Chapter 6: The Brother Behind the Betrayal
“Marcus?””
Richard repeated the name.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
On the other end of the phone, his younger brother gave a quiet laugh.
“Hello, Richard.””
Richard stared at the window.
For years, he had imagined what he would say if Marcus ever called again.
He had never imagined the first conversation would happen while his daughter sat nearby with a newborn in her arms.
“What are you doing with my daughter's name on a forged document?””
Marcus sighed.
“You always did like making things sound dramatic.””
“Answer the question.””
“I am trying to protect the family business.””
Richard laughed once.
“By stealing from your niece?””
“By correcting a mistake our father made.””
Vanessa looked up.
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Don't bring Dad into this.””
“Why not? He created the trust. He divided the property. He gave you control of the theater and gave Vanessa a voting interest she doesn't even understand.””
Richard glanced at his daughter.
“She's entitled to what her grandfather left her.””
Marcus's voice sharpened.
“She has a newborn and a life of her own. What does she need with a theater?””
Vanessa slowly stood.
“Excuse me?””
Richard looked at her.
She shook her head.
“Put him on speaker.””
Richard hesitated.
Then he tapped the screen.
“You're on speaker.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“This is Vanessa.””
There was a pause.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
She looked confused.
“Don't call me that.””
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
Marcus continued.
“I remember you as a little girl. You used to run around this theater with your grandfather.””
Vanessa's expression softened for a moment.
Then she remembered the document.
“You remember me, but you didn't have a problem using my signature?””
Marcus sighed.
“I never wanted things to happen this way.””
“You knew about the slap?””
Silence.
Vanessa repeated herself.
“Did you know they were going to throw me out?””
Marcus finally answered.
“I told Evelyn to prevent unnecessary complications.””
Vanessa stared at the phone.
“Did you tell her to hit me?””
“No.””
“But you told her to keep me away.””
“Because your presence could have disrupted the negotiations.””
Vanessa looked down at Noah.
Then back at the phone.
“My three-week-old son was in my arms.””
Marcus didn't respond.
Richard took the phone.
“Listen carefully. You're going to stop contacting my daughter.””
Marcus laughed.
“You still think you can order everybody around.””
“I can protect my family.””
“You couldn't even protect your own marriage.””
The words landed like a slap.
Vanessa looked at her father.
Richard's face changed, but he remained silent.
Marcus continued.
“You've spent your entire life pretending you're the responsible brother. Dad trusted you with the theater. He trusted you with the business.
And what did you do? You let everything become your personal kingdom.””
Richard's voice lowered.
“I built this company from the ground up.””
“You inherited the property.””
“I worked for everything beyond it.””
“And I watched you take everything.””
Richard looked toward Margaret.
She was silently recording the call.
He nodded slightly.
“Marcus, where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because I want to have this conversation face-to-face.””
A quiet chuckle.
“Not tonight.””
The line went dead.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered, “Dad, he's your brother.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why would he do this?””
Richard sat down.
He looked older than he had twenty minutes earlier.
“Because your grandfather's will gave him less than he believed he deserved.””
Thomas cleared his throat.
“Richard, there is something else you should know.””
Richard looked up.
“Go ahead.””
“Marcus has been working with Meridian for almost a year. He approached the board about selling the property.””
Richard nodded.
“I knew that.””
“But the board rejected his proposal.””
“Why?””
“Because the trust's ownership structure made the transaction impossible without Vanessa's approval.””
Margaret opened the binder again.
“Which explains the forged transfer document.””
Vanessa held Noah closer.
“So he wanted my signature because he couldn't get the theater without it.””
“Correct,” Margaret said.
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“And you helped him.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I was promised a promotion. They said I would become operations director after the acquisition.””
Evelyn interrupted.
“Don't pretend you were forced.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You promised me twenty-five thousand dollars.””
“You accepted it.””
“Because you told me it was legitimate.””
“You're an adult, Daniel. You made your choice.””
Richard looked at both of them.
“Neither of you is leaving until legal counsel has documented your statements.””
Evelyn scoffed.
“You cannot detain employees without cause.””
Margaret responded immediately.
“Mr. Carter has not detained anyone. However, the company can restrict access to its confidential records, and we have already contacted outside counsel.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
For the first time, they seemed to understand that they were no longer in control of the situation.
A knock came at the conference room door.
Marcus, the security supervisor, entered.
“Sir, we have another problem.””
Richard looked up.
“What?””
