Chapter 6: The Woman Who Had Been Watching Them

Richard Bennett didn't sleep that night.

He sat in the private conference room overlooking the mountain valley, reading the documents Andrew had recovered.

Outside, snow covered the parking lot and the wooden rooftops.

Inside, the lodge remained warm and quiet.

But the company Richard had spent decades building was beginning to look unfamiliar.

His executive assistant, Caroline Hayes, had worked beside him for eleven years.

She organized his schedule, managed sensitive correspondence, and often knew about business decisions before senior executives did.

She had attended Maya's wedding.

She had held Elijah shortly after his birth.

Richard had trusted her.

Now her name appeared beneath the approval line of a document that specifically identified his daughter as someone who needed to be managed before the acquisition.

Andrew placed another folder on the table.

“Sir, we've checked the document history.””

Richard looked up.

“What did you find?””

“The employee compliance plan was created by David Morgan's office. But the final version was approved using Caroline's executive account.””

Richard stared at him.

“Could someone else have accessed it?””

“Possibly. We're checking the access logs.””

“Has Caroline been contacted?””

Andrew shook his head.

“Not yet.””

Richard leaned back.

“Good. Don't alert her until we know more.””

Andrew nodded.

Then he placed another page on the table.

“There's a second issue.””

Richard sighed.

“Go ahead.””

“The document includes a proposed list of employees who would be removed after the acquisition.””

Richard scanned the names.

Receptionists.

Housekeeping supervisors.

Maintenance workers.

Security personnel.

Some had worked at the lodge for more than fifteen years.

A note beside several names read:

*Replace with lower-cost staffing structure.*

Richard's jaw tightened.

“They're treating these people like numbers.””

Andrew nodded.

“That's not the worst part.””

He pointed toward the bottom of the page.

A separate section listed employees who had previously raised concerns about workplace conduct.

One name was Daniel.

Richard looked up.

“Daniel from the lobby?””

“Yes.””

Beside Daniel's name was a note:

*Frequently challenges guest complaints. Potential disruption to new management.*

Richard slowly placed the page down.

“So Vanessa and David were already identifying employees who might question their authority.””

“It appears that way.””

Richard stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he watched the snow falling beneath the outdoor lights.

Then he turned.

“Call Daniel.””

Daniel was sitting in the staff break room when the telephone rang.

He almost ignored it.

He had finished his shift hours earlier, but the afternoon's events had left him uneasy.

When he saw that the call came from the corporate office, he answered.

“Hello?””

“Daniel, this is Andrew Bennett. I'm calling on behalf of Mr. Bennett.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Yes, sir.””

“Would you be available to come to the conference room? We need to ask you a few questions.””

“Is this about what happened with Ms. Maya?””

“Yes.””

Daniel hesitated.

“I already told security what I saw.””

“We know. We appreciate that. There's something else we'd like to discuss.””

Daniel agreed.

Twenty minutes later, he entered the conference room.

Richard stood to greet him.

“Daniel.””

“Mr. Bennett.””

“Thank you for coming.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“Am I in trouble?””

Richard frowned.

“Why would you think that?””

“I don't know, sir. After what happened earlier, I wasn't sure.””

Richard gestured toward a chair.

“Sit down. You're not here because you've done something wrong.””

Daniel slowly sat.

Andrew placed the employee compliance document on the table.

Richard pointed toward Daniel's name.

“Have you ever had a disagreement with Vanessa Whitmore?””

Daniel looked at the page.

His expression changed.

“Yes, sir.””

“When?””

“About two months ago.””

“What happened?””

Daniel took a breath.

“She was staying here with her husband. She complained that one of our housekeepers had entered her suite without permission.””

Richard nodded.

“Was that true?””

“No, sir. The housekeeper had been instructed to deliver fresh towels, but Mrs. Whitmore had placed a privacy sign on the door.

The employee didn't enter. She left the towels outside.””

“And Vanessa complained anyway?””

“Yes. She demanded that the housekeeper be fired.””

Richard looked at Andrew.

“Was a report filed?””

Daniel nodded.

