Chapter 8: The Man Who Sold the Truth
Camille had spread the laboratory correspondence across her conference table by the time Andre arrived.
The letter was brief.
The medical records office confirmed that it had no record of an amended paternity report bearing the number listed in Marcus's notebook. The original testing had been conducted, but the laboratory could not authenticate the later document that had circulated among the family members.
A separate note stated that one archived sample had been destroyed according to the facility's retention policy.
Andre read the letter twice.
“So the report might be fake.””
“It is not an authenticated report,” Camille corrected.
“That's an important distinction. We can't conclude who created it or what the original test results showed.””
“But someone used it to frighten Marcus.””
“Possibly.””
“And Vanessa says Darius had it.””
“Then we need to ask Darius how he obtained it.””
Andre looked at the clock.
“Can we speak to him today?””
Camille nodded.
“His attorney has agreed to a meeting. We'll make it clear that we need his cooperation, but we won't promise him anything in return.””
The meeting was arranged at a neutral conference room in Camille's building.
Darius arrived twenty minutes late.
He wore a charcoal suit and carried a leather briefcase. His bald head shone beneath the overhead lights, and his expression was controlled, almost bored.
He greeted Camille with a nod.
Then he looked at Andre.
“You've been busy.””
Andre didn't offer his hand.
“Where is the paternity report?””
Darius set his briefcase on the table.
“Which report?””
“The amended report you told Vanessa you had.””
Darius's eyes flicked toward his attorney.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
“I never said I had an amended report.””
“Vanessa says you threatened to reveal it at the wedding.””
“I told her I had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Darius opened his briefcase and removed a clear plastic folder.
Inside was a photocopy of a laboratory document.
Andre leaned forward.
The heading looked official. The seal was printed in the upper corner. The names and dates matched the details in Marcus's notebook.
But the signature at the bottom looked strange.
The letters were too uniform, as if they had been copied from a computer rather than written by hand.
Camille examined the page without touching it.
“Where did you get this?””
“An investigator gave it to me.””
“Name?””
“Private investigator. He worked for me.””
“Is he willing to testify about where he obtained it?””
Darius shifted in his chair.
“He's no longer working for me.””
“That wasn't my question.””
“No.””
Camille looked at Andre.
“This document cannot be treated as authentic without verification.””
Andre turned back to Darius.
“Did you know it might be fake?””
Darius's jaw tightened.
“I believed it was real.””
“Why?””
“Because the investigator told me it came from the original file.””
“Which file?””
“The medical records file.””
“The laboratory says the amended report never existed.””
Darius stared at him.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Darius leaned back.
“Richard Bell told me the laboratory had made a mistake.””
Andre felt anger rise.
“Richard again.””
“He said the original result was inconclusive and that a second report had been suppressed.””
“Why would he tell you that?””
“Because I wanted to know if Zoe was my daughter.””
“Then why didn't you request a legitimate test?””
Darius looked down.
“I did.””
“When?””
“Four years ago, through a court process.””
Camille immediately asked, “What happened?””
“The test was never completed. Vanessa filed an objection, and my attorney withdrew when I couldn't afford to continue.””
“Do you have documentation?””
“Yes.””
“Then provide it to us.””
Darius nodded reluctantly.
Andre watched him.
“You've spent years telling yourself Vanessa stole your daughter. But you had opportunities to pursue this legally.””
“I was angry.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“I thought if I waited until I had enough proof, I could make sure she couldn't keep lying.””
“So you waited until my wedding.””
Darius's face hardened.
“I wanted her to feel what it was like to have her life exposed in public.””
The admission hung in the room.
Camille closed her notebook.
“Mr. Cole, revenge is not evidence. If you want to establish a relationship with Zoe, you need to demonstrate that you can put her needs ahead of your anger.””
Darius looked at the floor.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
He didn't answer.
Andre stood and walked to the window.
For all the harm Vanessa had caused, he could now see something unsettling in Darius: a man who had spent years convincing himself that pain gave him permission to hurt someone else.
