Chapter 3: The Woman Before Me

I stared at the message for almost a full minute.

My hands went cold.

Ask Daniel why his mother chose you.

Not “congratulations.””

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not even a threat.

Just a sentence designed to make me question everything.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I locked my phone.

“Who knew about the tradition?””

He hesitated.

Too long.

That hesitation hurt.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

“I don’t know who sent that.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

He looked away.

And I knew.

There was something else.

After the wedding ceremony, we went to a small hotel room because we had decided to delay our honeymoon until things settled down.

But nothing felt settled.

My dress was hanging by the window.

My flowers were on the table.

The entire room looked like a place where a happy couple should begin their life.

Instead, we sat across from each other like strangers.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Daniel rubbed his face.

“There was someone before you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“A woman?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Were you in love with her?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

But I noticed something.

Pain.

Not romantic pain.

Regret.

“Then what happened?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Her name was Claire.””

The name felt strange.

Like a ghost entering our room.

“She was my fiancée.””

I stared at him.

“You were engaged?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Five years, Daniel.””

“I know.””

“You told me your longest relationship was three years.””

“I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“My mother.””

That answer confused me.

Then he explained.

Claire had been the first woman who refused Linda’s rules.

She refused the haircut.

She refused being controlled.

And Daniel had not defended her.

“She left because I stayed silent,” he said.

I looked at him.

“And then?””

“Then I realized I was becoming my father.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“My father never challenged my mother. He always said keeping peace was more important.””

Daniel looked at his hands.

“But all he did was let her hurt people.””

The room was quiet.

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But I also saw something else.

A man who had spent years afraid.

Still, fear didn’t excuse betrayal.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t understand.””

My voice cracked.

“I trusted you because I thought you were different.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The next morning, we returned to the family house for the wedding reception.

Linda had decided not to come.

At least, that’s what we thought.

When we entered, everyone became silent.

Daniel’s aunt Rachel stood near the kitchen.

She looked at my shortened hair.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“You finally told her.””

Daniel nodded.

Rachel sighed.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Nobody answered.

That hurt worse.

Rachel sat down.

“Because women in this family learned to survive by staying quiet.””

I sat across from her.

“Tell me about Claire.””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

“She deserves to know.””

Rachel took a breath.

“Claire wasn’t the first woman Linda tried to break.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

“She was the third.””

Before I could ask, a sound came from behind us.

A woman’s voice.

“You’re finally hearing the truth.””

We turned.

Standing in the doorway was someone I had never met.

A woman holding an old photo album.

She looked at me.

Then at my braid.

May you like

Then she said:

“My name is Claire.””
