Chapter 3: The Name on the Contract

Vanessa Whitmore had spent twenty years building an image.

She was the woman who arrived at charity galas in designer dresses.

The woman whose name appeared beside wealthy business owners in newspaper photographs.

The woman who could walk into a restaurant and have the manager personally bring her favorite wine.

Her catering company, Whitmore Events, was her greatest source of pride.

It had started as a small family business and grown into a company that handled weddings, corporate dinners, and luxury events.

But over the last year, business had become difficult.

Two major clients had canceled contracts.

A hotel had refused to renew her agreement.

Her bank had recently demanded additional financial documentation before extending a business credit line.

She needed a major contract.

And Richard Carter's hospitality group had offered her exactly that opportunity.

A twelve-month catering partnership.

Worth nearly two million dollars.

Vanessa had spent weeks preparing for the final presentation.

She had also learned that Richard's daughter would be reviewing the proposal.

But she had never imagined that the young woman standing in front of her that evening would be Nia.

She certainly hadn't imagined slapping her.

Now the printed proposal in Nia's hand seemed heavier than a stack of bricks.

Vanessa forced a smile.

"I think there's been some confusion.""

Nia looked at her.

"What confusion?""

"This is a business matter. It has nothing to do with what happened here.""

Nia's eyebrows lifted.

"You don't think your behavior has anything to do with whether my father trusts you to represent his company?""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"You're making this personal.""

Nia glanced at her cheek.

"Personal?""

She gently adjusted Amara's blanket.

"You hit me while I was holding my newborn daughter.""

Vanessa looked toward Marcus.

"Can you please get this woman out of here?""

Marcus didn't move.

He was staring at the phone.

Richard's voice filled the entrance again.

"Marcus, I want you to answer one more question.""

"Yes, sir.""

"Did you personally verify my daughter's reservation before ordering her to leave?""

Marcus hesitated.

"No, sir.""

"Did you ask her whether she had been assaulted?""

"No, sir.""

"Did you review the security footage?""

"No, sir.""

"Then what exactly did you investigate before deciding that she was the problem?""

Marcus looked down.

"I made a judgment based on the situation.""

Richard answered immediately.

"And what situation was that?""

Marcus swallowed.

"I—"

"Was it her clothing?""

Silence.

"Was it the baby?""

Silence.

"Or was it because Vanessa Whitmore told you that she didn't want to see her?""

Marcus's shoulders dropped.

"I apologize, sir.""

Nia looked at him.

"Don't apologize because you found out who my father is.""

Marcus raised his eyes.

"What?""

"Apologize because you treated me like I didn't deserve to be here.""

He said nothing.

Nia continued.

"If I had been a woman without money, without a powerful father, without a reservation confirmation, would you still have treated me this way?""

Marcus looked away.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"This is getting out of hand.""

Nia turned toward her.

"You started it.""

"I was protecting the atmosphere of the restaurant.""

"From a mother and her baby?""

"From someone who didn't fit the environment.""

A man near the bar muttered, "Unbelievable.""

Vanessa pointed at him.

"Will everyone please stop interfering?""

Then she looked directly at Nia.

"You need to understand something. I have been coming to this restaurant for years. I know the staff.

I know the owners. I know how this business works.""

Nia looked at the phone.

"My father is listening.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"Then perhaps he should explain why his daughter is behaving so unprofessionally.""

Richard answered before Nia could.

"Vanessa, I have been listening to you for several minutes. I suggest you stop speaking.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"You cannot talk to me like that.""

"I can, actually.""

"I'm a business partner.""

"Not anymore.""

The words landed like a dropped plate.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

"What did you say?""

Richard repeated himself.

"Your catering proposal is withdrawn from consideration.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You can't do that!""

"I can.""

"We have a signed preliminary agreement!""

"An agreement that specifically allows my company to terminate negotiations if a supplier's conduct raises serious concerns.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is because of her?""

Richard paused.

"This is because of you.""

Nia looked down at Amara.

She hadn't expected her father to cancel the contract immediately.

She also hadn't wanted to be responsible for someone's livelihood.

But she remembered the slap.

The fear in her daughter's cries.

The way Marcus had looked at her as if she were an inconvenience.

And she understood that her father wasn't punishing Vanessa for being rude.

He was protecting his business from someone who believed money made cruelty acceptable.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Richard.""

"Perhaps.""

"You have no idea how much work I've put into this.""

"I know exactly how much work my employees have put into building a company that treats people with respect.""

Vanessa pointed at Nia.

"She's manipulating you!""

Nia finally raised her voice.

"Stop blaming me for what you did.""

Vanessa fell silent.

Nia continued.

"I walked in here with a reservation. I asked for my table. You hit me.

Then you demanded that the manager remove me. None of that happened because I manipulated anyone.""

Her voice trembled, but she did not look away.

"You made a choice.""

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus quietly stepped toward the reception desk.

"Mr. Carter, I'd like to speak with you.""

"Go ahead.""

Marcus looked at Nia.

"I was wrong.""

Nia didn't answer.

