Chapter 3: The Letter Nobody Was Supposed to See
The private conference room on the twenty-second floor overlooked the Chicago skyline.
Glass walls stretched from floor to ceiling. A long walnut table occupied the center of the room, surrounded by leather chairs.
It was the room where Richard Bennett negotiated multimillion-dollar contracts.
Today, it was where his daughter sat holding a newborn.
Nia had finally managed to calm Amara.
The baby was asleep against her chest, one tiny hand resting near her mother's collarbone.
A glass of water sat untouched beside her.
Richard stood near the window, reading the document he had found in the lobby.
His attorney, James Walker, had arrived ten minutes earlier.
James was a silver-haired man in his early sixties who had represented Richard's company for almost two decades.
He took the document from Richard.
“What exactly is this?””
Richard pointed to the heading.
“Read it.””
James scanned the first page.
His eyebrows rose.
“Employment termination notice?””
Nia looked up.
“What's that?””
Richard turned toward her.
“Apparently, someone prepared a document claiming you're being terminated from your position.””
Nia frowned.
“But I don't work here.””
“Exactly.””
James examined the bottom of the page.
“There are two signatures.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Whose?””
“Victoria Hargrove's. And Ethan Cole's.””
Nia shifted Amara slightly.
“Why would they make a termination letter for me?””
Richard didn't answer.
He looked toward James.
“Find out.””
James placed the document on the table.
“I'll need access to the personnel records and the internal correspondence system.””
Richard nodded.
“You'll have full access.””
A soft knock interrupted them.
Olivia entered carrying a folder.
“Mr. Bennett, I found something you might want to see.””
Richard looked up.
“What is it?””
Olivia placed the folder on the table.
“These are copies of the visitor records from this morning.””
Richard opened it.
The first page showed Nia's arrival at 10:52.
The second showed her appointment confirmation.
The third showed an unusual entry.
<escape>10:54 AM — Visitor flagged for removal.</escape>
Richard frowned.
“Who entered this?””
Olivia checked the screen.
“Mr. Cole.””
James looked up.
“Two minutes after she arrived?””
“Yes.””
Richard stared at the entry.
“Why?””
Olivia hesitated.
“There was another note attached.””
“What note?””
Olivia turned the tablet around.
A sentence appeared on the screen.
Possible disruption. Remove before executive arrival.
Nia looked at her father.
“Dad, I don't understand.””
Richard's eyes remained on the screen.
“Neither do I.””
James pulled out his phone.
“I'll preserve this record before anyone can alter it.””
Olivia nodded.
“There is something else.””
Richard looked at her.
“What?””
“Ms. Hargrove told the reception team yesterday that no unauthorized family members were to be allowed upstairs.””
Richard frowned.
“Family members?””
“Yes, sir. She specifically mentioned the Bennett family.””
Nia sat up straighter.
“Why would she do that?””
Richard looked at the folder again.
He had an idea.
But he wanted evidence before making an accusation.
“Olivia, thank you. Please don't discuss this with anyone until James has reviewed the records.””
“Understood, sir.””
After Olivia left, James opened his laptop.
“Richard, I want to ask something.””
“Go ahead.””
“Why was Nia coming here today?””
Richard glanced at his daughter.
“Because I wanted her to meet the executive team.””
James waited.
Richard continued.
“I'm preparing to announce a new family foundation. Nia has spent the last three years working with maternal support organizations. I wanted her to help lead the foundation's community programs.””
Nia shook her head.
“Dad, you didn't have to announce anything today.””
“I know.””
“You could have just called me.””
Richard smiled faintly.
“I wanted to see your face when I told you.””
For a moment, the room became quiet.
Nia looked down at Amara.
“I thought it was just a meeting.””
“It was supposed to be.””
James closed his laptop halfway.
“Then why was someone preparing a termination notice?””
Richard looked at him.
“That's what we're going to find out.””
At that moment, Richard's phone rang.
