Chapter 4: The Man Who Signed Her Contract

Danielle stared at her father.

“Someone you trusted?””

Robert Brooks nodded slowly.

“That's right.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, Thomas Reynolds approached with a phone pressed against his ear.

“Mr. Brooks, I think you need to see this.””

Robert turned.

“What happened?””

“Mr. Richard Whitmore is on his way to the lounge.””

The name meant nothing to Danielle.

But it clearly meant something to her father.

Robert's jaw tightened.

“Richard is coming here?””

“Yes. He says he's been informed about the incident and wants to handle it personally.””

Robert glanced at Victoria.

For the first time since his arrival, she seemed to regain a little confidence.

“Mr. Whitmore?”” she asked.

Thomas nodded.

Victoria straightened her pink blazer and adjusted her nameplate.

“Finally. Someone who understands how this operation works.””

Danielle watched her.

Only minutes earlier, Victoria had been terrified.

Now she was smiling again.

“Who is Richard Whitmore?”” Danielle whispered.

Robert pulled a chair closer.

“He's the regional operations director responsible for overseeing several premium airport facilities. I appointed him to that position four years ago.””

“And he hired Victoria?””

“He approved her management contract.””

Danielle looked toward the woman.

“Does he know what she did?””

“He knows what she wants him to believe.””

Robert's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen, then slipped it back into his pocket.

“There's something else you should know. Richard and I have known each other for nearly twenty years. We built this business together.””

Danielle frowned.

“Then why would he protect someone who treats passengers like that?””

Robert looked through the glass doors.

“That's what we're about to find out.””

Twenty minutes later, Danielle sat in a quiet medical consultation room near the airport's executive terminal.

Amara was asleep against her chest.

A nurse had examined Danielle's cheek and checked her shoulder. Fortunately, neither she nor the baby appeared to have sustained a serious injury.

Still, the nurse recommended a follow-up examination.

Robert stood beside the window, speaking quietly with David Coleman.

“Have you secured the recordings?”” Robert asked.

“Yes. We have the entrance camera, the reception camera, and two interior angles. The original files are preserved.””

“Audio?””

“The reception microphone captured part of the conversation. We're checking the remaining recordings.””

“Good. What about the employee messages?””

“Emily provided the screenshots. We're preserving the original records through the company's compliance process.””

Robert nodded.

“Make sure nobody edits anything.””

David lowered his voice.

“There's another concern. Someone attempted to access the lounge's camera system after we secured the footage.””

Robert turned.

“Who?””

“We're tracing the access request. It came from an internal management account.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“Richard?””

“We don't know yet.””

A knock interrupted them.

Thomas Reynolds entered.

“Mr. Brooks, Mr. Whitmore has arrived.””

Robert looked at Danielle.

“Do you want me to handle this?””

She adjusted the blanket around Amara.

“No, Daddy. I want to hear what he says.””

Robert studied her face.

Then he nodded.

“All right.””

Richard Whitmore entered the room wearing a navy suit and a silver tie.

He was in his late fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and a confident smile.

“Robert!””

He extended his hand.

Robert didn't take it.

Richard's smile faltered.

“What's going on here? I've heard there was some kind of unfortunate misunderstanding.””

Danielle looked at him.

“A misunderstanding?””

Richard turned toward her.

“Danielle, isn't it? I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience.””

She stared at him.

“Did you watch the video?””

Richard hesitated.

“I've received an initial report.””

“Did you watch it?””

“I haven't seen the full recording.””

“Then why are you calling it a misunderstanding?””

Richard glanced at Robert.

“Let's not make this more difficult than it needs to be.””

Robert folded his arms.

“Richard, my daughter was slapped while holding her newborn. Your manager then attempted to throw her out. Your assistant supervisor watched and did nothing.””

Richard sighed.

“Victoria has been under considerable pressure lately. We have been dealing with staffing shortages, increased passenger volume, and service complaints.””

Danielle shook her head.

“So that's why she hit me?””

“No, of course not.””

“Then why are you explaining her workload?””

Richard's expression tightened.

“I'm trying to provide context.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Context doesn't excuse assault.””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Robert, we've known each other for a long time. We should discuss this privately.””

Robert looked at him.

“You had twenty minutes to discuss it privately. Instead, you came in here prepared to defend someone who hasn't even apologized.””

Richard glanced toward Danielle.

“Victoria tells me she was attempting to maintain lounge standards.””

Danielle let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Did she also tell you I had a valid boarding pass?””

Richard said nothing.

“Did she tell you I had an approved lounge reservation?””

Still nothing.

