Chapter 9: The Courtroom Wasn't the Only Place They Would Fight

Richard read the legal notice twice.
Thomas Whitmore was claiming that the investment transaction had reached a binding stage before Richard suspended negotiations.
The notice demanded access to financial records, property-management systems, and several operational accounts.
It also threatened legal action if Bennett Hospitality interfered with the proposed transition.
Andrew placed his phone on the table.
“Our attorneys are reviewing the claim.””
Richard looked at him.
“Can Thomas actually take control?””
“Not based on what we've seen so far. But the claim references the altered family governance amendment.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“They're using the document Charles forged.””
“Yes, sir.””
Richard walked toward the window.
“Then we need to establish that the document is fraudulent.””
Andrew nodded.
“Legal counsel believes we have enough evidence to challenge it. But we need the original records, the document history, and witness statements.””
Richard turned.
“Get everything ready.””
Andrew hesitated.
“There's another issue.””
Richard looked at him.
“What now?””
“The claim includes a request for temporary restrictions on your authority as chairman while the dispute is reviewed.””
Richard stared at him.
“They want to remove me from my own company?””
“They're asking the court to limit certain decisions until the ownership dispute is resolved.””
Richard let out a slow breath.
“Of course they are.””
Maya stood near the doorway, holding Elijah.
“Dad, does this mean they can take the hotel?””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
“But they're trying.””
“Yes.””
She looked down at her son.
“Then what happens now?””
Richard walked over and gently touched Elijah's cheek.
“Now we show them the truth.””
By lunchtime, the lodge had become the center of a formal investigation.
Corporate attorneys arrived.
Security supervisors were interviewed.
Employees were asked to provide statements.
The original property deeds were moved into a secure evidence room.
Every digital record connected to the disputed investment was preserved.
And Richard made one decision that surprised everyone.
He requested that the lodge remain open.
Andrew frowned when he heard.
“Sir, given everything that's happening, wouldn't it be safer to temporarily close the property?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because the employees have done nothing wrong. The guests have done nothing wrong. We aren't going to punish hundreds of people because a few executives decided to behave dishonestly.””
Andrew nodded.
“Understood.””
Richard continued.
“Make sure the staff receive their normal pay. Nobody loses a shift because of this investigation. And no employee who provides truthful information will be retaliated against.””
“Of course.””
Maya listened from the doorway.
She smiled.
Her father had always believed that a business was only as strong as the people who kept it running.
And now, when his company was under attack, he was still thinking about the employees.
At 2:30 p.m., Vanessa Whitmore returned to the lodge.
This time, she wasn't wearing the fuchsia dress.
She wore a black coat, dark sunglasses, and an expression that suggested she expected everyone to move out of her way.
Two men in business suits accompanied her.
She walked straight toward the reception desk.
“I need to speak with Mr. Bennett.””
The receptionist looked toward Andrew.
“Do you have an appointment?””
Vanessa removed her sunglasses.
“I'm not asking for an appointment.””
Andrew approached.
“Mrs. Whitmore.””
She turned.
“Good. Take me to Richard.””
“Mr. Bennett is occupied.””
“Then tell him Thomas has sent me.””
Andrew remained polite.
“I'm afraid that doesn't change the situation.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You people need to understand that the investment agreement is still active.””
Andrew looked at her.
“That matter is being reviewed by legal counsel.””
“Then stop interfering with it.””
“I'm not authorized to discuss the transaction.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“Where is Maya?””
Andrew didn't answer.
Vanessa looked toward the elevators.
“She's upstairs, isn't she?””
Andrew stepped slightly into her path.
“Mrs. Whitmore, please direct any questions about Ms. Bennett through legal counsel.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You really think you're protecting her?””
Andrew remained silent.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Tell Richard I want to speak with him. And tell him that if he keeps pushing this, the entire company could be damaged.””
Andrew looked directly at her.
“Perhaps you should have considered that before striking his daughter.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Watch yourself.””
“I'm simply stating what happened.””
She turned sharply.
“Fine. I'll speak to him myself.””
But before she could reach the elevators, Richard appeared.
“Mrs. Whitmore.””
Vanessa stopped.
“Richard. Finally.””
He gestured toward the conference room.
“Come with me.””
Inside the conference room, Vanessa took a seat without waiting to be invited.
Her two companions remained near the door.
Richard sat opposite her.
Andrew stood beside the table.
Vanessa placed a document in front of Richard.
“This is a formal communication from Thomas's legal team.””
