Chapter 5: The Man Who Had Been Betraying Him

Richard Bennett read the name on the screen without speaking.

*DAVID MORGAN.*

For nearly twenty years, David had been his chief financial officer.

He had attended family celebrations, stood beside Richard at charity events, and helped negotiate some of the largest contracts in the company's history.

Richard had trusted him with information that few people outside the family had ever seen.

“Tell me this is a mistake,” Richard said.

Andrew pulled up the supporting documents.

“I'm afraid the records are consistent.””

Richard stared at the screen.

The ownership structure showed that a private entity connected to David Morgan had quietly acquired an interest in the investment group behind Whitmore Capital.

But that wasn't all.

There were consulting payments, undisclosed transfers, and a series of unusual transactions involving the lodge's operating accounts.

Richard lowered himself into a chair.

“How long?””

“We're still investigating.””

“Andrew, I want a timeline.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And I want to know whether David had access to the original property valuations.””

Andrew hesitated.

“He did.””

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

The lodge had been his dream for years.

He remembered walking through the unfinished building with David, discussing where the stone fireplace should go, how the timber beams should be restored, and how the property could become a destination for families.

David had been there from the beginning.

Now Richard was looking at evidence that the same man might have been helping someone take control of the business.

“Call him,” Richard said.

Andrew frowned.

“Sir?””

“Call David.””

“Wouldn't it be better to speak with legal counsel first?””

Richard looked at him.

“I've known that man for nineteen years. I want to hear what he has to say.””

Andrew placed the call.

It rang four times.

Finally, David answered.

“Richard! What a surprise.””

Richard's voice was flat.

“Where are you?””

“I'm at home. Why?””

“We need to discuss Whitmore Capital.””

There was a brief pause.

“What about them?””

“Did you help them acquire debt connected to our properties?””

David laughed.

“That's a strange question.””

“It's a simple one.””

“Richard, we've discussed this. The company needs capital. The Whitmore proposal is a good opportunity.””

“I didn't ask whether it was a good opportunity.””

David sighed.

“I'm tired, Richard. Can we talk tomorrow?””

“No.””

“What's going on?””

Richard looked at the ownership records.

“Your name appears in the beneficial ownership documents.””

Silence.

Then David spoke.

“Those documents don't tell the whole story.””

“Then explain the whole story.””

“Not over the phone.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Were you working with Thomas Whitmore without disclosing your financial interest?””

David took a breath.

“Richard, you have to understand something. The company has been struggling.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Which company?””

“Bennett Hospitality.””

“We have profitable properties.””

“Some of them. But you refuse to modernize. You spend too much on staff. You insist on keeping old facilities operational even when they're not producing enough revenue.””

Richard stared at the floor.

“Those facilities employ hundreds of people.””

“Exactly. And that's why you need someone with a more realistic approach.””

Richard's voice hardened.

“So you decided to sell pieces of my company without telling me?””

David responded quickly.

“I'm trying to protect its future.””

“By hiding your ownership interests?””

“It's more complicated than that.””

“Then make it simple.””

David exhaled.

“Thomas has a plan. The investment will give us control of the properties, restructure management, and improve profitability.””

Richard looked at the screen again.

“Who is we?””

David didn't answer.

Richard understood.

“You're part of it.””

“Richard, listen—”

“Don't contact me again until our attorneys have reviewed everything.””

He ended the call.

Andrew remained silent.

Finally, he asked, “What would you like me to do?””

Richard stood.

“Freeze the transaction. Restrict David's access to company financial systems, but preserve every record. Have legal counsel examine all transfers and communications.””

“Understood.””

“And Andrew?””

“Yes?””

“Do not delete or alter anything. I want the investigation conducted properly.””

Andrew nodded.

Richard glanced toward the elevators.

His daughter and grandson were upstairs.

He needed to tell Maya that the situation had become more complicated.

But before he could move, another message arrived.

This one came from the security supervisor.

*We have additional footage from the service corridor. It may be relevant to the incident.*

Richard frowned.

“What service corridor?””

Andrew read the message.

“Apparently, Mrs. Whitmore entered the management hallway about twenty minutes before the confrontation.””

Richard stared at him.

“Why?””

“The camera shows her meeting someone.””

“Who?””

Andrew enlarged the attached still image.

The photograph showed Vanessa standing beside a man in a dark jacket.

The man's face was partially visible.

Richard recognized him immediately.

It was David Morgan.

Maya was feeding Elijah when Richard entered the suite.

She looked up.

“Dad?””

Richard closed the door behind him.

“Can we talk?””

“Of course.””

He sat across from her.

For a moment, he simply watched his grandson.

Then he explained what they had discovered.

Maya listened carefully.

When he mentioned David, her eyebrows rose.

“David Morgan?””

Richard nodded.

“Apparently, he has an undisclosed interest in the investment group.””

Maya looked toward the bassinet.

“Why would he do that?””

“Money. Control. Perhaps both.””