“I submitted one. But the next morning, Mr. Collins told me to withdraw it.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Raymond told you to withdraw a complaint?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“He said Mrs. Whitmore was an important guest and that I needed to learn how to protect the hotel's reputation.””

Richard remained silent.

Daniel continued.

“After that, I was moved away from the front desk. I was told I needed more training.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Did anyone explain why?””

“No.””

Andrew made a note.

“Did Vanessa ever threaten you?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“Once.””

Richard looked directly at him.

“What did she say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She told me that people who wanted to keep their jobs should learn when to stay quiet.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Did you report that?””

“I tried.””

“To whom?””

“Caroline Hayes.””

Richard froze.

“Caroline?””

Daniel nodded.

“She told me she'd look into it.””

“And?””

“Nothing happened.””

Richard looked toward Andrew.

The pattern was becoming impossible to ignore.

Vanessa had complained about employees.

Raymond had protected her.

David had been arranging the acquisition.

And Caroline had apparently been involved in managing the employees who might interfere.

Richard turned back to Daniel.

“Why did you help Maya today?””

Daniel looked surprised.

“Because she needed help.””

“Even though you knew it might cause trouble for you?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“My mother raised me to treat people the way I'd want someone to treat her.””

Richard nodded.

“Your mother taught you well.””

Daniel's eyes became wet.

“Thank you, sir.””

Richard stood.

“Until this investigation is complete, nobody is to retaliate against you for providing truthful information. If anyone approaches you about your statement, contact Andrew directly.””

“Yes, sir.””

Daniel left the room.

Richard watched him go.

Then he turned toward Andrew.

“Make sure he's protected.””

“Of course.””

At 7:30 the following morning, Caroline Hayes arrived at the lodge.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a leather portfolio.

She entered through the side entrance and walked directly toward the management office.

Raymond was not there.

His temporary replacement, the regional operations director, greeted her.

“Good morning, Caroline.””

“Good morning. Is Mr. Bennett available?””

“He's in the conference room.””

“Thank you.””

She continued down the hallway.

Before she reached the door, Andrew stepped outside.

“Caroline.””

She smiled.

“Andrew. I didn't expect to see you here.””

“We need to speak.””

“Of course. Is something wrong?””

Andrew gestured toward the conference room.

“Please come inside.””

Caroline entered.

Richard was standing beside the table.

“Good morning, Caroline.””

“Richard.””

She smiled and placed her portfolio down.

“I heard about yesterday. I'm so sorry about Maya. I hope she's feeling better.””

Richard watched her carefully.

“She's resting.””

“Good. I was planning to send flowers.””

“That's thoughtful.””

Caroline sat.

“Have you spoken to the legal team about the investment agreement?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the folder containing the employee compliance plan.

“Do you recognize this document?””

Caroline glanced at it.

Her smile weakened.

“I'd have to look at it.””

“Your executive account approved the final version.””

Caroline leaned forward.

“That's impossible.””

Andrew placed the access report beside it.

“Your credentials were used to approve the document at 6:42 p.m. last Thursday.””

Caroline looked at the page.

Then she sat back.

“Someone must have used my account.””

Richard studied her.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you authorize anyone to use your credentials?””

“No.””

“Did David Morgan ask you to review an employee transition document?””

Caroline hesitated.

“David sends me documents all the time.””

“That wasn't my question.””

She looked at Richard.

“I don't remember.””

Richard opened another file.

It contained a series of emails.

One message had been sent from Caroline's account to David.

The subject line read:

*Maya Bennett — Property Visit.*

Richard turned the laptop toward her.

“Would you like to explain this?””

Caroline read the email.

Her face slowly lost its color.

The message contained details about Maya's expected arrival at the lodge, the room reservation, and the fact that she would be traveling with her newborn.

Maya had never publicly announced the visit.

Only a small number of people knew about it.

Richard looked at Caroline.

“How did David know my daughter was coming?””

Caroline didn't answer.

Richard continued.

“Who told him?””

Caroline folded her hands.

“Richard, I think you're misunderstanding the situation.””

“Then help me understand it.””

