Chapter 7: The Man Standing Behind the Chairman
Robert Brooks stared at the photograph on the conference room screen.
It showed him sitting at his desk six months earlier, reviewing documents with his reading glasses halfway down his nose.
The photograph had been taken through the glass wall of his executive office.
Behind him stood a man wearing a dark suit.
The man's face was partially reflected in the glass, but there was no mistaking his identity.
Robert leaned closer.
“Enlarge the image.””
David Coleman adjusted the display.
The man's face became clearer.
Danielle looked at the screen.
“Daddy…”
Robert didn't respond.
She recognized the man, too.
It was Jonathan Pierce, Robert's longtime executive assistant.
Jonathan had worked beside her father for eleven years. He had organized family events, attended business dinners, and once spent an entire night at the hospital when Robert had undergone emergency surgery.
Danielle remembered him bringing flowers to her mother's funeral.
He had always been kind.
At least, she had thought so.
“Why would Jonathan be in that photograph?”” Danielle asked.
Robert slowly removed his glasses.
“Because he was supposed to be working.””
David opened the photograph's metadata.
“The image was taken from an internal security camera. It was exported from the executive office surveillance system.””
Robert looked up.
“Who had access?””
“Three people. Your office administrator, Jonathan Pierce, and the head of executive facilities.””
“Get Jonathan here.””
Patricia Lewis raised her hand.
“Mr. Brooks, I recommend we don't confront him until we've secured the remaining records.””
Robert looked at her.
“Someone has been monitoring my daughter's movements. Someone has been manipulating internal reports. And someone has photographed me in my own office.””
“I understand.””
“Then you understand why I want answers.””
Patricia remained calm.
“We'll obtain them. But if we approach him prematurely, we risk losing evidence.””
Robert took a breath.
“Fine. Secure everything.””
David immediately contacted the technical security team.
But before he could finish his call, Robert's phone rang.
Jonathan Pierce.
Robert looked at the screen.
Nobody spoke.
He answered.
“Jonathan.””
“Good morning, sir.””
Jonathan's voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“I understand there's been a situation at the Atlanta facility.””
Robert looked toward David.
“What have you heard?””
“Only that Danielle experienced some difficulty with the lounge staff. I wanted to check whether everything was all right.””
Robert's fingers tightened around the phone.
“You've seen the report?””
“Not personally.””
“Then how do you know what happened?””
A pause.
“I received a call from Richard Whitmore.””
Robert exchanged a glance with Patricia.
“What did Richard tell you?””
“He said the situation might become a public relations issue.””
Robert stared at the photograph.
“Jonathan, do you recognize the man standing behind me in this picture?””
Silence.
Then Jonathan answered.
“I'd need to see it.””
“It's a photograph taken inside my office six months ago.””
“I see.””
“Why were you standing behind me?””
Another pause.
“I don't remember the exact day, sir.””
Robert lowered his voice.
“Come to the conference room.””
“Of course.””
“And Jonathan?””
“Yes?””
“Bring every document relating to Project Prestige.””
The call ended.
Danielle watched her father.
“Do you think he did it?””
Robert looked at the photograph again.
“I don't know.””
“Do you trust him?””
Robert was quiet for several seconds.
“I used to.””
At 11:30 a.m., Jonathan Pierce arrived.
He entered the conference room carrying a leather briefcase.
His expression was composed, but his eyes moved quickly around the room.
He noticed Patricia.
He noticed David.
Then he noticed Danielle holding Amara.
“Danielle,” he said warmly.
“I'm glad you're feeling better.””
She nodded.
“Thank you.””
Jonathan placed his briefcase on the table.
“Robert, I understand you're reviewing some operational concerns.””
Robert didn't invite him to sit.
“Do you know what Project Prestige is?””
Jonathan nodded.
“It was an initiative developed by regional operations.””
“Who gave you access to the documents?””
“Richard sent several updates to the executive office.””
“Did you review them?””
“Some of them.””
Robert pointed toward the screen.
“Then explain this.””
The photograph appeared.
