It showed Vanessa in a hospital bed, holding a newborn baby. Darius stood beside her, smiling at the camera.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A young man in a hospital gown, standing near the doorway.

Andre leaned closer.

He recognized the face.

Not because he had known the man well, but because he had seen him in family photographs all his life.

His mother's younger brother.

Uncle Marcus.

Andre looked up sharply.

“Why is my uncle in this picture?””

Evelyn twisted her wedding ring.

“Because he was there when Zoe was born.””

“Why?””

“Marcus had been helping Vanessa. She knew him through your mother.””

Andre shook his head.

“This makes no sense.””

Evelyn slid another document across the table.

It was a medical consent form, dated the day Zoe was born. Marcus's name appeared in the witness section.

Below it, someone had written a note about an emergency blood transfusion.

Andre read the note twice.

“What am I looking at?””

“Vanessa nearly died during childbirth,” Evelyn said.

“She needed emergency treatment. There was a complication, and the doctors were concerned about the baby's health too.””

Andre studied the page.

“What does that have to do with my uncle?””

Evelyn took a trembling breath.

“Marcus was the person who brought her to the hospital. He was also the one who paid the first medical bills.””

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he had been helping Vanessa for months.””

Andre felt his jaw tighten.

“Helping her how?””

Evelyn looked at him directly.

“Your uncle and Vanessa were involved before she married Darius.””

Andre sat back.

The café seemed to grow quieter around him.

“That doesn't explain why he was at the hospital.””

“No,” Evelyn whispered.

“It doesn't.””

She opened her handbag and removed a second photograph.

This one showed Marcus standing outside the hospital, holding a folded blanket. His expression was exhausted, his shirt stained with something dark near the cuff.

On the back, in Vanessa's handwriting, were the words:

You promised you would never tell him.

Andre felt the blood drain from his face.

“Tell me what?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Marcus believed Zoe might be his daughter.””

Andre stared at her.

“But Darius's name is on the birth certificate.””

“Yes.””

“Then how could my uncle think that?””

“Because Vanessa told him the timing was uncertain.””

Andre pushed the photograph away.

“Did Marcus ever take a paternity test?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He did one privately.””

“And?””

She looked down at her hands.

“He told me the result was negative.””

Andre exhaled slowly.

“Then why are we talking about this?””

“Because he never showed me the report.””

Andre's expression hardened.

“You don't know the result.””

“No.””

“Then you're asking me to believe a story based on a man's suspicion and a missing piece of paper.””

Evelyn flinched.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like another secret designed to confuse everything.””

“I'm not trying to confuse you.””

“Then why did you authorize the transfer of Zoe's trust?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I didn't authorize it.””

Andre stared at her.

“What?””

“I never transferred that money. I was the original trustee, yes, but I signed a document appointing an administrator to manage the account. I thought the money would remain untouched until Zoe turned eighteen.””

“Who was the administrator?””

Evelyn opened her handbag again and removed a copy of the agreement.

Andre read the name.

Richard Bell.

Beneath it was a second signature.

Lorraine Mitchell.

Andre felt a familiar coldness spread through him.

“Why is my mother's name on this?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Your mother helped arrange the agreement. She told me Bell was a trustworthy attorney. She said the money would be protected.””

“And you believed her?””

“I did.””

Andre leaned forward.

“Did you know about the withdrawals?””

“No. I found out only recently.””

“Then why didn't you report them?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing Zoe.””

Andre sat back.

The answer was becoming a pattern. Every person who had betrayed him seemed to believe fear excused secrecy.

Camille finally spoke.

“Mrs. Reed, we need to see the original trust agreement, all correspondence with Mr. Bell, and any documents showing who authorized the transfers.””

“I brought copies.””

“Where are the originals?””

“In a safe deposit box.””

“Then we'll arrange to obtain them through the proper legal process.””

Evelyn nodded.

Andre looked at the photographs again.

His uncle had been present when Zoe was born. His mother had paid a lawyer. Evelyn had approved a financial arrangement she didn't fully understand. Vanessa had concealed a marriage and possibly a question about paternity.

It felt as though every adult in Zoe's life had built a different version of the truth.

“Why tell me this now?”” he asked.

Evelyn wiped her cheeks.

“Because I received a letter yesterday.””

She removed a small envelope from her bag and slid it across the table.

The handwriting was unmistakably Marcus's.

Andre unfolded the letter.

Evelyn,

I can no longer keep quiet about what happened. I have found the original paternity report, and the result is not what I told you.

I lied because I was afraid of what the truth would do to my family.

If Andre is asking questions, he deserves to know everything.

Tell him to meet me at the old house on Sunday. I will bring the report.

Marcus.

Andre read the final line again.

“Where is my uncle now?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“He called me last night.””

“And?””

“He said he was afraid someone was watching him.””

Camille immediately sat forward.

“Did he say who?””

“No. He refused to tell me over the phone.””

Andre folded the letter.

“Then I'm going to see him.””

Camille shook her head.

“Not alone. And not without arranging a safe meeting.””

Andre looked toward the café window, where sunlight fell across the sidewalk and people moved past carrying shopping bags and paper cups.

He had thought the wedding would be the end of his life with Vanessa.

Instead, it had opened a door into a history he barely understood.

And somewhere inside that history was a paternity report that could change everything he believed about Zoe.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus appeared.

Andre, don't come Sunday. I made a mistake giving Evelyn that letter.

A second message arrived before he could respond.

The report is gone.

May you like

Then a third.

And somebody knows you have been looking for it.