She looked toward Andrew.

Then back at Richard.

“David said the investment group needed to know whether family members would interfere with the transition.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Why would my daughter interfere with anything?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you send him her travel details?””

Caroline's voice became defensive.

“I was following instructions.””

“Whose instructions?””

She hesitated.

“David's.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“So you were providing confidential family information to a man who was secretly working with an investment group attempting to acquire control of our properties.””

Caroline looked down.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””

Richard stared at her.

“What was supposed to happen?””

She began to cry.

“David told me the deal was already approved. He said the company would be better off after the transition. He said you were becoming too emotionally attached to the properties.””

Richard remained still.

“And my daughter?””

Caroline wiped her eyes.

“He said she was a risk.””

Richard's voice dropped.

“A risk?””

“He said you would listen to her if she became involved.””

Andrew exchanged a glance with Richard.

Caroline continued.

“David wanted to know whether she might visit before the closing. He said it was important that the family not create complications.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Did he tell Vanessa?””

Caroline looked up.

“I don't know.””

“Did you know Vanessa was coming to the lodge?””

Caroline hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Caroline looked toward the table.

“Because David told me not to.””

Richard slowly closed the folder.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he stood.

“Caroline, your access to company systems is suspended pending the investigation. You will provide all relevant communications to legal counsel. You are not to delete, modify, or transfer any company records.””

Caroline looked devastated.

“Richard, please. I have worked for you for eleven years.””

“I know.””

“I never intended to hurt your family.””

Richard looked at her.

“But you helped someone target them.””

Caroline lowered her head.

An hour later, Maya entered the conference room carrying Elijah.

She had heard that Caroline was being questioned and wanted to know what had happened.

Richard pulled out a chair.

“Are you feeling better?””

“Yes. Elijah slept well.””

He smiled at the baby.

Then Maya noticed the documents spread across the table.

“Is that Caroline's email?””

Richard nodded.

Maya read the subject line.

*Maya Bennett — Property Visit.*

Her stomach tightened.

“She knew I was coming?””

“Yes.””

Maya looked at her father.

“Then Vanessa may have known, too.””

“Possibly.””

Maya slowly sat down.

“Dad, I don't understand something.””

“What?””

“If they knew I was coming, why did Vanessa act so surprised when she saw me?””

Richard considered the question.

“Maybe she didn't know exactly when you would arrive.””

Maya shook her head.

“Or maybe she knew exactly who I was, but thought I wouldn't tell you what happened.””

Richard looked at her.

Maya continued.

“Think about it. She acted like she owned the lobby. She didn't seem worried about the cameras. And when you arrived, she immediately started talking about the investment.””

Richard's expression changed.

He picked up his phone.

“Andrew, I need you.””

Andrew entered.

“Yes, sir?””

“Find out whether Vanessa contacted anyone before the incident.””

Andrew nodded.

“Security has already begun checking the records.””

A few minutes later, he returned.

His face was serious.

“We found a call.””

Richard looked up.

“From whom?””

“Vanessa called David at 1:58 p.m., approximately thirteen minutes before she entered the lobby.””

Maya frowned.

“What did she say?””

“We don't have the audio yet. But the call lasted four minutes.””

Richard looked at the time stamp.

Then at the investment documents.

He felt certain that the pieces were finally coming together.

Until Andrew added one final detail.

“Sir, there's another call.””

Richard turned.

“Whose?””

Andrew placed a printed telephone log on the table.

“David Morgan called the hotel security office immediately after Vanessa's call.””

Richard frowned.

“Why would he call security?””

Andrew looked at Maya.

Then back at Richard.

“Because someone had already instructed security to restrict access to the executive floor.””

Maya's eyes widened.

“Who?””

Andrew took a breath.

“The request came from the chairman's office.””

Richard stared at him.

“That office is under my authority.””

Andrew nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

He placed the final document on the table.

The access request had been submitted using Richard's own digital authorization.

And the signature appeared to be his.

But Richard had never approved it.

May you like

Someone had been using his authority to control who could enter his own hotel.

And now he had to find out how far that deception went.