“Someone attempted to access the executive archive remotely.””
Margaret stood.
“Who?””
Marcus handed her a printed security alert.
“The system identified an account connected to the board secretary.””
Richard frowned.
“Why would the board secretary be accessing the archive at this hour?””
Marcus shook his head.
“We don't know. But the account attempted to delete the original trust documents.””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“That's serious.””
“How serious?””
“If the originals disappear, establishing the chain of custody becomes more difficult. It doesn't invalidate the trust, but it could complicate the investigation.””
Richard stood immediately.
“Lock down the archive.””
“Already done.””
“Call the board secretary.””
Marcus hesitated.
“There's another detail.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
“The attempted deletion came from inside the theater.””
Thomas frowned.
“That's impossible. The archive is restricted to the executive floor.””
Marcus nodded.
“Exactly.””
Richard looked toward Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Both were staring at the security alert.
But neither appeared surprised.
“Who has access to the executive floor tonight?”” Richard asked.
Thomas began counting names.
“Me. Margaret. The board secretary.
You. Marcus. And one temporary administrator.””
“Name?””
Thomas checked his tablet.
Then his face went pale.
“It's not possible.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Vanessa.
“Your daughter's invitation was registered under a guest account.””
Vanessa frowned.
“So?””
Thomas swallowed.
“Someone used that guest account to access the executive archive.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Who used it?””
Thomas turned the tablet around.
The access record displayed a name.
*VANESSA CARTER — AUTHORIZED GUEST.*
Vanessa shook her head.
“I've never accessed that system.””
Margaret examined the timestamp.
“When was this?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“Two hours ago.””
Vanessa looked at her father.
“But I wasn't even here two hours ago.””
Richard stared at the record.
“Then someone used her identity.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Sir, we checked the hallway cameras. The person who accessed the archive was wearing a staff uniform.””
“Can you identify them?””
Marcus nodded.
“We have a clear image.””
He tapped the tablet.
A photograph appeared.
The person was standing outside the executive archive.
Wearing a black uniform.
Holding a security access card.
Vanessa leaned closer.
Then she gasped.
“That's impossible.””
Richard looked at her.
“What is it?””
Vanessa pointed at the screen.
“That's not a staff member.””
Thomas frowned.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I know that woman.””
The photograph showed a woman with dark hair pulled into a tight bun.
She was carrying a small leather handbag.
Vanessa looked at the image again.
Then whispered a name.
“Monique.””
Richard's expression changed.
“Your mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
Her mother, Monique Carter, had been absent from her life for nearly six years.
The woman who had walked away after the divorce.
The woman who had never visited Vanessa during her pregnancy.
The woman who had not even called after Noah was born.
And now her face was appearing on the theater's security footage.
Richard looked at the photograph.
Then at his daughter.
“Vanessa, are you absolutely sure?””
She nodded slowly.
“That's my mother.””
Margaret enlarged the image.
A small detail became visible on the access card.
It wasn't a normal employee badge.
It carried a red stripe.
A designation reserved for members of the theater's board.
Thomas stared.
“That's a board-level access card.””
Richard looked at him.
“Who issued it?””
Thomas shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then Marcus's radio crackled.
A security officer's voice came through.
“Control room to Marcus. We have a woman at the executive elevator requesting immediate access. She says she's here to see Richard Carter.””
Marcus pressed the radio.
“Name?””
The reply came immediately.
“Monique Carter.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Richard closed the binder.
“Where is she?””
“Outside the executive boardroom.””
Richard looked at his daughter.
Then at the photograph.
His voice was almost a whisper.
“Bring her down.””
A moment later, the elevator doors opened.
A woman in an elegant black coat stepped into the corridor.
She looked directly at Richard.
Then at Vanessa.
Her eyes moved to the baby.
And the first words out of her mouth were not an apology.
“Vanessa, you need to give me that child.””
Vanessa instinctively pulled Noah closer.
Richard stepped between them.
“Not one more step.””
Monique looked at him coldly.
“You don't understand what you've done.””
Richard stared at his former wife.
“Then explain it.””
Monique glanced toward Margaret's binder.
Then toward the security officers.
Finally, she looked at Vanessa.
“Because if you read the original trust agreement, you'll discover that your father isn't the only person who has been hiding something from you.””
Vanessa's heart began pounding.
Richard's face went pale.
And Monique reached into her handbag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
It showed Vanessa as a newborn.
But standing beside her in the photograph was a man Vanessa had never seen before.
