Chapter 8: They Forged My Signature, But They Made One Mistake

The first thing Eleanor did was photograph the forged document.

The second thing she did was call an independent forensic examiner.

The third thing she did was tell my father something none of us wanted to hear.

"The filing could temporarily complicate the company's decision-making authority.""

My father frowned.

"Can they actually take control?""

"Not permanently, but they can create confusion. If the filing is accepted provisionally, certain transactions may be delayed while the ownership dispute is reviewed.""

"Then we challenge it.""

"We will. But we need the original trust, the witness declaration, and proof that Danielle did not authorize this filing.""

I looked at my signature.

It was convincing.

Almost perfect.

Someone had copied the shape of my D, the loop in my B, even the small upward stroke I always added at the end.

But there was something wrong.

I leaned closer.

"Wait.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"What is it?""

I pointed to the bottom of the page.

"That's not how I sign my name.""

My father frowned.

"It looks like your signature.""

"It looks close. But I always write my middle initial.""

I pointed to the space between my first and last names.

"My legal signature is Danielle M. Brooks.""

Eleanor examined it.

"You're right.""

I leaned closer.

"And there's another thing.""

I pulled out my driver's license and an old bank document.

"Look at the B.""

Eleanor placed the documents side by side.

My real signature had a distinctive second loop.

The forged one didn't.

She nodded.

"That's useful.""

My father turned to James.

"Find out who submitted the filing.""

James checked his tablet.

"It came through an external legal service.""

"Which firm?""

"Westbridge Corporate Legal.""

Eleanor looked up.

"I know that firm.""

"Do you trust them?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"No. They represented Jonathan in a dispute three years ago.""

My father let out a bitter laugh.

"Of course they did.""

Eleanor called the firm.

After a brief conversation, she ended the call.

"They claim the filing was submitted with Danielle's authorization and supporting identification.""

"Whose identification?""

"They won't disclose it without a formal request.""

My father stood.

"Then we'll obtain one.""

But before Eleanor could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered.

"Danielle?""

"Who is this?""

"It's Emily.""

I sat upright.

"Emily? Are you okay?""

"I'm sorry for calling you from this number. Victoria has been trying to reach me.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"She wants me to change my statement.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"She said if I don't help her, she'll make sure I never work in hospitality again.""

I glanced at my father.

"Where are you?""

"At my apartment.""

"Are you alone?""

"Yes.""

"Don't open the door for anyone. Contact the authorities if you feel threatened.""

Emily went quiet.

Then she said:

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Mark told me where the forged document came from.""

I leaned forward.

"How does he know?""

"Because he watched Jonathan sign the original instruction.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She immediately moved closer.

I put the call on speaker.

Emily continued.

"Jonathan told Mark to use an old signature file from Danielle's corporate profile. He said the family trust documents would be easier to change if Danielle appeared to have agreed.""

My father closed his eyes.

"Who gave them access to the signature file?"" he asked.

Emily heard him.

"Thomas Reed.""

My father looked at James.

"Where is Thomas?""

James checked his phone.

"He was supposed to attend a regional meeting.""

"Has he arrived?""

"No, sir.""

Emily suddenly whispered:

"Wait. Someone is outside my apartment.""

My heart jumped.

"Emily, don't open the door.""

"I can hear them.""

A loud knock sounded through the phone.

Then a man's voice.

"Emily? Open up. We need to talk.""

She began crying.

"That's Mark.""

My father stood.

"Emily, call emergency services. Don't let him inside.""

Then the line went dead.

The next twenty minutes were unbearable.

James contacted local authorities and gave them Emily's address.

Eleanor began preparing a formal affidavit documenting the forged signature and the threats.

My father paced the room.

I sat beside Amara's bassinet, unable to stop checking my phone.

Finally, James returned.

"Mr. Brooks?""

My father turned.

"Is she safe?""

"Yes. Officers arrived before anyone entered the apartment.""

I exhaled.

"What happened?""

"Mark was outside. He claimed he wanted to speak with her about the investigation.""

"Did they arrest him?""

"No. He was questioned and released pending further investigation.""

My father nodded.

"Good. Make sure Emily has legal support.""

James hesitated.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Mark had documents in his car.""

My father waited.

"Several printed copies of the trust amendment. And a draft statement claiming Danielle voluntarily surrendered her voting rights.""

I stared at him.

"They were preparing to make me look guilty.""

James nodded.

"Yes, ma'am.""

