Chapter 7: The Night They Tried to Erase
For several seconds, Danielle couldn't move.
Her mother stood outside the country club.
Her uncle stood beside her.
And somewhere between those two facts was a memory Danielle had spent three years believing she didn't have.
“I was in the car?”” she whispered.
Richard looked at Eleanor through the glass.
“Eleanor, what are you talking about?””
His wife pressed the phone against her ear.
“Richard, please. We don't have much time.””
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Daniel stepped toward the SUV.
Eleanor immediately backed away.
“Don't let him near Danielle.””
Richard turned toward the security officer.
“Get them inside. Now.””
The officer touched his radio.
Two security personnel rushed toward the entrance.
But Daniel saw them coming.
He grabbed Eleanor's arm.
She jerked away.
“Don't touch me!””
Danielle screamed.
“Uncle Daniel, let her go!””
Daniel looked up.
For the first time, he seemed to notice Danielle watching him.
His expression changed.
Not into surprise.
Into recognition.
Then he smiled.
It was a small, familiar smile.
The same one he had worn at Eleanor's funeral.
“Danielle,” he called through the glass.
“You've grown up.””
Richard moved in front of his daughter.
“Stay away from my family.””
Daniel released Eleanor.
“Richard, you're making a terrible mistake.””
“You've got about five seconds to explain why my wife was declared dead.””
Daniel looked toward the security officers.
Then he glanced at Eleanor.
“Ask her why she disappeared.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“Of course. That's always been your favorite trick.””
Richard stepped toward the doors.
“Get him inside.””
Two security officers approached Daniel.
He didn't resist.
Instead, he calmly raised both hands.
“I'll come willingly.””
Eleanor grabbed Richard's attention.
“Don't separate us.””
Richard turned.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knows where the original evidence is.””
Daniel's smile vanished.
That was the first time Richard had seen his brother genuinely afraid.
“What evidence?”” Richard demanded.
Eleanor looked at Danielle.
“The accident report. The original hospital records. And the recording your mother made before she disappeared.””
Danielle frowned.
“Mom, what recording?””
Eleanor's eyes filled.
“The night of the accident, you were sitting in the back seat. You had fallen asleep after dinner.””
Danielle shook her head.
“I don't remember.””
“You were sixteen. Daniel was driving. I was in the passenger seat.””
Richard looked at his brother.
“You told me Danielle was at home.””
Daniel said nothing.
Eleanor continued.
“We were coming back from a charity dinner. I had discovered that money was being stolen from the Ashford foundation. I confronted Daniel because his name appeared on several financial documents.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You don't know what you saw.””
Eleanor ignored him.
“He told me the transactions were authorized. Then he said he had proof that Richard had approved everything.””
Richard shook his head.
“I never approved anything.””
“I know that now.””
Danielle stepped closer.
“What happened next?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Daniel started arguing. He turned onto the old river road. It was raining. I told him to slow down.””
Daniel interrupted.
“You grabbed the steering wheel!””
Eleanor stared at him.
“Because you were trying to hit the barrier.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What?””
Daniel raised his voice.
“She was hysterical. She kept threatening to expose everyone. I was trying to get her to calm down.””
Eleanor's voice trembled.
“You told me that if I didn't sign the papers, Danielle would lose everything.””
Richard looked at his brother.
“What papers?””
“The transfer of my shares.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Richard, you have no idea what happened that night.””
Richard took a step toward him.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
The security officers had surrounded him.
He swallowed.
“The car hit the barrier. Eleanor was injured. Danielle was unconscious. I panicked.””
“You panicked?”” Richard repeated.
“You weren't there!””
“I was in Chicago because you told me you had everything under control!””
Daniel's voice rose.
“I was trying to protect the family!””
Eleanor shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
She turned toward Danielle.
“When the ambulance arrived, Daniel told the paramedics that I had died at the scene. But I was still alive.””
Richard looked horrified.
“Why didn't they take you to the hospital?””
“Because Daniel had arranged for a private medical team to meet us.””
Daniel shouted.
“That's a lie!””
Eleanor looked at him.
“Then why did you pay them?””
Daniel went silent.
Margaret, who had been listening from behind Richard, stepped forward.
“Do you have documentation?””
Eleanor nodded.
“It's in a secure storage facility. I gave copies to someone I trusted.””
Richard looked at her.
“Who?””
“Your former attorney. The one who resigned after the funeral.””
Richard frowned.
“Samuel Price?””
Eleanor nodded.
“He discovered the forged death certificate. He helped me disappear because someone was threatening Danielle.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And you didn't trust me?””
Eleanor looked at him.
“I trusted you with my life. I didn't trust the people surrounding you.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Richard looked down.
For three years, he had blamed himself for being absent that night.
Now he was discovering that his own family had been hiding an entire life from him.
Danielle suddenly pressed her fingers against her temple.
A sharp pain moved behind her eyes.
She saw something.
A windshield covered in rain.
A man's hand gripping the steering wheel.
Her mother's voice shouting.
Then a flash of headlights.
She gasped.
Richard immediately turned.
“Danielle?””
She grabbed the edge of the table.
“I remember something.””
Eleanor rushed toward her.
“What, sweetheart?””
Danielle's breathing became uneven.
“Uncle Daniel was talking to someone on the phone.””
Daniel's face changed.
Richard stared at him.
“Who?””
Danielle closed her eyes.
“I couldn't see the person. But I remember what he said.””
“What did he say?”” Eleanor asked.
Danielle swallowed.
“He said, 'The girl saw everything. We can't let her talk.''”
The room fell silent.
Daniel suddenly lunged toward the nearest security officer.
He shoved the man against the wall and ran toward the emergency exit.
“Stop him!”” Richard shouted.
Two officers chased him.
Daniel reached the door, but another security guard blocked his path.
A brief struggle followed.
His phone fell from his pocket and slid across the floor.
Brandon picked it up.
“Mr. Carter!””
Richard turned.
Brandon held up the device.
“The screen is still open.””
Richard approached.
A message conversation appeared.
The latest message had arrived less than a minute earlier.
*UNKNOWN:* Is the girl remembering anything?
Daniel's response was still being typed.
*DANIEL:* Not yet. But Eleanor has arrived.
Another message appeared.
*UNKNOWN:* Then finish what you started. We cannot let her identify the second person.
Richard stared at the screen.
“Who sent this?””
Brandon opened the contact information.
The number was saved under a name.
*CYNTHIA REED.*
Margaret looked up.
“Arthur's personal assistant?””
Brandon nodded.
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“Who is the second person?””
Daniel remained silent.
Eleanor slowly stepped closer.
“Richard, I think you need to see something.””
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed the interior of the car after the crash.
The windshield was shattered.
The passenger door was open.
And beside the wreckage stood a second person.
Someone holding a folder.
Someone whose face was clearly visible.
Richard stared at the image.
His hands began trembling.
Because the person standing beside the wreckage was not Daniel.
It was someone Richard had trusted for twenty years.
His own daughter looked at him.
“Daddy?””
Richard couldn't answer.

The photograph had revealed the identity of the person who had helped make his wife disappear.
And that person was already inside Ashford Country Club.
