Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Club's Name

The entire foyer seemed to shrink when Richard Carter walked toward his daughter.

He didn't shout.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He simply removed his black overcoat, handed it to his security officer, and knelt beside Danielle.

“Let me see you, sweetheart.””

Danielle tried to smile.

“Hi, Daddy.””

Richard gently touched the side of her face without pressing against the swelling.

His jaw tightened.

“Did she do this?””

Danielle nodded.

Richard looked at the baby.

“And this is my granddaughter?””

Danielle adjusted the white blanket.

“Yes. This is little Amara.””

Richard's expression softened.

“Hello, beautiful girl.””

He brushed one tiny finger against Amara's hand.

The baby stopped crying for a moment.

Then Richard looked at his daughter again.

“Why are you sitting on the floor?””

Danielle swallowed.

“They wouldn't let me get up without security escorting me out.””

Richard slowly stood.

He turned toward Evelyn.

“Who are you?””

Evelyn blinked.

“Mr. Carter, I'm Evelyn Whitmore. I'm the general manager here.””

“I know your name. I'm asking who you are.””

Evelyn straightened her pink blazer.

“I manage the daily operations of Ashford Country Club.””

“And you struck my daughter?””

Evelyn's mouth opened.

“Sir, there has been a misunderstanding.””

Richard glanced at Danielle's cheek.

“Is that what we're calling it?””

“Your daughter entered a restricted area without proper authorization.””

Richard looked at the torn invitation on the marble floor.

He pointed toward it.

“What is that?””

Evelyn followed his gaze.

“Just a document she presented. It wasn't verified.””

Richard stepped over and picked up the two pieces.

He examined the club seal.

Then he looked at the signature.

His expression became unreadable.

“Did you tear this?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“I removed an invalid document.””

“Did you tear it?””

“I did.””

Richard carefully placed the pieces together.

“Interesting.””

Brandon shifted his weight.

“Mr. Carter, I think we should all calm down.””

Richard turned toward him.

“And you are?””

“Brandon Mills. Assistant manager.””

“Were you present when my daughter was struck?””

Brandon glanced at Evelyn.

“I arrived after the initial confrontation.””

“That wasn't my question.””

Brandon cleared his throat.

“I saw what happened.””

Richard stared at him.

“And what did you do?””

“I was attempting to maintain order.””

“Did you call medical assistance?””

“No, sir.””

“Did you ask whether the baby was hurt?””

Brandon looked down.

“No.””

“Did you prevent my daughter from leaving?””

Brandon shifted again.

“I was following management instructions.””

Richard nodded once.

“Thank you. That's all I needed to hear.””

Behind him, one of the security officers quietly approached Danielle.

“Ma'am, would you like medical assistance?””

“Yes, please,” Danielle answered.

“Just to check the baby and my face.””

“Of course.””

Evelyn suddenly found her voice.

“Mr. Carter, I understand you're upset, but you need to understand the situation from our side. We've had incidents involving unauthorized guests before.””

Richard looked at her.

“Unauthorized guests?””

“Yes. People attempting to gain access by claiming they know members.””

“And you decided my daughter was one of them?””

“She didn't look like a member.””

The words escaped before Evelyn could stop herself.

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Didn't look like a member?””

Evelyn realized her mistake.

“I meant she wasn't dressed appropriately for the occasion.””

Richard looked at Danielle's beige dress.

Then at her handbag.

Then at the baby in her arms.

“Tell me something, Ms. Whitmore. What exactly does a mother holding her newborn need to wear before you consider her worthy of entering this building?””

Evelyn's cheeks flushed.

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then explain what you meant.””

She glanced toward the guests.

“I'm responsible for protecting the club's atmosphere.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

He turned toward the security officers.

“Please preserve every camera recording from the last hour. The entrance, the foyer, the reception desk, and the hallway outside this room.””

One officer immediately reached for his radio.

“Yes, sir.””

Richard continued.

“I want the original footage preserved. No edits. No deletions. No exceptions.””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“There's no need to involve the board over a misunderstanding.””

Richard looked at her.

“Who said anything about a misunderstanding?””

She swallowed.

“Mr. Carter, I've worked here for eleven years.””

“And my daughter has been part of this club's family since before you started working here.””

Evelyn frowned.

“What?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he looked toward the silver-haired gentleman near the staircase.

“Arthur, perhaps you can explain something to me.””

Arthur Bell, the club's current president, stood stiffly.

“Richard, let's take this into the office.””

“No. I'd rather everyone hear it.””