"I should have checked the reservation. I should have intervened when Mrs. Whitmore struck you. I should have called security to protect you, not to remove you.""

His voice cracked slightly.

"I apologize.""

Nia looked at him for several seconds.

"Would you have said that if you hadn't heard my father's name?""

Marcus didn't respond.

"That's what you need to think about.""

A restaurant employee approached with a glass of water.

"Ma'am, would you like somewhere to sit?""

Nia nodded.

"Please. Somewhere quiet.""

The employee led her toward a small seating area near the window.

As she walked, guests moved aside.

One older woman touched Nia's arm gently.

"I'm so sorry, sweetheart.""

"Thank you.""

Another guest whispered, "You handled that beautifully.""

Nia didn't know what to say.

She simply sat down, placed Amara carefully against her shoulder, and took a breath.

For the first time in nearly twenty minutes, she could hear the soft piano music again.

But the confrontation wasn't over.

Marcus returned to the reception desk.

"Sir, there's another issue.""

Richard's voice came through the phone.

"What now?""

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Whitmore requested that we delete the incident from the guest complaint log.""

Vanessa spun around.

"Marcus!""

He continued.

"She also asked me to remove the reservation record before the evening manager reviewed it.""

Nia slowly looked up.

"Why would she do that?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Because she didn't want a record of what happened.""

Vanessa's face flushed.

"That's a lie!""

Marcus shook his head.

"I have the request on my work messages.""

Richard was silent for a moment.

Then he said, "Preserve everything.""

"Yes, sir.""

"Security footage. Reservation history. Messages. All of it.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"Richard, you are taking the word of a manager who is trying to save himself!""

Richard replied calmly.

"I'm taking the word of the security cameras.""

He continued.

"And I'm asking my legal department to review the incident.""

Vanessa looked around desperately.

Several guests still had their phones raised.

The woman who had first stood up to defend Nia approached the reception desk.

"My name is Elaine Foster," she said.

"I witnessed everything. I'll be happy to provide a statement.""

The older man from table six nodded.

"So will I.""

A young couple near the entrance also offered their names.

Vanessa stared at them.

"This is unbelievable.""

Then she turned toward Nia.

"Are you satisfied now?""

Nia shook her head.

"No.""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"I'm not satisfied. I wanted to have dinner with my daughter. I wanted to celebrate her being born. I wanted to spend one peaceful evening without someone deciding I didn't belong somewhere.""

Nia's eyes filled.

"That's all I wanted.""

Vanessa looked away.

For a moment, the room was completely still.

Then Richard spoke.

"Nia, sweetheart?""

"Yes, Dad?""

"I'm sorry.""

Nia closed her eyes.

"You didn't do anything.""

"I wasn't there when you needed me.""

"You answered when I called.""

Richard took a breath.

"That's not enough. But I'm on my way.""

Nia looked toward the glass entrance.

"Okay.""

Vanessa suddenly straightened.

"You're coming here?""

Richard answered.

"Yes.""

"There's no need for that. We can settle this professionally.""

"We'll see.""

The call ended.

Nia stared at the dark phone screen.

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

Vanessa began pacing.

"How long until he gets here?""

Marcus checked his watch.

"I don't know.""

"Find out.""

"I don't have that information.""

"Then call his office!""

Marcus didn't move.

Vanessa grabbed her handbag from the reception counter.

"This is a nightmare.""

Nia looked at her.

"Where are you going?""

Vanessa stopped.

"Home.""

"Why?""

"Because I don't need to stand here and be insulted.""

Nia gave a small, disbelieving laugh.

"You don't need to stand here? You were happy to make me stand here while you insulted me.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Don't push me.""

Nia immediately looked down at Amara.

Then she slowly looked back up.

"You've already done enough.""

Vanessa turned toward the doors.

But before she could take another step, Marcus's office phone rang.

He answered.

"Sterling Room. This is Marcus.""

He listened.

His expression changed.

"Yes, sir.""

A pause.

"Understood.""

He slowly lowered the receiver.

Vanessa turned.

"What?""

Marcus looked at her.

Then at Nia.

"The owner has instructed us to lock the entrance doors to preserve the scene until the security team arrives.""

Vanessa frowned.

"Why?""

Marcus's voice was barely audible.

"Because Mr. Carter isn't coming alone.""

Nia looked toward the glass doors.

Outside, headlights swept across the marble floor.

A black luxury SUV had just pulled up to the entrance.

And beside it, another vehicle had stopped.

Marcus stared at the approaching figures.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared on the screen from the company's corporate director.

He read it once.

Then twice.

His hands began to shake.

*Effective immediately: Marcus Reed is suspended pending investigation.*

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

Her lips parted.

But the next message made her face turn completely white.

It was addressed to the entire management team.

*Do not allow Vanessa Whitmore to leave before the owner arrives. The security footage contains something that requires immediate explanation.*

Nia tightened her arms around her daughter.

She had come to the restaurant expecting dinner.

May you like

Now she was about to discover that the slap was only the beginning of a much bigger scandal.

And whatever the cameras had recorded before she arrived might be the one thing Vanessa Whitmore could never explain.