“Did she tell you that I was holding my newborn when she slapped me?””

Richard finally looked uncomfortable.

“I'm aware of the allegations.””

“Allegations?”” Danielle repeated.

She carefully shifted Amara.

“There's a difference between an allegation and what happened in front of twenty witnesses.””

Richard turned toward Thomas.

“Where is Victoria?””

Thomas looked at Robert before answering.

“She is still in the lounge.””

“Bring her here.””

Robert immediately objected.

“No.””

Richard raised his eyebrows.

“No?””

“You don't get to turn this into a private meeting where everyone is pressured into changing their statements.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Robert, I'm responsible for regional operations.””

“And I'm the chairman of the company that owns the operating contract.””

The room went silent.

Richard stared at him.

For the first time, his confidence seemed uncertain.

Robert continued.

“Your responsibility is to investigate misconduct, not bury it.””

Richard straightened his tie.

“Are you suggesting I've done something improper?””

“I'm asking why you're defending someone before reviewing the evidence.””

Richard didn't answer.

Then David entered with a tablet.

“Mr. Brooks, we've recovered another internal communication.””

Robert took the tablet.

“What is it?””

“A message from Richard Whitmore to Victoria Hayes, sent six weeks ago.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“That's a confidential management communication.””

David held the tablet closer to Robert.

“It's relevant to the investigation.””

Robert read the message.

His face became still.

The message was short.

Continue applying discretion to passenger access. We cannot allow the premium lounge experience to be diluted. If complaints arise, resolve them at your level before escalating.

Below it was Victoria's response.

Understood. I'll keep things under control.

Robert slowly lowered the tablet.

“Richard.””

The older man looked away.

“Those messages don't establish wrongdoing.””

“Then explain them.””

“They were about operational standards.””

“Which standards?””

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Robert, you're taking this personally.””

Robert stared at him.

“My daughter was assaulted. Of course I'm taking it personally.””

Richard sighed.

“Fine. I'll conduct a full review.””

“No.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

“You're not conducting this investigation.””

Robert turned toward David.

“Notify compliance. I want an independent review of Richard's communications, Victoria's personnel decisions, and every passenger complaint handled by this facility.””

David nodded.

Richard's expression changed completely.

“You can't remove me from the process without cause.””

Robert held his gaze.

“I just gave you cause.””

Back in the lounge, Victoria was pacing behind the reception desk.

Mark stood nearby, repeatedly checking his phone.

“Have you heard anything?”” Victoria asked.

Mark shook his head.

“Nothing.””

“Where is Richard?””

“I don't know.””

Victoria lowered her voice.

“Tell me you didn't give them anything.””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

“I answered their questions.””

“What questions?””

“About what happened.””

Victoria stared at him.

“You told them I slapped her?””

Mark didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

“You had better be careful, Mark. You know how much I have done for you.””

He finally looked up.

“I didn't make you hit her.””

Victoria's face twisted.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Before she could respond, the lounge doors opened.

Two compliance officers entered.

One carried a folder.

The other held a company tablet.

“Ms. Hayes?””

Victoria turned.

“Yes?””

“We need you to accompany us to an administrative meeting.””

“Why?””

“Your management duties are being temporarily suspended pending an investigation.””

Victoria laughed.

“You can't be serious.””

The officer handed her a written notice.

“Your access credentials have also been placed on temporary hold.””

She stared at the document.

Then she looked toward Mark.

He stood perfectly still.

“You're going to let them do this?”” she demanded.

Mark lowered his eyes.

Victoria crumpled the paper.

“This is because of that woman.””

The compliance officer remained calm.

“No, Ms. Hayes. This is because of the documented incident.””

As they escorted her toward the staff corridor, her phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

It was from Richard Whitmore.

Do not speak to anyone until I contact you.

Victoria read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

And whatever you do, do not mention the previous passenger complaints.

Her fingers began to tremble.

Because suddenly, she understood something.

Richard wasn't trying to protect her.

He was trying to protect himself.

And if the investigation continued, she might be the only person left carrying the blame.

Across the airport, Robert stood beside Danielle's chair.

“I'm going to have to make another call.””

Danielle looked up.

“Who?””

“The board's independent compliance chair.””

“Why?””

Robert glanced at the tablet.

“Because the messages we found suggest this problem goes much further than one manager.””

He paused.

“And I have a feeling Richard isn't the only person who knows about it.””

Danielle looked down at her sleeping daughter.

Then she asked the question that would change everything.

“Daddy, how many other mothers have they treated like this?””

Robert didn't answer immediately.

Because David had just sent him a preliminary report.
