Chapter 2: The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Ten minutes passed.
Then fifteen.
Victoria had returned to the reception desk, but she kept glancing in my direction.
I remained seated on a velvet bench near the entrance.
Nobody had offered me an ice pack.
Nobody had asked whether Amara was okay.
A young employee finally approached with a bottle of water.
She looked barely twenty years old.
Her name tag read EMILY.
"Ma'am, would you like some water?""
I looked up.
"Thank you.""
She handed me the bottle, then glanced over her shoulder.
Victoria was watching.
Emily lowered her voice.
"I'm really sorry.""
I studied her face.
"Did you see what happened?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Would you be willing to tell the truth if someone asked?""
Emily looked toward Victoria again.
Her fingers tightened around her apron.
"I... I don't know.""
I understood.
People needed jobs.
People had bills.
And some managers knew exactly how to use fear to keep employees quiet.
"That's okay," I told her.
Emily looked surprised.
"You're not angry?""
"Not with you.""
She nodded and walked away.
Across the lobby, Victoria was speaking to a couple who had just arrived.
She laughed loudly, gestured toward the fireplace, and personally offered them champagne.
The same woman who had refused to help a mother with a newborn was now smiling as if nothing had happened.
Mark approached her with his tablet.
"Victoria, I checked the security cameras.""
She leaned closer.
"And?""
"The main lobby camera captured the incident.""
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"Which camera?""
"Camera seven. It covers the entrance and reception area.""
She looked toward the ceiling.
"Can you access it?""
"Yes.""
"Then delete the footage.""
Mark hesitated.
"Delete it?""
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"Don't repeat everything I say. Just handle it.""
"That could be a problem.""
She stepped closer.
"Mark, do you want to keep your position here?""
He looked down at his tablet.
"No, ma'am.""
"Then stop creating problems.""
I heard every word.
My phone was still in my hand.
I opened the voice recorder and pressed the red button.
I didn't know whether I would need the recording.
But something told me I should preserve everything.
Victoria turned and noticed me.
"Are you recording me?""
I didn't answer.
She marched toward the bench.
"Put that phone away.""
"I haven't done anything wrong.""
"You're on private property.""
"And you're on camera.""
Her face tightened.
"Are you threatening me?""
"No. I'm reminding you.""
She leaned down toward me.
"Listen carefully. I have worked in hospitality for eighteen years. I know exactly how to deal with people who come here looking for trouble.""
I looked at her.
"And I've never had a hotel manager hit me before.""
She straightened.
"Nobody believes that you were assaulted.""
I pointed to the camera above the reception desk.
"That camera might disagree.""
Victoria laughed.
"Do you honestly think anyone is going to take your word over mine?""
Before I could respond, a deep voice came from behind her.
"That depends on who is telling the truth.""
Victoria spun around.
An older Black man stood near the entrance.
He wore a charcoal overcoat, a black cashmere scarf, and polished leather shoes.
His hair was silver at the temples.
Two security officers stood behind him.
He wasn't shouting.
He wasn't running.
But the moment he entered, something about the atmosphere changed.
Victoria's face went pale.
"Dad!""
I had never been so relieved to hear that word.
He crossed the lobby in long strides.
"Danielle.""
I stood carefully, keeping Amara close.
He looked at my face.
Then at the baby.
Then at the red mark spreading across my cheek.
His expression hardened.
"Who did this?""
I pointed toward Victoria.
"She did.""
My father slowly turned.
Victoria's mouth opened.
"Mr. Brooks, I can explain.""
He didn't answer.
He removed his scarf and placed it around my shoulders.
"Are you cold, sweetheart?""
I shook my head.
"Just shaken.""
He gently touched the uninjured side of my face.
"Did she hurt the baby?""
"No. I protected her.""
He closed his eyes for a moment.
When he opened them, the warmth had disappeared.
"Where is the manager?""
Victoria stepped forward.
"I'm Victoria Harris, the general manager. There has been a misunderstanding.""
