Chapter 7: The Secret in the Delivery Room
Vanessa refused to see Andre the first time he requested a meeting.
She refused the second time, too.
On the third attempt, she sent a message through her attorney.
Tell Andre I'll speak to him, but only if he comes alone.
Camille Brooks read the message twice before setting her phone on the conference table.
“No,” she said.
Andre leaned against the office window, watching traffic crawl through the intersection below.
“She might know what happened at the hospital.””
“She might. But that doesn't mean you should meet her without safeguards, especially when someone is sending you threatening messages.””
“I won't go into that room without knowing what she knows.””
“Then we'll arrange a supervised interview with counsel present.””
Andre turned.
“What if she refuses?””
“Then we pursue the information through the legal process.””
He looked down at his hands.
He hadn't slept properly in four nights. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the wedding hall, Vanessa's trembling fingers, and the expression on Zoe's face when she asked whether she could still call him Daddy.
The question followed him everywhere.
At the grocery store.
At red lights.
In the quiet moments after Zoe fell asleep.
He had never doubted his place in her life until the adults around her began treating parenthood like a document that could be transferred, hidden, or purchased.
Camille studied him.
“You need to remember something, Andre. Whatever that report says, it doesn't erase the years you've spent raising Zoe.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
He didn't answer.
Because knowing something intellectually wasn't the same as believing it when the court might soon decide who had the legal right to take a child home.
That afternoon, Camille arranged a meeting at the county detention center, where Vanessa was being held while investigators reviewed the allegations against her.
Andre entered the interview room carrying a folder.
Vanessa was already seated at the table.
She wore a plain gray sweatshirt, and her hair was pulled into a loose bun. Without the wedding makeup and elaborate gown, she looked younger, almost like the woman Andre had first met at a community fundraiser three years earlier.
For one painful second, he remembered why he had fallen in love with her.
Then she looked up.
“Andre.””
He remained standing.
“Tell me what happened at the hospital.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“The day Zoe was born. What happened after Darius left the room?””
Vanessa looked toward the attorney sitting beside her.
“Where did you hear that?””
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
“Then answer the question.””
She folded her hands on the table.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Andre placed the photograph from Evelyn's envelope in front of her.
Vanessa stared at it.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“Where did you get this?””
“Your mother sent it to me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Of course she did.””
“Why was Marcus there?””
She didn't answer.
“Why did he bring you to the hospital? Why was he listed as a witness on the medical forms? And why does his notebook say you told him the child could never learn what happened in the delivery room?””
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“You found Marcus's notebook?””
“We found it in the old house.””
For a moment, she seemed genuinely frightened.
“Is he all right?””
“We haven't been able to reach him.””
Her face crumpled.
“Oh, God.””
Andre leaned forward.
“Vanessa, listen to me. I don't care about embarrassing you. I don't care about what people at the wedding think. I need to know whether Zoe is in danger and why someone is trying to keep this report hidden.””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she whispered, “Zoe was never supposed to be part of any of this.””
“She already is.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked down at the photograph.
“When I was pregnant, Darius and I were separated. We had been fighting for months. He wanted to control every part of my life.
Where I went. Who I spoke to. What I wore.””
Andre remembered Darius's cold expression at the wedding.
He remembered the way he had stepped toward Vanessa, and how instinctively he had moved between them.
“Did he hurt you?”” Andre asked.
Vanessa swallowed.
“He never left marks that other people could see.””
Andre's jaw tightened.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed. Because I thought if I admitted how bad things had become, you'd wonder why I hadn't left sooner.””
“You told me you had divorced him.””
“I wanted to believe I had.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
“No,” she whispered.
“It isn't.””
She took a shaky breath.
“When Zoe was born, Darius came to the hospital. He said he wanted to see his daughter. I let him in because I thought maybe the birth would change him.””
“What happened?””
“He held her for a few minutes. Then a nurse came in and asked him to leave because he was arguing with the staff.””
Andre's eyes narrowed.
“And Marcus?””
“He had driven me to the hospital. He stayed outside the room until the nurses called him because I was bleeding badly.””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“I almost died that night.””
Andre sat down slowly.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because you weren't there. You didn't know me yet.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Marcus helped arrange the emergency treatment. He stayed until the doctors said I was stable. He held Zoe while they worked on me.””
Andre looked at the photograph again.
“And the paternity test?””
Vanessa went pale.
“I knew about it.””
“Who was tested?””
“Darius and Marcus.””
“Why?””
She pressed her lips together.
“Because the dates overlapped. I was separated from Darius, but we were still seeing each other occasionally. Marcus and I had been involved before that.””