Andre understood anger.
He understood the temptation to make people feel the damage they had done.
But Zoe was not a weapon.
Neither was the truth.
He turned back.
“Did you know about the trust?””
Darius hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Did you receive any money from it?””
“No.””
“Did you know who controlled it?””
“Richard Bell told me Evelyn Reed had transferred it to an administrator.””
“Did you see the agreement?””
“No.””
Camille slid a copy of the trust records across the table.
“The records show that funds were transferred to a Delaware company. We are investigating the beneficial ownership.””
Darius glanced at the document.
Then he went pale.
Andre noticed.
“What is it?””
Darius didn't answer immediately.
He pulled the page closer and studied the company name.
“Where did you get this?””
“From the trust records.””
Darius shook his head.
“That company was supposed to manage a property investment.””
“What property?””
“A commercial building outside Atlanta. Richard told me he was using the trust's money to purchase it.””
Camille's eyes narrowed.
“Did you invest your own money?””
Darius nodded.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””
Andre stared at him.
“You put your own money into a company connected to Zoe's trust?””
“I was told it was a legitimate investment.””
“By Richard?””
“Yes.””
Camille made a note.
“Do you have the investment agreement?””
Darius opened his briefcase again and removed a thin folder.
The agreement listed the company as a limited liability entity registered in Delaware. It also named an authorized representative.
Andre read the name.
*Lorraine Mitchell.*
His mother's name appeared again.
Darius looked from the document to Andre.
“I didn't know she was involved.””
Andre's voice turned cold.
“Apparently, nobody knows anything until the paperwork shows up.””
Camille examined the agreement.
“This is useful. We need the original, and we'll have the company's registration and transactions independently verified.””
Darius slid the folder across the table.
Then he looked at Andre.
“I want you to understand something. I never wanted Zoe hurt.””
Andre held his gaze.
“You brought a fake report to my wedding and used it to destroy the ceremony.””
“I thought it was real.””
“You wanted to hurt Vanessa.””
Darius looked away.
“Yes.””
“And you didn't care who else got hurt.””
He said nothing.
Andre returned to his chair.
“Then here's what happens now. You cooperate with the investigation. You stop contacting Zoe directly. And if you want a relationship with her, you let the court determine the safest way to proceed.””
Darius's mouth tightened.
“You don't have the authority to decide that.””
“No. The court does. That's why I'm not making threats. I'm telling you the rules I will follow.””
Camille ended the meeting shortly afterward.
As Darius left, he paused at the doorway.
“Andre?””
Andre looked up.
“I really did try to find her.””
“I believe you tried.””
“Then why do you look at me like I'm the enemy?””
Andre considered the question.
“Because you keep treating Zoe like something you lost instead of someone who has to live with the consequences of what we do.””
Darius had no answer.
After he left, Camille began organizing the new evidence.
“We now have a direct connection between Bell, the trust administrator, and the investment company.””
“And my mother.””
“Yes.””
Andre rubbed his forehead.
“I need to talk to her.””
“Not until we've reviewed the records.””
“She's my mother.””
“And the documents may implicate her in a financial scheme. Those facts can both be true.””
Andre looked at the agreement again.
The signature beside Lorraine's name was genuine.
He knew her handwriting.
This time, it wasn't merely a payment that might have been explained as a misunderstanding. It was a signed agreement connecting her to the company that received money from Zoe's trust.
He called Lorraine anyway.
She answered almost immediately.
“Andre?””
“Did you authorize an investment using Zoe's trust?””
Her breathing changed.
“Who told you that?””
“I have the agreement in front of me.””
A long silence followed.
“Your mother didn't understand what she was signing,” she finally said.
Andre closed his eyes.
“That's not an answer.””
“Richard told me the investment would protect the money.””
“Did you read the agreement?””
“He explained it to me.””
“Did you know the company was registered in Delaware?””
“No.””