My father looked directly at her.
"Your name is Victoria Harris?""
"Yes, sir.""
"And you struck my daughter?""
She swallowed.
"She became aggressive, and I was trying to maintain order.""
I stared at her.
I couldn't believe she was still lying.
My father glanced at Mark.
"Did you witness what happened?""
Mark cleared his throat.
"Mr. Brooks, I think we should discuss this privately.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Victoria jumped in.
"Danielle entered the property without authorization. She became confrontational and refused to follow instructions.""
My father raised one hand.
"Stop.""
The single word silenced her.
He turned toward the security officer behind him.
"James, secure the lobby camera footage. All angles. Preserve the original files and create a backup.""
"Yes, sir.""
"Nobody deletes anything. Nobody edits anything. And nobody leaves until the relevant staff have been identified.""
Victoria looked confused.
"Mr. Brooks, with all due respect, you don't have the authority to—"
My father removed a small leather folder from his coat.
He opened it and placed a business card on the reception counter.
*RICHARD BROOKS FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN BROOKS HOSPITALITY GROUP*
Victoria stared at the card.
Then at him.
Then back at the card.
Her lips parted.
Mark's tablet slipped slightly in his hands.
My father spoke calmly.
"Silvercrest Mountain Lodge is part of Brooks Hospitality Group.""
Nobody moved.
He continued.
"I founded this company twenty-seven years ago. I personally approved the purchase of this property. I appointed the regional leadership. And I know every person responsible for protecting its reputation.""
Victoria's cheeks lost their color.
"Mr. Brooks, I didn't know...""
He looked at her.
"You didn't know what?""
She swallowed.
"That she was your daughter.""
The words hung in the air.
My father glanced at me.
Then back at Victoria.
"Would you have treated her differently if you had known?""
Victoria didn't answer.
"Would you have allowed her to enter the lobby? Would you have offered her assistance? Would you have spoken to her with respect?""
She lowered her eyes.
"Of course.""
My father leaned forward slightly.
"Then your problem is much bigger than my daughter.""
He turned toward the guests.
"Everyone who witnessed this incident is welcome to provide a statement. No employee will interfere with that process.""
A man near the fireplace slowly lowered his champagne glass.
The woman who had laughed earlier suddenly became very interested in her phone.
My father looked at James.
"Where is the property director?""
"On his way, sir.""
"Good.""
Victoria tried to regain control.
"Mr. Brooks, I sincerely apologize. I had no idea who Danielle was. I would never intentionally disrespect your family.""
I felt my stomach twist.
There it was.
Not an apology for slapping me.
Not an apology for frightening my baby.
An apology for getting caught.
I spoke before my father could respond.
"Victoria, if I had been wearing a designer coat, would you have treated me differently?""
She stared at me.
"Danielle, that's not what I meant.""
"If my baby had been wrapped in an expensive blanket, would you have let us sit by the fireplace?""
"Please.""
"If I had walked in with a man wearing a luxury watch, would you have assumed I belonged here?""
She looked toward Mark.
He suddenly found something fascinating on his tablet.
My father stepped between us.
"Danielle doesn't owe you another explanation.""
Then he looked at James.
"Get my daughter somewhere comfortable. Arrange medical attention for her cheek. Make sure the baby has everything she needs.""
"Yes, sir.""
I shook my head.
"I don't want to go upstairs yet.""
My father looked at me.
"Are you sure?""
I nodded.
"I want the truth to come out here. Where everybody saw what happened.""
He studied me for a moment.
Then he nodded.
"All right.""
Emily was standing behind the reception desk.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked at me, then at my father.
Finally, she stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks?""
He turned.
"Yes?""
Emily took a breath.
"I saw everything.""
Victoria snapped her head around.
"Emily, don't.""
The young employee flinched.
But my father didn't raise his voice.
"Take your time.""
Emily looked at me.
May you like
Then she said something that made Mark turn completely white.
"There's something else you should know. This isn't the first time Victoria has done something like this.""