My father looked toward Eleanor.

"How far does this go?""

She answered quietly.

"Further than we thought.""

That evening, we held a formal meeting with the independent investigators.

The lead investigator was a former financial crimes specialist named David Morgan.

He had a calm voice and a habit of studying documents for a long time before speaking.

He placed three folders on the table.

"The first contains the forged trust amendment. The second contains financial transfers. The third contains communications between the regional office and Silvercrest management.""

My father leaned forward.

"What did you find?""

David opened the first folder.

"The forged signature was created using a digital image from a corporate document dated six years ago.""

Eleanor nodded.

"That establishes a possible source.""

"Correct. We also identified the device used to prepare the amendment.""

"Whose device?"" I asked.

David looked at the page.

"Thomas Reed's company laptop.""

My father shook his head.

"Thomas.""

David continued.

"The second folder contains the financial transfers. We identified several payments from Northstar Holdings to companies associated with Victoria Harris and Mark Ellis.""

"How much?"" my father asked.

"Approximately six hundred thousand dollars over four years.""

I looked at the numbers.

"Six hundred thousand?""

David nodded.

"Some payments were classified as consulting fees. Others were listed as employee retention bonuses.""

Eleanor frowned.

"Neither recipient had an authorized consulting agreement.""

"Correct.""

My father looked at the final folder.

"And Jonathan?""

David opened it.

"His communications show repeated instructions to delay complaint investigations and redirect certain guest disputes away from corporate oversight.""

"Does he know about the payments?""

"We have evidence that he authorized at least some of them.""

My father sat back.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then David added:

"But the most important discovery concerns the original trust.""

He placed a document in front of Eleanor.

"Your wife's declaration was never legally revoked. The amendment submitted this morning is inconsistent with the original agreement.""

Eleanor examined it.

Then she smiled for the first time that day.

"This changes everything.""

My father looked at her.

"How?""

"Danielle's beneficial interest remains intact. More importantly, the trust gives her authority to appoint an independent oversight committee if there is credible evidence of misconduct.""

I frowned.

"Can I do that now?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

My father looked at me.

"That means you can help protect the properties from the people who have been abusing their positions.""

I glanced at the documents.

"I want Emily protected. I want the employees who were threatened to be heard. And I want the guests who filed complaints to receive answers.""

David nodded.

"Those requests can be included in the investigation's recommendations.""

I looked at my father.

"And Victoria?""

He didn't hesitate.

"She will face the consequences of what the evidence establishes.""

I nodded.

That was all I wanted.

Not revenge.

Accountability.

At eleven that night, Eleanor received a call from the state filing office.

She listened carefully.

Then she placed the call on speaker.

A clerk explained that the forged amendment had been flagged because the signature verification failed.

The filing was suspended.

The original trust remained active.

My father looked at me.

"Your mother protected you.""

I smiled through tears.

"Even after all these years.""

Eleanor gathered the documents.

"There's one more thing. The trust contains an additional provision.""

"What provision?"" I asked.

"Your mother required that any attempt to falsify your signature or remove your voting rights automatically trigger an independent review of all historical transfers.""

My father stared.

"She anticipated this.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked down at the document.

The very act of trying to steal my inheritance had activated the mechanism that could expose the entire scheme.

They had forged my signature.

They had threatened my daughter.

They had tried to erase my mother's final protection.

And in doing so, they had opened the door to an investigation they could no longer control.

Then David's phone rang.

He listened for a few seconds.

His expression changed.

"Mr. Brooks, we've located the original source of the forged filing.""

My father leaned forward.

"Where?""

David looked at me.

"Inside Silvercrest's executive office.""

"Who submitted it?""

David paused.

Then he answered.

"Thomas Reed.""

My father nodded slowly.

"Bring him in.""

David shook his head.

"We can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because Thomas has already left the country.""

I stared.

"What?""

"He boarded an international flight four hours ago.""

My father stood.

"Where is he going?""

David checked the record.

Then he looked up.

"London.""

Eleanor closed her folder.

"He's running.""

But I noticed something else.

The flight manifest listed two passengers traveling under the same booking.

Thomas Reed.

And Victoria Harris.

I looked at my father.

"Why would they leave together?""

He didn't answer.

Then David received another notification.

He read it.

And suddenly, his face became completely serious.

"Mr. Brooks, there's a third passenger.""

My father waited.

David turned the screen toward us.

May you like

The third passenger's name was:

*JONATHAN BROOKS.*