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she asked, “Do you think Vanessa knew?””

“We're trying to establish that.””

Maya thought back to the lobby.

“Dad, when Vanessa saw you arrive, she didn't look surprised that you were the owner. She looked surprised that you came so quickly.””

Richard considered that.

“That's an important distinction.””

“She also mentioned her husband's business relationships before you even introduced yourself.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Go on.””

Maya adjusted Elijah's blanket.

“I think she believed the hotel was already going to belong to her husband. Maybe she thought she could behave however she wanted because she expected the deal to close.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“That may be exactly what happened.””

Maya hesitated.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Anything.””

“Are you going to let this ruin everything you've built?””

Richard smiled faintly.

“No.””

“But you sound angry.””

“I am angry.””

“Then what are you going to do?””

Richard looked at the baby.

“I'm going to make sure the people responsible are held accountable. But I'm not going to destroy the company just because a few people tried to take advantage of it.””

Maya nodded.

Then her phone rang.

The caller was Olivia.

She answered on speaker.

“Hey.””

“Maya, I just remembered something.””

“What?””

“When I visited Dad's office last month, I saw Vanessa Whitmore there.””

Richard sat up.

“You saw Vanessa?””

“Yes. She was in the executive conference room with David.””

Maya looked at her father.

Olivia continued.

“I remember because she was wearing this bright pink dress. I thought it was strange because Dad hadn't mentioned her being part of the meeting.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Did you hear what they were discussing?””

“Not everything. But I heard David say something about getting the hotel employees to accept the transition before the announcement.””

Richard looked at Andrew's earlier message on his phone.

The service corridor footage.

Vanessa and David together.

The investment agreement.

The pattern was becoming clearer.

“Olivia,” Richard said, “are you certain?””

“Yes, Dad.””

“Did anyone else see them?””

“I don't know.””

Richard thanked her and ended the call.

Maya looked at him.

“So they knew each other.””

Richard nodded.

“And possibly planned the transition together.””

He stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, snow continued falling over the mountain valley.

A few minutes passed before he spoke again.

“Maya, there's something I need to ask you.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Did Vanessa say anything unusual when she first approached you?””

Maya thought carefully.

“She said the hotel wasn't for people like me.””

Richard waited.

“Anything else?””

Maya hesitated.

Then she remembered.

“Yes. Before she slapped me, she said something about the lobby being reserved for people who belonged.””

Richard turned around.

“Exactly what words did she use?””

Maya closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“She said, 'People who actually matter shouldn't have to deal with this.''”

Richard's expression hardened.

He took out his phone.

“Andrew?””

“Yes, sir?””

“I want the full service-corridor recording. Not just still images. Every minute before and after Vanessa met David.””

“I'm retrieving it now.””

Richard ended the call.

Then Maya said something that made him stop.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“What if the slap wasn't just about me?””

Richard turned.

“What do you mean?””

Maya looked down at Elijah.

“What if she was trying to make an example of me? Maybe she wanted the employees to see that she could decide who belonged in the hotel.””

Richard remained silent.

Maya continued.

“Maybe she thought nobody would challenge her because she believed her husband was about to take control.””

Richard stared at his daughter.

He had spent hours examining financial documents.

But Maya had noticed something important about the human behavior behind them.

And now he wondered whether the confrontation had been an accidental exposure of a much larger plan.

At 9:17 that evening, Andrew entered the private suite carrying a tablet.

“Mr. Bennett, we've recovered the footage.””

Richard stood.

“Show me.””

Andrew placed the tablet on the coffee table.

The video began.

Vanessa entered the management corridor at 2:11 p.m.

David Morgan was waiting near the office door.

They spoke for several minutes.

Then David handed her a small envelope.

Vanessa opened it.

She looked at the contents and smiled.

Andrew paused the recording.

“There's something else.””

He enlarged the image.

The envelope contained a printed document.

Richard leaned closer.

He could read only part of the heading.

*PROPERTY TRANSITION — EMPLOYEE COMPLIANCE PLAN.*

Maya stared at the screen.

“What does that mean?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Andrew opened another file.

It contained a spreadsheet listing dozens of hotel employees.

Some names were highlighted in yellow.

Others were marked in red.

Beside each name were notes.

Richard scanned the list.

Then his face changed.

“Andrew, why is my daughter's name on this spreadsheet?””

Maya leaned forward.

Her name was there.

*MAYA BENNETT — FAMILY / OWNER REPRESENTATIVE.*

Beside it was a note.

*Potential influence over chairman. Manage before closing.*

Richard felt a cold anger settle over him.

The document had been created before the incident in the lobby.

And Vanessa had been carrying it.

But the next line was even more disturbing.

*If she appears at the property, do not allow her access to management.*

Maya looked at her father.

“Dad…”

Richard slowly closed the tablet.

“They knew you were coming.””

Then Andrew revealed the final detail.

The document had been created six days earlier.

May you like

And it had been approved by someone whose name Richard never expected to see.

His own executive assistant.