“Did you know the trust's money would be transferred into it?””
Lorraine began to cry.
“I thought it was going into a property account.””
“How much money?””
“I don't remember.””
“Mom.””
“I don't know!””
Andre heard something break in the background.
Then Lorraine spoke again, her voice barely audible.
“Richard told me the money would be safe. He said Zoe would never need to know about any of this.””
Andre gripped the phone.
“Why would Zoe ever need to know about her own money?””
Lorraine began sobbing.
“I made a mistake.””
“How much?””
“More than I realized.””
“Give me a number.””
She whispered it.
Andre sat down hard.
The amount was nearly the entire original trust balance.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
“Where did the money go?””
“I don't know.””
“Who does?””
“Richard.””
Andre stared at the agreement.
“Then we need to find him.””
“I think he's leaving.””
“What?””
“He called me this morning. He said he was going out of town for a few days. He told me not to contact him.””
Andre looked at Camille, who had stopped typing and was watching him.
“Where is he going?””
“I don't know. He said he had to take care of something before the authorities started asking questions.””
Andre ended the call.
Camille immediately contacted the investigator handling the financial records.
Within an hour, they learned that Richard Bell had withdrawn a large sum from his firm's operating account and canceled two scheduled meetings.
His office manager confirmed that he had collected several boxes of files and left the building.
A warrant had not yet been issued.
But the investigators were moving quickly.
That evening, Andre returned home and found a message on his voicemail.
It was from Richard.
“Mr. Mitchell, I understand you've been asking questions about the trust. I think it's time we had a private conversation. There are things about your mother you need to understand, and I can explain everything if you're willing to listen.””
Andre played the message for Camille.
She shook her head.
“Don't respond. We'll preserve it and have the investigator handle contact.””
Andre nodded.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, it was Evelyn Reed.
“Andre,” she said, breathless, “I just received a package.””
“What kind of package?””
“Documents. Original documents from the trust.””
“Who sent them?””
“There was no return address.””
“Have you opened it?””
“Yes.””
“What did you find?””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“The original beneficiary designation. The one that was changed before Richard Bell became involved.””
Andre stood.
“Who changed it?””
“I don't understand. The signature is yours.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“What?””
“Your name is on the document. It says you requested that Zoe's trust be transferred into a different account.””
Andre felt his blood run cold.
“I never signed that.””
“I know.””
“How can you know?””
“Because the date on the document is from before you even met Vanessa.””
Andre looked at Camille.
She had already begun writing down the details.
Evelyn continued.
“Andre, there's something else. The beneficiary designation doesn't just name Zoe.””
“What does it say?””
“It names a second beneficiary.””
“Who?””
Evelyn began to cry.
“Your mother.””
Andre closed his eyes.
For years, he had thought he was fighting to protect Zoe from the lies of her mother and the demands of a biological father.
Now he was discovering that his own name had been used to redirect a child's inheritance before he had even met the child.
Someone had forged his signature.
Someone had manipulated the trust.
And someone had deliberately tied his mother to the scheme.
Camille took the phone and asked Evelyn to secure the original documents.
When the call ended, she looked at Andre.
“We need to find Richard Bell before he disappears.””
Andre stared at the papers spread across the table.
“There's one thing I don't understand.””
“What?””
“If someone wanted Zoe's money, why would they put my name on the documents before I even knew she existed?””
Camille didn't answer immediately.
Then she pointed to the date on the beneficiary designation.
“Because the document wasn't created when the transfer occurred.””
Andre looked at her.
“It was created earlier?””
“Or someone backdated it.””
She turned the page toward him.
The original signature line had been witnessed by two people.
One was Richard Bell.
The other was Marcus Mitchell.
Andre stared at his uncle's name.
Then he noticed the final line.
*Witness to the beneficiary designation: Lorraine Mitchell.*

The three people who had been hiding the truth about Zoe's birth had also been present when her inheritance was redirected.
And all three had signed the same document.
