Chapter 2: The Owner's Daughter
Richard Bennett had spent thirty years building an empire.
He had started with a small commercial property in downtown Chicago, borrowed money from two friends, and worked through countless sleepless nights.
Now his company owned office towers, commercial developments, and investment properties across the country.
Sterling Tower was his flagship building.
His name was engraved on a brass plaque near the entrance.
Yet none of that mattered when he saw his daughter on the floor.
“Nia.””
His voice cracked.
He rushed toward her.
Nia tried to stand, but Richard raised a hand.
“Don't. Stay where you are.””
He knelt beside her, completely ignoring the expensive suit touching the marble.
“Let me see you.””
“Dad, I'm okay.””
He looked at her cheek.
“No, you're not.””
Then he examined Amara.
The baby was still crying, her tiny fists moving beneath the soft pink blanket.
Richard gently touched her little hand.
“Hey, princess. Grandpa's here.””
For the first time since the incident, Nia managed a small smile.
“She's been upset.””
“I can see that.””
Richard looked at his daughter again.
“Did she hurt you anywhere else?””
“My hip. I fell when she slapped me.””
His jaw tightened.
He carefully helped Nia to her feet, supporting her elbow while she held the baby.
Only then did he turn around.
Victoria was standing beside Ethan, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.
“Mr. Bennett, I can explain.””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Ethan.
Then at the two security guards.
Finally, his gaze returned to Victoria.
“Explain what?””
Victoria swallowed.
“There was a misunderstanding. This woman entered the building without proper authorization, and I was simply enforcing our visitor policy.””
Nia stared at her.
“That's not true.””
Victoria's eyes flashed.
“I wasn't speaking to you.””
Richard slowly turned toward his daughter.
“Did you have an appointment?””
“Yes. At eleven o'clock.””
“Who with?””
“You.””
Richard looked at the wall clock.
It was 11:08.
He nodded.
“That's correct. I asked you to come today.””
Victoria looked confused.
Richard continued.
“I was supposed to introduce you to the executive leadership team.””
Ethan's eyebrows rose.
“Mr. Bennett, I wasn't informed that—”
“You weren't informed?””
Richard interrupted him.
“That's interesting. Because I personally sent an appointment notification to the executive office yesterday.””
Ethan looked down at his tablet.
Victoria quickly stepped in.
“Mr. Bennett, perhaps there was a communication error. We receive hundreds of visitors every day.””
Richard pointed toward Nia's cheek.
“Is this part of your visitor policy?””
Victoria froze.
“I didn't mean to hurt her.””
“You struck my daughter?””
“She became argumentative.””
Nia shook her head.
“I asked her to call upstairs.””
Victoria turned toward her.
“You were refusing to cooperate!””
Richard raised his hand.
“Don't speak over her.””
The lobby became completely silent.
Richard turned to Olivia at the reception desk.
“What happened?””
Olivia looked frightened.
Victoria immediately intervened.
“Olivia, I suggest you be very careful about what you say.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Did I ask you a question?””
Victoria pressed her lips together.
Olivia took a breath.
“Mr. Bennett, Ms. Bennett arrived at 10:52.
She showed me her appointment confirmation. I verified the meeting on the visitor schedule and issued her a temporary badge.””
Richard nodded.
“And then?””
“Ms. Hargrove came downstairs. She told Ms. Bennett she wasn't authorized to wait in the lobby.””
“Did she have an appointment?””
“Yes, sir.””
Olivia looked toward Nia.
“Then Ms. Hargrove slapped her.””
Victoria's face turned crimson.
“That's a lie!””
Olivia flinched.
Richard looked at the receptionist.
“Thank you for telling the truth.””
Then he turned toward the security guards.
“Did either of you witness the incident?””
One guard looked at the other.
The older one finally spoke.
“Yes, sir. I saw Ms. Hargrove strike her.””
Victoria stared at him.
“You told me you didn't see anything!””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“I didn't want to get involved.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“Apparently, neither did anyone else.””
He turned toward the visitors.
Several people immediately lowered their phones.
A middle-aged man stepped forward.
“Sir, I recorded the whole thing.””
Richard looked at him.
“Would you be willing to provide that recording to our legal department?””
“Absolutely.””
The man held up his phone.
“It's all there. The slap, what she said about people like her, and the way she treated the young woman.””
Richard nodded.
“Thank you.””
Victoria's composure was beginning to collapse.
“Mr. Bennett, please. I have worked for this company for eleven years. You know my record.””
Richard looked at her.
“Eleven years?””
“Yes.””
“And in those eleven years, how many people have you treated this way?””
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Sir, I think we're allowing emotions to cloud the situation. Ms. Hargrove was simply trying to maintain security.””
Richard stared at him.
“Then why did you order security to remove my daughter after she showed you her appointment confirmation?””
Ethan adjusted his tie.
“I wasn't aware she was your daughter.””
Richard took a step closer.
“And that makes it acceptable?””
“No, sir. That's not what I meant.””
“Would you have treated her differently if you knew who she was?””
Ethan said nothing.
Richard's expression hardened.
“That's what I thought.””
Nia gently touched her father's arm.
“Dad, can we please go somewhere quiet? Amara is getting overwhelmed.””
Richard immediately softened.
“Of course, sweetheart.””
He turned to Olivia.
“Please arrange a private room upstairs. And have someone bring water for my daughter.””
Olivia nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
Richard looked at the security guards.
“Make sure nobody touches her again.””
Both men nodded.
Then he turned back toward Victoria.
“You're going to stay here.””
Victoria blinked.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
Richard took out his phone.
“I'm contacting our general counsel and the head of human resources.””
Victoria's eyes widened.
“Mr. Bennett, surely we can handle this privately.””
Richard looked at her for several seconds.
“Privately?””
He glanced at the visitors who had witnessed everything.
“My daughter was slapped in a public lobby. My granddaughter was frightened. Your employees watched it happen.””
He lowered his voice.
“And now you want privacy?””
Victoria's face had gone pale.
Richard dialed a number.
“James? I need you at Sterling Tower immediately. Bring the incident-response team.””
He paused.
“Yes. We have a serious problem.””
He ended the call.
Nia looked at her father.
“Dad, I didn't come here to cause a scene.””
Richard gently touched her shoulder.
“You didn't cause this, Nia.””
He looked toward Victoria.
“She did.””
As Olivia escorted Nia toward the private elevator, Richard noticed something on the floor beside the reception desk.
A small white envelope.
Nia's name was written across it.
He picked it up.
The envelope had been opened.
Inside was a printed document bearing the company's official letterhead.
Richard read the first line.
Then he read it again.
His expression changed.
“Where did this come from?”” he asked.
Olivia turned around.
“Mr. Bennett?””
Richard held up the paper.
“Who authorized this document?””
Victoria looked at it.
For the first time, she appeared genuinely terrified.
Because the document wasn't a visitor notice.
May you like
It was a termination letter.
And it had been prepared for someone named Nia Bennett.
