Chapter 8: The Brother Behind the Betrayal

Richard Bennett read his brother's name three times.
Charles Bennett.
For five years, Charles had lived quietly in a coastal home in Maine.
He had retired from the company after a disagreement over expansion plans, but he still held a minority ownership interest and remained a trusted adviser.
Richard had never considered him a threat.
In fact, when the family business faced difficult decisions, Richard had often asked for his opinion.
Now his name appeared beside the authorization for a call-routing system designed to prevent Richard from receiving information directly from his own employees.
“Stephanie,” Richard said, “are you certain this is Charles's handwriting?””
She nodded.
“I saw him sign the installation request.””
“When?””
“About two weeks ago.””
Richard looked at Andrew.
“Why wasn't I informed that Charles visited the property?””
Andrew checked the records.
“He wasn't listed as a scheduled guest.””
“Then how did he enter?””
Stephanie answered.
“He used his executive access card.””
Richard stared at her.
“His card should have been deactivated when he retired.””
“I know, sir.””
Andrew opened the access records.
“Actually, it appears the card was reactivated eleven days ago.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“By whom?””
Andrew looked at the screen.
“Caroline Hayes.””
The room fell silent.
Richard slowly sat down.
“Of course.””
Maya was holding Elijah near the window.
She looked toward her father.
“Dad, could Uncle Charles be involved in this?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He remembered the last conversation he had with his brother.
Charles had called him several months earlier and complained that Richard was spending too much money maintaining older properties.
He had also questioned the company's decision to prioritize employee welfare over aggressive expansion.
Richard had thought it was another disagreement between two brothers who had different visions.
Now those conversations sounded very different.
Andrew placed another document on the table.
“Sir, there's something else.””
Richard looked up.
“Show me.””
Andrew opened a transaction report.
It showed several payments from a company connected to Whitmore Capital to an investment account belonging to Charles.
The payments began shortly after Charles retired.
Richard read the figures.
Then he slowly lowered the paper.
“How much?””
Andrew answered.
“Approximately 1.8 million dollars over fourteen months.””
Maya's eyes widened.
Richard looked toward the fireplace.
His brother hadn't simply been advising a competitor.
He had been receiving money.
And the call-routing system was only one part of the arrangement.
“Call Charles,” Richard said.
Andrew hesitated.
“Sir, I recommend we speak with legal counsel first.””
Richard nodded.
“You're right.””
He placed the transaction report into the folder.
“Have the attorneys review every transfer. I want to know whether these payments were disclosed anywhere in our records.””
“Understood.””
“And don't contact Charles yet.””
Maya looked at him.
“Why not?””
Richard met her eyes.
“Because if he's involved, I want to understand exactly how far this goes before he knows we've found him.””
An hour later, Maya was sitting with her father in the private dining room.
Elijah was asleep in his bassinet.
A pot of tea sat untouched between them.
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
“Can I ask you something?””
“Of course.””
“Do you think Uncle Charles knew about what happened to me?””
Richard looked down.
“I don't know.””
“But his name was on the system that was supposed to redirect your calls.””
“Yes.””
“And he was receiving money from Whitmore Capital.””
“Yes.””
Maya was quiet.
Then she said, “Maybe he thought he was helping them take control of the company.””
Richard nodded.
“Possibly.””
“Or maybe he wanted control himself.””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“That is what worries me.””
Maya adjusted Elijah's blanket.
“Dad, I don't want you to make decisions because you're angry about what happened to me.””
Richard smiled faintly.
“You sound like your mother.””
“That's not an answer.””
He laughed softly.
Then he became serious.
“You're right. I won't make decisions out of anger. Everything will be handled through the proper legal channels.””
Maya nodded.
“Good.””
Richard reached across the table and held her hand.
“I am sorry.””
Maya looked surprised.
“For what?””
“For bringing you into a situation you never should have had to face.””
She shook her head.
“You didn't bring me into it. I came here to surprise you.””
Richard looked at Elijah.
“And I was supposed to be spending the weekend with my grandson.””
Maya smiled.
“You still can.””
For the first time that day, Richard relaxed.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Andrew.
