Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Building

“Daddy.””

Vanessa's voice broke as the older man reached her.

Richard Carter immediately dropped to one knee.

He ignored the expensive marble beneath his trousers.

He ignored the audience.

He ignored Evelyn.

His attention was entirely on his daughter and grandson.

“Let me see you, sweetheart.””

Vanessa shifted Noah slightly so her father could examine her face.

Richard's jaw tightened.

There was a bright red mark across her left cheek.

A small tear rolled down his daughter's face.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

“I didn't want to ruin your evening.””

Richard stared at her.

“Ruin my evening?””

He gently touched her shoulder.

“Vanessa, you're my daughter. That baby is my grandson. You could never ruin anything by asking me for help.””

He looked at Noah.

The little boy was still crying.

Richard carefully placed one finger against the baby's tiny hand.

“Hey, little man. Grandpa's here.””

Noah's fingers curled around it.

For the first time since entering the building, Richard's expression softened.

Then he stood.

And the warmth disappeared.

“Mr. Carter,” Evelyn began quickly, smoothing the front of her pink dress, “there appears to have been a misunderstanding.””

Richard looked at her.

“A misunderstanding?””

“Yes. This woman entered through the wrong entrance, and when I attempted to explain the theater's access policy, she became confrontational.””

Vanessa stared at her.

“That's not what happened.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“I was simply protecting the experience of our ticket holders.””

Richard glanced at the audience.

Several guests suddenly became very interested in their phones.

He turned back to Evelyn.

“Did you strike her?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

“Mr. Carter, I would never intentionally—”

“That's not what I asked.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sir, I think we should discuss this privately.””

Richard slowly turned toward him.

“And you are?””

“Daniel Price. Assistant venue manager.””

Richard nodded.

“Daniel, did you witness this woman being struck?””

Daniel glanced at Evelyn.

“She was becoming difficult to manage.””

Richard's expression didn't change.

“That's not an answer.””

Daniel shifted his weight.

“I didn't see the entire interaction.””

Vanessa let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You were standing three feet away.””

Evelyn immediately interrupted.

“Vanessa, please. There's no need to make this more dramatic than it is.””

Richard raised one hand.

“Don't address my daughter.””

The sentence landed harder than a shout.

Evelyn took a step backward.

Richard looked toward the security officers.

“Marcus, secure the entrance. Nobody touches my daughter or her child.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And call the general manager. I want him here immediately.””

One of the officers reached for his radio.

Evelyn's face changed.

“Mr. Carter, with respect, I am the manager responsible for this venue tonight. I have procedures to follow.””

Richard looked at the gold name badge on her dress.

“Apparently, you have forgotten them.””

He opened his leather folder.

Inside was a printed document with the Grand Imperial Theater's official letterhead.

He held it up.

“Do you know what this is?””

Evelyn glanced at the paper.

“No, sir.””

“It's the guest access and accommodation policy approved by the board.””

Richard turned toward the audience.

“Every employee of this theater is required to treat every legitimate guest with dignity. That includes families with children. It includes people who need assistance. And it includes people who don't look like you.””

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

Richard continued.

“My daughter was invited here tonight. Her name is on the guest list. She has a reserved seat. She has every right to be in this building.””

Evelyn's lips parted.

“Your daughter?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes. My daughter.””

He glanced down at Vanessa.

“And the mother of my grandson.””

Daniel looked as though someone had poured ice water down his back.

Evelyn tried to recover.

“Mr. Carter, I had no idea she was related to you.””

Richard stared at her for several seconds.

Then he asked a question that made her face turn pale.

“Would that have changed how you treated her?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Richard stepped closer.

“Let me make something clear. You don't need to know who someone is to understand that you cannot hit them.””

A murmur passed through the lobby.

A young woman near the staircase lowered her phone.

An older gentleman removed his glasses.

The string quartet had stopped playing.

Vanessa stood carefully, cradling Noah.

Richard immediately moved beside her.

“Are you feeling dizzy?””

“No, Dad.””

“Does your cheek hurt?””

“A little.””

“Then we're getting it checked.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“Mr. Carter, I really think we can resolve this without involving the board. I have worked here for six years.””

Richard looked at her.

“Six years?””

“Yes, sir.””

“And in those six years, did you ever read the employee conduct policy?””

“Of course.””

“Then you should understand why I'm asking questions.””

He turned toward Marcus.

“Find the camera footage from the main entrance and the east lobby. Preserve everything from the last thirty minutes.””

Marcus nodded.

“Already contacting the control room, sir.””

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“Security cameras?””

Richard didn't respond.

Daniel looked at his tablet.

“Sir, the camera system is sometimes delayed. There could be technical issues.””

Richard turned slowly.

“Why are you worried about the cameras, Daniel?””

“I'm not.””

“Then you won't mind us reviewing them.””

Daniel swallowed.

“No, sir.””

Richard's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

It was Thomas Reed, the theater's general manager.

Richard answered.

“Thomas, come to the main lobby immediately.””

A voice responded through the speaker.

“Is everything all right, Richard?””

“No.””

“What's happened?””

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“One of your managers struck a guest holding a newborn. Your assistant manager then attempted to remove her from the building.””

There was silence.

Then Thomas said, “I'll be there in two minutes.””

Richard ended the call.

Vanessa moved closer to her father.

“Dad, I don't want you to lose your temper because of me.””

Richard looked at her.

“Sweetheart, I'm not angry because you called me.””

He glanced at the baby.

“I'm angry because you had to call me.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

For a moment, the noise of the lobby seemed distant.

She remembered coming to this theater as a little girl. Her father used to hold her hand as they walked beneath the golden chandeliers. He would buy her a small box of chocolate and let her choose the seat with the best view.

Back then, she had believed the entire building was magical.

Now she was standing in the same lobby with a swollen cheek and a frightened newborn.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Why did she hate me so much?””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

Then he turned toward Evelyn.

“But I intend to find out.””

A moment later, a man in a navy suit hurried down the staircase.

Thomas Reed.

He was breathing heavily.

“Richard, I'm here. What's going on?””

Richard pointed toward Vanessa.

“Look at her face.””

Thomas stopped.

His eyes moved from Vanessa's cheek to Noah, then to Evelyn.

“What happened?””

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Thomas, thank goodness. There has been an unfortunate incident. This woman refused to follow entrance instructions, and things escalated.””

Thomas looked at Richard.

“Is that true?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his folder and removed another document.

“This is the invitation list for tonight's performance.””

He placed it in Thomas's hands.

“Read the name at the top.””

Thomas glanced down.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he froze.

Because Vanessa's name wasn't the only one on that list.

And beside her name was a second designation that Evelyn had never bothered to check.

*SPECIAL GUEST — BOARD OF DIRECTORS FAMILY EVENT.*

Thomas slowly raised his eyes.

“Evelyn,” he said, “did you actually verify her invitation?””

Evelyn's voice became smaller.

“I didn't think it was necessary.””

Thomas looked at Richard.

“There's something else you need to know.””

Richard's eyebrows drew together.

“What?””

Thomas glanced toward Daniel.

Then back at the owner.

“The incident isn't the only problem tonight.””

He lowered his voice.

“There's a reason Evelyn has been so desperate to keep certain people away from the executive section.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What reason?””

Thomas opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, Daniel's phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

And quickly turned it facedown.

Richard noticed.

“Daniel.””

The assistant went rigid.

“Sir?””

“Who is calling you?””

“No one important.””

Richard held out his hand.

“Let me see.””

May you like

Daniel hesitated.

And that hesitation told Richard more than the phone ever could.