The caller ID showed the company's chief financial officer, Martin Shaw.
Richard answered.
“Martin.””
“Richard, I need to speak with you immediately.””
“I'm in a meeting.””
“This can't wait.””
Richard looked at James.
“Go ahead.””
Martin lowered his voice.
“There's a problem with the executive appointment schedule. Someone changed the permissions on your calendar yesterday.””
Richard's expression tightened.
“What kind of permissions?””
“Your eleven o'clock appointment with Nia was moved to a restricted category. The visitor system didn't receive the updated authorization.””
Richard glanced at his daughter.
“Who changed it?””
Martin paused.
“Ethan Cole.””
James immediately began typing.
Richard's voice became colder.
“Was that the only change?””
“No.””
“What else?””
“Someone also requested access to the draft announcement for the Bennett Family Foundation.””
Richard stood still.
“Who?””
Martin took a breath.
“Victoria Hargrove.””
James stopped typing.
Nia looked between the two men.
“What announcement?”” she whispered.
Richard didn't answer.
Martin continued.
“There's another issue. The foundation's proposed executive appointment was removed from the internal schedule.””
Richard tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who removed it?””
“The request was submitted under the building management office.””
Richard ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then James slowly turned his laptop toward Richard.
“I've found something.””
A spreadsheet was open.
It contained a list of internal communications, authorization changes, and personnel requests.
James pointed to a row dated three days earlier.
“Someone requested that Nia Bennett be flagged as an unauthorized visitor.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Three days ago?””
“Yes.””
Nia stared at the screen.
“But Dad, I only confirmed my appointment yesterday.””
Richard looked at her.
“Exactly.””
James scrolled down.
Another entry appeared.
Visitor removal to be completed before 11:00 AM executive meeting.
Nia felt a chill move through her.
“Why would they plan this?””
James clicked another file.
A draft email appeared.
The subject line read:
*RE: Bennett Family Foundation — Leadership Appointment*
Richard read the message.
His face became expressionless.
The email had been written by Ethan and sent to Victoria.
It contained one sentence that made the entire situation much worse.
If the chairman's daughter is prevented from reaching the executive floor, the proposed appointment can be delayed until the foundation structure is finalized.
Nia stared at the words.
“Dad, they knew who I was?””
Richard didn't respond.
James opened the attachment.
It was a preliminary organizational chart for the foundation.
Nia's name appeared beside the title:
*Proposed Executive Director — Community and Maternal Support.*
But someone had crossed it out.
In its place was another name.
Victoria Hargrove.
Richard slowly closed the laptop.
For the first time that morning, he looked genuinely stunned.
“Victoria wasn't just trying to remove my daughter from the building,” he said.
James nodded.
“She was trying to take her position.””
Nia looked down at Amara.
Her voice was barely audible.
“She slapped me because she wanted my job?””
Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I don't know how far this goes yet.””
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message had arrived from the company's internal compliance director.
Richard opened it.
His face turned cold.
James noticed immediately.
“What is it?””
Richard handed him the phone.
The message contained a photograph of a confidential document.
At the top was a bold heading:
*PROJECT SUCCESSION — PHASE TWO.*
Beneath it were three names.
Victoria Hargrove.
Ethan Cole.
And a third name that made Richard's blood run cold.
Martin Shaw.
The company's chief financial officer.
James slowly looked up.
“Richard, I think this goes beyond the building manager.””
Richard stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
We have reason to believe someone inside the company has been preparing to remove you from control of the foundation.
Richard looked toward his daughter.
Nia was holding Amara, completely unaware that the confrontation in the lobby might have exposed something much larger.
He picked up his phone.
“James,” he said quietly, “lock down the executive records.””
James nodded.
“And Victoria?””
Richard looked through the glass wall toward the elevators.
“Bring her upstairs.””
He paused.
“Along with Ethan and Martin.””
May you like
Then he added the words that made James stop typing.
“Because tomorrow's board meeting just became an emergency investigation.””