*We've identified the person who installed the call-routing software. It's not an outside contractor. It was installed by a member of the family.*
Richard frowned.
He opened the attached photograph.
It showed someone entering the hotel's secure server room at 11:43 p.m. on the night the system was activated.
The person wore a baseball cap and a dark jacket.
But the face was visible when they turned toward the security camera.
Richard recognized the man.
It was Charles.
Meanwhile, in a private office across town, Vanessa Whitmore was pacing.
Her husband, Thomas, stood beside the desk.
He was a tall man in his early sixties, with expensive glasses and a habit of tapping his fingers whenever he became irritated.
“You told me this would be handled,” Thomas said.
Vanessa threw her handbag onto the sofa.
“It was handled until Richard arrived.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Why did you slap the woman?””
Vanessa stopped.
“I didn't plan to.””
“You didn't plan to?””
“She bumped into me. I was angry.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Do you understand what you've done?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I didn't know she was his daughter.””
“That doesn't matter!””
Vanessa stared at him.
Thomas pointed toward the television.
A local news channel was showing footage of the lodge's snowy entrance.
The reporter was discussing an ongoing corporate investigation involving a luxury hospitality company.
The report didn't identify Maya, but it mentioned an incident involving a guest and allegations of discrimination.
Thomas turned off the television.
“The board has already contacted me.””
Vanessa looked alarmed.
“What did you tell them?””
“I told them the incident was being investigated.””
“Good.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No, Vanessa. It isn't good. The acquisition was supposed to close tomorrow.””
She shrugged.
“Then close it.””
Thomas stared at her.
“Richard has frozen the transaction.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“What?””
“He's reviewing the ownership disclosures.””
She sat down.
“Can he do that?””
“Yes. It's his company.””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Then we need to speak to Charles.””
Thomas nodded.
“I've already tried.””
“And?””
“He isn't answering.””
Vanessa reached for her phone.
“Call him again.””
Thomas took out his own phone.
He dialed.
The call rang.
Then Charles answered.
“Thomas.””
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“We have a problem.””
Charles laughed bitterly.
“You think?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Richard knows about the payments.””
Silence.
Then Charles spoke.
“How much does he know?””
“He has the transaction records.””
Charles swore under his breath.
Thomas continued.
“He also knows about the call-routing system.””
Charles became very quiet.
“Who told him?””
“We don't know.””
Charles exhaled.
“Then the situation is worse than I thought.””
Thomas looked toward Vanessa.
“Can you still stop the transaction?””
Charles hesitated.
“Not without triggering an investigation.””
“Then what do we do?””
Charles answered slowly.
“We need the original ownership documents.””
Thomas frowned.
“What documents?””
“The ones Richard keeps in the corporate archive.””
“Why?””
“Because they contain the original agreement between the brothers. If Richard finds the amendment, he can challenge the entire investment structure.””
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“Where is the archive?””
Charles replied.
“Inside the mountain lodge.””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Can you get it?””
Charles paused.
“I know someone who can.””
Then the call ended.
Back at the lodge, Andrew was examining the corporate archive access records.
Richard stood beside him.
“Have you found anything?””
Andrew nodded.
“Charles accessed the archive three times in the last month.””
“Which files?””
Andrew opened the records.
“The original partnership agreement, the property ownership schedules, and a document titled Family Governance Amendment.””
Richard froze.
“Show me.””
Andrew opened the file.
The document was dated twelve years earlier.
It contained the original agreement between Richard and Charles when they first expanded the family business.
Richard scanned the pages.
Then he reached the amendment.
His expression changed.
“That's impossible.””
Andrew leaned closer.
“What is it?””
Richard pointed to a signature.
The document appeared to grant Charles additional voting rights under certain circumstances.
But Richard remembered signing a different version.
A version that had never granted those rights.
“Andrew, I need the original physical document.””
Andrew nodded.
“It's stored in the archive.””
“Then retrieve it.””
A few minutes later, a security supervisor entered carrying a sealed archival box.
Richard opened it.
Inside were several original agreements.
He found the family governance amendment.
He placed it beside the digital copy.
Then he saw the difference.
The original document had three pages.
The digital version had four.
The fourth page contained the additional voting-rights clause.
