Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Tradition

Nobody spoke.

Not even Linda.

Daniel walked over and picked up my braid from the floor.

Carefully.

Like it was something fragile.

Like it mattered.

He handed it to me.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“For not stopping this before it happened.””

Linda crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“No. What’s ridiculous is pretending this is some beautiful tradition when you know what it really is.””

My bridesmaids exchanged confused looks.

Emily stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Linda’s expression hardened.

“Daniel, don’t.””

That was the first moment I realized something.

She wasn’t angry because he was embarrassing her.

She was afraid.

Daniel noticed too.

He took a deep breath.

“When my grandmother was alive, she started this.””

Linda interrupted.

“Don’t bring her into this.””

“But I will.””

The room went silent again.

Daniel looked at me.

“My grandmother did this to every woman who married into the family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He nodded.

“She called it a tradition. But it wasn’t really about hair.””

Linda looked away.

Daniel continued.

“It was about control.””

The word hung in the air.

Linda immediately shook her head.

“That is not true.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You told every bride they had to cut their hair because they needed to prove they were loyal to the family.””

“That’s not what it was.””

“Then why did Aunt Rachel refuse?””

Linda froze.

Nobody spoke.

I looked between them.

“Aunt Rachel?””

Daniel nodded.

“My aunt was the first woman who said no.””

Linda’s face tightened.

“She was stubborn.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“She was the first person brave enough to say this wasn’t love.””

The wedding coordinator quietly stepped outside.

Everyone was listening now.

Daniel looked at me.

“My grandmother believed wives needed to give something up when they entered the family. Something they loved. Something that belonged only to them.””

My fingers tightened around my braid.

“That’s horrible.””

Daniel nodded.

“It was.””

Linda scoffed.

“You’re making it sound evil.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because it was.””

The word shocked everyone.

Linda had always seemed untouchable.

The kind of person who controlled every room she entered.

But now she looked smaller.

“You never told her,” Linda whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“You never told your wife about the tradition.””

“No.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because I never planned to continue it.””

Linda stared at him.

“But you agreed before.””

“I agreed to a lot of things when I was younger because I was scared of disappointing you.””

That sentence seemed to hurt her.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was true.

I looked at Daniel.

“How long have you known?””

He looked down.

“Since I was a teenager.””

“And you let me walk into this family without warning me?””

His face fell.

“I thought she had changed.””

Linda laughed.

A sharp, cold laugh.

“Changed?””

She looked around the room.

“Everyone wants to make me the villain.””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily spoke.

“Because you cut someone’s hair without permission.””

Linda looked at her.

“You’re just a guest.””

Emily smiled.

“Today I’m family.””

Linda looked furious.

I expected Daniel to comfort her.

To soften.

He didn’t.

Instead, he said:

“Mom, you need to apologize.””

Linda stared at him.

“You’re serious?””

“Yes.””

“You want me to apologize for honoring our family?””

“No.””

He pointed at the braid.

“I want you to apologize for hurting my wife.””

Linda’s eyes narrowed.

“I won’t.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then you’re leaving.””

A few minutes later, Linda walked out.

But before she left, she stopped beside me.

Her voice was quiet.

“You think you won.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She smiled again.

Not warmly.

“This family always gets what it wants.””

Then she walked away.

I watched her disappear.

And for the first time that day, I wondered if Daniel had protected me from one problem…

Only to reveal a much bigger one.

Because when I looked at my phone after the ceremony was delayed, I found a message from an unknown number.

May you like

It contained only one sentence.

“Ask Daniel why his mother chose you.””