Richard glanced at it.
“I've already received it.””
“Then you understand that the transaction cannot simply be canceled because of a personal disagreement.””
Richard looked at her.
“This isn't a personal disagreement.””
“Of course it is. Your daughter had an unpleasant interaction with me, and now you're using your position to punish my husband.””
Richard folded his hands.
“Your husband is being investigated for undisclosed financial arrangements, unauthorized access restrictions, and the use of falsified ownership documents.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Those are allegations.””
“Yes.””
“And you have no proof that Thomas knew anything about them.””
Richard looked at her.
“That's what the investigation will establish.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Then let me make something clear. Thomas has investors. He has legal representation. He has people who will not allow you to destroy his reputation.””
Richard nodded.
“That's his right.””
Vanessa seemed surprised by the calm response.
She continued.
“And if you continue this campaign, the board will have questions about your leadership.””
Richard studied her.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I'm explaining reality.””
Richard looked toward Andrew.
“Please show Mrs. Whitmore the footage.””
Andrew opened the security recording.
The lobby appeared on the screen.
Vanessa watched herself enter.
She watched Maya apologize.
She watched her own hand strike Maya's cheek.
Then she watched Raymond point toward the entrance.
Andrew paused the video.
Richard looked at her.
“Is there anything you'd like to correct?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I already explained that I was upset.””
“You struck a woman holding a newborn.””
“I barely touched her.””
Richard leaned forward.
“The footage shows otherwise.””
Vanessa removed her sunglasses and placed them on the table.
“Richard, let's be practical. What do you want?””
Richard looked at her.
“I want the truth.””
She laughed.
“That's not a business answer.””
“It's the only answer I'm interested in.””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You're making a serious mistake by trusting your daughter so completely.””
Richard's expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Ask her why she came here.””
Richard remained still.
“She told me why.””
“Did she tell you everything?””
Andrew stepped forward.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I think you should be careful.””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Your daughter knows more about the investment than she's admitting.””
Richard stood.
“That's enough.””
Vanessa collected her documents.
“Believe whatever you want.””
She walked toward the door.
But before leaving, she turned.
“You should ask Maya what happened six months ago.””
Richard froze.
“What happened six months ago?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
Then she walked out.
Richard found Maya in the suite.
She was sitting beside Elijah's bassinet, folding tiny clothes.
When she saw her father, she smiled.
“Hey.””
Richard closed the door.
“Sweetheart, I need to ask you something.””
Maya looked up.
“What?””
“Did anything happen six months ago involving Whitmore Capital?””
Maya's hands stopped moving.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she slowly placed the baby clothes on the sofa.
“Why are you asking?””
“Vanessa just suggested that you know something about the investment.””
Maya looked toward the window.
Richard sat beside her.
“Talk to me.””
Maya took a deep breath.
“Six months ago, I was working on a community development project.””
Richard nodded.
“I remember.””
“It involved providing affordable childcare and job-training opportunities in communities near our hotel properties.””
“Yes.””
Maya continued.
“One of the organizations that submitted a proposal was called the Whitmore Community Foundation.””
Richard frowned.
“Thomas's foundation?””
“I think so.””
“What happened?””
Maya looked down.
“They wanted to use our hotel conference facilities for a fundraising event. I reviewed their proposal because I was helping the community outreach team.””
Richard waited.
Maya continued.
“I noticed that the financial projections didn't match the supporting documents. Some of the money supposedly allocated to childcare programs was listed as administrative expenses.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Did you report it?””
“Yes. I sent the documents to the foundation's compliance office and copied our community development director.””
Richard stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was an accounting issue. I didn't want to involve you unless there was something serious.””
“What happened afterward?””
“The foundation withdrew its proposal.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Did they contact you?””
Maya nodded.
“Someone from their office called me. They asked me to reconsider the report because it could damage their reputation.””
“Who called?””
“I don't remember his name. But he mentioned Thomas Whitmore.””
Richard was silent.
Maya continued.
“A week later, I received an email saying the foundation had corrected its financial reporting. I assumed that was the end of it.””
Richard looked at her.
“Did you keep the original documents?””
Maya nodded.
“I saved everything.””
“Where?””
“On my old laptop. I also sent copies to my personal email.””
Richard stood.
“Sweetheart, that may be important.””
Maya looked concerned.
“Why?””
Richard explained the investment dispute.
The altered ownership documents.
The payments.
The attempt to isolate family members.
Then he told her about Vanessa's warning.