Someone had inserted it.
Richard looked at Andrew.
“This was never part of our agreement.””
Andrew examined the document.
“Then someone altered the record.””
Richard nodded.
“And used it to justify giving Charles authority he never had.””
Maya entered the room with Elijah.
“Dad?””
Richard looked up.
“We found something.””
He explained the altered document.
Maya listened carefully.
Then she noticed a handwritten note attached to the original box.
“What's that?””
Richard removed it.
The note was written in his father's handwriting.
It contained a short message:
*Richard, if Charles ever claims control of the company, check the original property deeds. He knows what we agreed to. Never let him change the story.*
Richard stared at the note.
His father's words carried a warning he hadn't understood until now.
He looked at Andrew.
“Find every original property deed. Especially the lodge.””
Andrew nodded.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“What?””
“Security just reported that someone attempted to enter the corporate archive.””
Richard stood.
“Who?””
Andrew looked at the screen.
“Charles Bennett.””
Richard stared at the door.
“Where is he now?””
“Security intercepted him near the service entrance.””
Richard took a breath.
“Bring him to the conference room.””
Charles Bennett entered fifteen minutes later.
He looked older than Richard remembered.
His gray hair was thinner, and his face was tired.
But his eyes remained sharp.
“Richard.””
Richard stood across the table.
“Charles.””
The brothers stared at each other.
Finally, Charles glanced toward the documents.
“So you've been digging.””
Richard pointed toward the chair.
“Sit down.””
Charles remained standing.
“I'd rather not.””
Richard nodded.
“Then let's get straight to it.””
He placed the altered amendment on the table.
“Did you add this page?””
Charles looked at it.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he answered.
“Yes.””
Maya, standing near the wall, felt her stomach tighten.
Richard's voice remained controlled.
“Why?””
Charles looked at his younger brother.
“Because you weren't listening.””
Richard stared at him.
“So you forged an amendment?””
“I corrected an agreement that should have been changed years ago.””
“You altered a legal document.””
“I protected my interests.””
Richard slowly shook his head.
“You retired. You sold part of your management responsibilities. You received everything we agreed upon.””
Charles laughed bitterly.
“You got the company.””
“We built it together.””
“And then you made every decision without me.””
Richard looked stunned.
“Because you retired!””
Charles pointed toward him.
“You think you deserve everything because you became the face of the business.””
Richard's voice dropped.
“I never denied what you built.””
“You never gave me what I deserved.””
Charles looked toward Maya.
“And now you're bringing your daughter into everything.””
Maya stepped forward.
“I came here to visit my father.””
Charles ignored her.
Richard placed the payment records on the table.
“Did Whitmore Capital pay you 1.8 million dollars?””
Charles looked at the papers.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To help them finance the transition.””
Richard shook his head.
“You were helping them take control of the company.””
Charles leaned forward.
“I was helping them correct what you refused to fix.””
Richard stared at him.
Then he asked the question that silenced the room.
“Did you know they planned to target my daughter?””
Charles didn't answer.
Richard repeated it.
“Did you know?””
Charles finally looked up.
“I knew they wanted her kept away from the negotiations.””
Maya felt her eyes fill.
Richard's voice became almost a whisper.
“And you allowed it.””
Charles looked away.
“I didn't know Vanessa would behave like that.””
Richard stared at his brother for a long moment.
Then he said:
“You knew enough.””
Charles reached for the folder.
Andrew immediately stepped between them.
“Please don't touch the documents.””
Charles looked at him angrily.
“You people have no idea what you're doing.””
Richard remained still.
“Actually, Charles, I think we're beginning to understand.””
Charles turned toward the door.
Then he stopped.
“You're making a mistake, Richard.””
Richard looked at him.
“No. The mistake was trusting you with something you believed you were entitled to steal.””
Charles left the room.
But as the door closed, Andrew received a final notification.
It was from the company's external legal team.
The subject line read:
*URGENT — WHITMORE ACQUISITION CLAIM FILED.*
Richard opened it.
The first paragraph contained a statement that made him go completely still.
May you like
Thomas Whitmore was claiming that the acquisition agreement had already been legally activated.
And he was demanding immediate control of the lodge.