Andre felt the room narrow around him.
“You were involved with my uncle?””
“It was before you and I met.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
“Yes,” she said.
“Marcus and I had a relationship.””
“And you thought Zoe might be his daughter?””
“I didn't know. I was frightened, and I didn't want either man to use the baby against me.””
“So you had both of them tested.””
Vanessa nodded.
“What did the results say?””
She stared at the table.
“The first report excluded Marcus.””
Andre felt a sharp pulse of anger.
“We already know that.””
“But the second test was different.””
He went still.
“Different how?””
Vanessa looked toward her attorney.
The attorney leaned close and whispered something to her.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. He deserves to know.””
She turned back to Andre.
“The second laboratory said the samples had been compromised. They couldn't establish paternity conclusively.””
“Then why did Marcus believe the amended report named someone else?””
“Because Richard Bell told him the original samples had been switched.””
Andre stared at her.
“Switched by whom?””
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I swear to you, Andre, I don't know. Richard said there had been a mistake, and that if anyone challenged the original result, the laboratory would have to investigate the chain of custody.””
Andre pressed his palms against the table.
“Who paid Richard?””
“Your mother.””
He looked away.
“Did you know that?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know she had paid him to file documents in my name?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I knew she was trying to protect you.””
“By forging my signature?””
“I didn't know the signature was forged until much later.””
“When?””
She swallowed.
“When Richard sent me the final custody papers. I saw your name and realized you hadn't signed them.””
Andre stared at her in disbelief.
“You knew, and you said nothing?””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That the court would take Zoe away. That Darius would come back. That you would leave.””
“So you let me believe everything was legal.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You had three years.””
“I know.””
“You let me raise your daughter under a lie.””
“She is your daughter!””
The words came out so sharply that her attorney touched her arm.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then she whispered, “I'm sorry.””
Andre felt his eyes burn.
“Do you understand what you've done to her? She thinks she might lose her father because the adults in her life couldn't tell the truth.””
“I never wanted that.””
“But you made choices that brought us here.””
Vanessa bowed her head.
“I know.””
Andre pulled the folder closer.
“Who changed the trust?””
“I don't know.””
“Who told Richard to hide the second test?””
“I don't know.””
“Who sent me the messages warning me to stop investigating?””
“I don't know.””
He stood.
“Then what do you know?””
Vanessa looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes.
“I know Richard kept the original laboratory file. I know my mother believed he was protecting Zoe. And I know your mother was the only person who could have arranged access to the hospital records without raising suspicion.””
Andre felt a cold knot form in his stomach.
“My mother?””
“Lorraine worked at that hospital for years before she retired. She knew people in medical records. She knew the procedures.””
Andre took a step back.
His mother had worked in hospital administration for more than two decades. She knew how records were stored, how requests were processed, and how confidential files could be accessed.
But knowing the system wasn't proof she had manipulated it.
“Are you accusing her of switching the samples?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I'm telling you what I suspect.””
“That's not good enough.””
“I know.””
He gathered the papers.
As he reached the door, Vanessa called after him.
“Andre, wait.””
He turned.
She looked smaller than he had ever seen her.
“I need you to know something about the wedding.””
“What?””
“Darius didn't come there just to expose my marriage.””
Andre's grip tightened around the folder.
“Then why did he come?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“He told me that morning that if I didn't cooperate, he would reveal the truth about Zoe's birth.””
Andre stared at her.
“What truth?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“He said he had the amended paternity report.””
Andre felt the air leave his lungs.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know. But he said the report proved something that would change everything.””
“What exactly did he say?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“He said the man who raised Zoe might be the only man in her life who had never lied to her.””
Andre couldn't speak.
The sentence followed him out of the detention center and into the parking lot.
He had spent years believing that the biggest question was whether Darius was Zoe's biological father.
Now he wondered whether someone had changed the test to make the answer fit a story they wanted everyone to believe.
His phone rang as he reached the car.
Camille.
“Andre, I need you to come to my office immediately.””
“What happened?””
“We received a response from the medical records office.””
“About the paternity test?””
“Yes.””
He opened the driver's door.
“What does it say?””
Camille's voice dropped.
“The laboratory never issued the amended report under the case number we found in Marcus's notebook.””
Andre stopped.
“Then where did the report come from?””
“That's the problem,” Camille said.
“Someone created a document that looks like a laboratory report, but the original laboratory says it doesn't exist.””
Andre stared at the detention center behind him.
May you like
If the amended report was fake, someone had fabricated evidence about Zoe's paternity.
And if someone had gone to that much trouble, the truth they were hiding might be far more dangerous than a question of blood.