Maya listened carefully.
When he finished, she looked at her father.
“Dad, what if they wanted to keep me away because I had already seen their financial records?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“That's beginning to look possible.””
Maya reached for her phone.
“I can find the emails.””
Within twenty minutes, Maya had located the original correspondence.
Andrew arrived with a secure laptop.
Maya opened her email account and found the message from six months earlier.
The subject line read:
*Whitmore Foundation — Financial Review.*
She opened the attachments.
Richard leaned closer.
The documents showed several discrepancies.
Money allocated to community programs had been redirected through affiliated consulting companies.
The listed beneficiaries were difficult to verify.
And one of the consulting companies shared an address with an entity now connected to Whitmore Capital.
Andrew compared the records.
His eyes widened.
“Mr. Bennett, these are the same companies appearing in the investment disclosures.””
Richard looked at him.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes.””
Maya stared at the screen.
“So this wasn't just about buying the hotels.””
Andrew nodded.
“It may have been about using the acquisition to gain access to the company's financial structure.””
Richard turned toward his daughter.
“Your report may have threatened their entire plan.””
Maya looked sick.
“I had no idea.””
Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You couldn't have known.””
Andrew opened another attachment.
It contained an email chain.
The final message had been sent from an account belonging to David Morgan.
He read it aloud.
“'The Bennett family has already identified irregularities in the foundation accounts. The daughter must not be allowed to access the transition files before closing.''”
Richard stared at the screen.
The email was dated five months earlier.
Before the investment proposal.
Before the call-routing system.
Before Vanessa ever entered the mountain lodge lobby.
Maya slowly sat down.
“They knew about me all along.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Then Andrew scrolled to the bottom.
There was another message.
This one had been sent by Charles.
It contained only one sentence.
*If Maya becomes involved, use the original agreement to remove Richard before she can expose the foundation records.*
Richard felt the room tilt.
His brother hadn't simply been helping Whitmore Capital.
He had been planning to remove Richard from control of the company.
And Maya's earlier investigation was the reason.
That evening, Richard convened an emergency meeting with the company's legal team.
The original financial records were added to the investigation.
The lawyers immediately began preparing a response to Thomas Whitmore's claim.
But at 8:46 p.m., another message arrived.
This time, it came from the company's external bank.
The bank had received an instruction to release funds from a restricted corporate reserve account.
The amount was substantial.
Andrew opened the authorization.
“Mr. Bennett, this is serious.””
Richard looked up.
“What?””
“The request was submitted this afternoon.””
“By whom?””
Andrew turned the screen around.
The authorization appeared to carry Richard's signature.
Again.
Richard stared.
“I didn't approve this.””
Andrew nodded.
“We know.””
“Can the transfer be stopped?””
“We've contacted the bank. But the request was submitted with supporting documentation.””
Richard examined the details.
The transfer was scheduled for the following morning.
And the beneficiary was an entity controlled by Whitmore Capital.
Richard looked toward the attorneys.
“Freeze the account. Notify the bank that the authorization is disputed.””
One attorney nodded.
“We'll handle it immediately.””
Then Maya entered.
“Dad?””
Richard turned.
“What is it?””
She held her phone.
“I just received a message.””
He took it.
The message came from an unknown number.
*Your father is looking in the wrong place. The money is only one part of the plan. Check the mountain lodge's original property deed before tomorrow morning.*
Richard stared at the screen.
Maya looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Richard slowly turned toward Andrew.
“Get the original deed.””
Andrew hesitated.
“Sir, we already reviewed the property records.””
“Then review them again.””
A few minutes later, Andrew returned carrying the archival box.
Richard opened it.
He examined the original deed.
Then he compared it with the digital ownership record.
His face went pale.
The digital version listed a different legal owner.
The mountain lodge had been transferred into a separate holding company.
And the transfer date was six months earlier.
Richard looked at Andrew.
“Who authorized this?””
Andrew checked the record.
Then he whispered:
“Charles Bennett.””
Richard's eyes moved to the final page.
There was a second signature.
Thomas Whitmore.
But the date beneath it was impossible.
It was dated three days before Richard's father had died.
Richard slowly sat down.
His voice barely carried across the room.
“Someone has been planning this for years.””
And then the telephone rang.
The caller was the bank's fraud department.
They had stopped the transfer.
But they had discovered something even worse.
May you like
The money was not being sent to Whitmore Capital.
It was being sent to an account registered in Maya Bennett's name.