Jonathan looked at it.
For half a second, his expression changed.
Then he smiled faintly.
“That's an old security image.””
“Why were you standing behind me?””
“I was delivering a document.””
“Which document?””
“I don't remember.””
Robert placed another page on the table.
“Your identification number appears in the access logs for Danielle's flight reservation.””
Jonathan looked down.
“That doesn't necessarily mean I accessed her information.””
Patricia leaned forward.
“Your credentials were used to open the reservation file at 9:14 a.m. on October thirtieth.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I may have been logged into the administrative system.””
“From where?”” Patricia asked.
“My office.””
“Were you the person using the account?””
Jonathan looked at Robert.
“Sir, I don't believe this conversation is appropriate without legal representation.””
Robert nodded.
“You're entitled to representation.””
Jonathan reached for his briefcase.
But David spoke.
“Before you leave, we need to inform you that your system access has been suspended pending the investigation.””
Jonathan stopped.
“What?””
“Your company credentials have been temporarily disabled.””
Jonathan looked directly at Robert.
“Are you suspending me?””
“I'm protecting the evidence.””
Jonathan's face hardened.
“After eleven years?””
Robert didn't look away.
“After what happened to my daughter, I won't ignore anything.””
Jonathan closed his briefcase.
“Then perhaps you should know something before you make your decision.””
Robert waited.
Jonathan leaned forward.
“Richard Whitmore wasn't acting alone.””
The room went still.
“Who else was involved?”” Patricia asked.
Jonathan glanced at her.
“I can't discuss that without legal counsel.””
Robert stepped closer.
“You just brought it up. Finish the sentence.””
Jonathan looked at Danielle.
Then he looked back at Robert.
“Someone in the board's executive committee authorized the program.””
“Who?””
Jonathan swallowed.
“Eleanor Grant wasn't the highest-ranking person involved.””
Robert felt his stomach tighten.
“Who was?””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I won't say another word without counsel.””
He picked up his briefcase.
As he reached the door, Danielle spoke.
“Jonathan?””
He stopped.
“Why did you let them put my name on that list?””
He turned slowly.
For the first time, his face showed something that looked like regret.
“I didn't know they would touch you.””
Danielle stared at him.
“You knew they were watching me?””
Jonathan said nothing.
“Did you know they were treating other passengers that way?””
His eyes dropped.
That was answer enough.
Jonathan walked out.
Five minutes later, David received an alert.
Someone had attempted to access the executive office document archive using Jonathan's credentials.
The access request had been blocked.
David looked at Robert.
“Sir, somebody is trying to retrieve files from the system.””
“Jonathan?””
“We can't confirm who is physically using the account.””
Robert looked toward the door.
“Find out.””
Patricia opened the security logs.
“There is a second account involved.””
“Whose?””
She read the name.
Then she looked at Robert.
“Eleanor Grant.””
Robert slowly sat down.
He had known Eleanor for almost fifteen years.
She had stood beside him when his company nearly collapsed during a financial crisis.
She had helped negotiate the contracts that allowed Brooks Global Aviation to expand into major international airports.
He had trusted her with the company's future.
And now her credentials were appearing in an unauthorized access attempt.
Danielle adjusted Amara's blanket.
“Daddy, what if everyone around you knew?””
Robert looked at his daughter.
“Then I'll find out who did.””
At 1:15 p.m., the independent compliance team discovered another document.
It was a financial spreadsheet.
The file listed payments made to regional lounge managers under a category called Service Excellence Incentives.
Victoria Hayes had received three payments over the previous year.
Richard Whitmore had approved each one.
But the most troubling entry was a separate payment made to an outside consulting company.
The company was called Prestige Guest Solutions.
Its registered director was listed as a woman named Melissa Pierce.
Jonathan Pierce's wife.
Patricia turned the screen toward Robert.
“Mr. Brooks, we need to investigate a potential conflict of interest.””
Robert stared at the spreadsheet.
“How much money?””
“Approximately $2.4 million in payments over fourteen months.””