Arthur looked uncomfortable.

Several guests began whispering.

Richard pointed to Danielle.

“Do you recognize this woman?””

Arthur looked at her.

Then his eyes moved toward the baby.

His face softened.

“Danielle?””

She gave him a small, tired smile.

“Hello, Mr. Bell.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“I haven't seen you since your graduation.””

“I know. It's been a while.””

He looked at Richard.

“Why didn't anyone tell us she was coming?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“She was invited.””

Arthur nodded.

“Of course she was.””

Evelyn looked between them.

“Wait. You know her?””

Arthur stared at Evelyn.

“She's Richard Carter's daughter.””

The room went quiet.

A guest lowered her champagne glass.

Another slowly put her phone away.

Brandon looked as though someone had pulled the floor from beneath him.

Evelyn gave a nervous laugh.

“I understand that, but—”

Arthur interrupted.

“Richard isn't just a member, Evelyn.””

He turned toward the guests.

“Mr. Carter is the founder of the Carter Hospitality Group. His family financed the restoration of this entire property.””

Richard said nothing.

Arthur continued.

“He personally funded the new clubhouse, the swimming complex, and the charitable foundation that has supported this club for nearly fifteen years.””

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.””

Evelyn's face lost color.

Brandon stared at Richard.

Richard glanced toward Arthur.

“That's enough.””

Arthur lowered his voice.

“I'm sorry, Richard.””

Richard looked around.

“Don't apologize to me.””

He pointed toward Danielle.

“Apologize to the person you allowed to be treated like this.””

Arthur immediately approached her.

“Danielle, I'm deeply sorry. This should never have happened.””

Danielle nodded.

“Thank you.””

Richard turned toward the crowd.

“And for those of you who found this entertaining, I hope you enjoyed the show.””

A woman in a cream dress looked down.

Richard recognized her.

“Margaret, weren't you the one who laughed?””

Margaret stiffened.

“I didn't know who she was.””

Richard's expression barely changed.

“Would that have made the slap acceptable if she were someone else?””

Margaret had no answer.

Another guest stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, I think emotions got out of control.””

Richard turned toward him.

“Did you see her fall?””

The man nodded reluctantly.

“And did you help?””

“No.””

“Then perhaps you should save your explanation.””

Danielle felt her eyes filling again.

She had imagined her father arriving.

She had imagined him shouting, confronting Evelyn, and making everyone regret what they had done.

But seeing him stand there, calm and protective, made something inside her finally break.

“Daddy?””

Richard immediately turned.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“I don't want my baby growing up thinking people can treat her mother this way.””

Richard crouched beside her.

“She won't.””

He looked into his daughter's eyes.

“And nobody in this building is going to tell you that you don't belong.””

The medical attendant arrived with a small examination kit.

After checking Danielle's cheek and the baby's condition, she reassured Richard that Amara appeared unharmed, though Danielle was advised to have her face examined more thoroughly.

Richard thanked her.

Then he looked toward the security officer.

“Have you secured the recordings?””

“Yes, sir. We're coordinating with the technical department.””

“Good.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, before you make any decisions, I would like the opportunity to explain my side privately.””

Richard looked at her.

“You had that opportunity when my daughter asked you to read her invitation.””

Evelyn pressed her lips together.

“I was trying to protect the club.””

“Then you should have protected the people inside it.””

He turned toward Arthur.

“I want an emergency board meeting today.””

Arthur hesitated.

“Today?””

“Today.””

“Richard, some of the board members are out of town.””

“Then connect them by video.””

Arthur nodded.

“Understood.””

Evelyn's hands began trembling.

“Surely we can handle this internally.””

Richard looked at her for several seconds.

“That's exactly what I intend to do.””

She exhaled with relief.

Then he added:

“Starting with an independent investigation.””

Her relief vanished.

Richard's security officer approached with a tablet.

“Sir, there's something you should see.””

Richard looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

The officer lowered his voice.

“We reviewed the reception footage from earlier this morning. This wasn't the first time Ms. Whitmore instructed staff to deny your daughter entry.””

Richard's eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“What do you mean?””

The officer hesitated.

“Sir, someone had already removed Danielle Carter's name from the guest list yesterday.””

Richard looked at the torn invitation in his hand.

“Who authorized that?””

The officer turned the tablet around.

A name appeared beside the deletion request.

It wasn't Evelyn Whitmore.

It was Arthur Bell.

May you like

The club president.

And Richard slowly turned toward the man who had just apologized to his daughter.