Danielle looked shocked.
“Two million dollars?””
Patricia nodded.
“The payments were authorized as consulting fees.””
“Did the company provide services?”” Robert asked.
“We haven't found sufficient documentation.””
David opened another file.
“There are also payments to several regional managers through an affiliated vendor.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Victoria?””
“Possibly. We need to trace the transfers.””
He stood.
“Freeze every pending payment connected to that vendor. Notify legal and the audit committee.””
Patricia nodded.
Then she added something that made him stop.
“There is one more document.””
She placed a printed page on the table.
It was a draft proposal.
The title read:
*CONTINGENCY PLAN — EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TRANSITION.*
Robert read the first paragraph.
The proposal described a plan to remove him from active management under the pretext of an emergency governance review.
Danielle looked at him.
“Daddy?””
He continued reading.
The document referenced a series of internal complaints, executive security concerns, and allegations of inappropriate interference in regional operations.
Then he reached the final section.
It proposed that Richard Whitmore assume temporary operational control while Robert's authority was reviewed.
Robert slowly lowered the paper.
“Who drafted this?””
Patricia checked the file properties.
“Jonathan Pierce created the first version.””
Robert looked at the photograph again.
The man standing behind him.
The person who had been trusted with his schedule, his office, and his family.
Jonathan hadn't simply been helping Richard.
He might have been helping remove Robert from the company.
And Danielle's name had appeared in the plan as a potential pressure point.
At 2:05 p.m., Robert received a call from an unknown number.
He answered.
“Robert Brooks.””
A man's voice came through.
“Mr. Brooks, my name is Daniel Harris. I was the manager of the Charlotte Executive Lounge until last month.””
Robert sat straighter.
“How can I help you?””
“I saw the incident involving your daughter. Someone shared the video with me.””
Robert looked at Danielle.
“What do you know about Project Prestige?””
The man exhaled.
“More than I wanted to.””
“Tell me.””
“I was asked to remove passengers who didn't fit the lounge's preferred image. I refused.””
“What happened?””
“I was told my performance was under review. Two weeks later, I was dismissed.””
Robert's jaw tightened.
“Do you have documentation?””
“Yes. Emails, schedules, and messages from regional management.””
“Can you send them to our independent compliance team?””
“I can.””
There was a pause.
Then Daniel added:
“Mr. Brooks, there's something else. Richard wasn't just managing the program. He was collecting information about passengers connected to the company's major shareholders.””
Robert frowned.
“Why?””
“So he could identify people who might create problems for the executive team.””
Robert looked at the photograph of Danielle.
“Did you ever see my daughter's name?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In a special list circulated to regional managers.””
Robert's stomach tightened.
“What did it say?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“It said she was not to be given direct access to senior management without prior authorization.””
Robert slowly closed his eyes.
Then Daniel said the words that changed the investigation completely.
“Mr. Brooks, your daughter wasn't accidentally targeted at that lounge.””
He paused.
“Someone wanted her humiliated before she could tell you something.””
Robert stared at Danielle.
“What could she possibly tell me?””
Daniel answered.
“That's what I think you need to ask your executive assistant.””
The call ended.
Robert looked toward David.
“Find Jonathan.””
David nodded.
But before he could move, Patricia's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Then her face went pale.
“What happened?”” Robert demanded.
Patricia covered the phone.
“Jonathan Pierce has left the airport.””
“Where is he going?””
Patricia listened again.
“He's boarding a private aircraft.””
Robert's eyes narrowed.
“Destination?””
Patricia looked up.
“Unknown.””
Then another message appeared on David's screen.
Jonathan had sent a final email to the executive office.
The subject line was:
*THE REAL REASON DANIELLE WAS TARGETED.*
Robert opened it.
There were only two sentences.
Your daughter discovered the transfer before we could stop her.
Ask her what she remembers about her mother's final business meeting.
Robert went completely still.
Danielle stared at him.
“My mother?””
May you like
Robert slowly turned toward his daughter.
And for the first time since the investigation began, he looked genuinely frightened.
