Chapter 5: The Reservation That Exposed Everything
Richard took the document from Olivia.
He read the handwritten note once.
Then again.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Nia noticed immediately.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
"What is it?""
Richard looked at her.
"Who made this reservation for you?""
"I did.""
"Did you speak with anyone from the restaurant?""
"Only the receptionist when I booked it.""
Richard turned the paper toward Olivia.
"Explain this.""
Olivia examined the handwriting.
"The priority designation was added manually. The note says the guest should receive the private dining experience, complimentary dessert, and a welcome arrangement.""
Nia smiled faintly.
"Dad, you were planning something?""
Richard looked at her.
"I asked the restaurant to prepare a small welcome dinner for you and Amara.""
Nia's eyes widened.
"You did?""
He nodded.
"I wanted your first proper outing with her to be special.""
For the first time that evening, Nia's expression softened.
She remembered receiving a message from her father a few days earlier.
I have a little surprise planned for you. Just show up at eight.
She had assumed he meant dinner.
She hadn't realized he had arranged something personal.
Richard looked at the document again.
"But someone changed the instructions.""
Olivia pointed to a line beneath the original note.
"There's an additional entry.""
She read it aloud.
"Guest must not be seated until approval is obtained from Mrs. Whitmore.""
Richard slowly lifted his head.
"Why would my daughter need Vanessa Whitmore's approval to sit at a table in my restaurant?""
Nobody answered.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"I can explain that.""
Richard turned toward her.
"I'm listening.""
She adjusted her dress.
"I had reserved the private booth for a business meeting. I was expecting important guests. I simply didn't want the atmosphere disturbed.""
Nia looked at the paper.
"My reservation was made three weeks before yours.""
Vanessa frowned.
"That doesn't matter.""
"Actually, it does.""
Nia looked at Olivia.
"Can you check when Mrs. Whitmore booked the private booth?""
Olivia tapped the tablet.
"One moment.""
She searched the system.
Then she looked up.
"The private booth was reserved five days ago.""
Nia nodded.
"Thank you.""
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"I had a right to reserve a private area.""
"Of course," Nia replied.
"But you didn't have a right to cancel my confirmed reservation.""
Vanessa threw up her hands.
"This is unbelievable. Everyone is acting as if I committed some terrible crime because I wanted privacy.""
Richard looked at her.
"Nobody is accusing you of a crime for wanting privacy.""
He pointed toward the footage.
"We're discussing the slap, the false complaint, the attempted removal of a confirmed guest, and the document you tried to have removed.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.
"I have been a loyal customer here for years.""
Richard nodded.
"And I've appreciated your business.""
"Then why are you treating me like this?""
"Because loyalty is not a license to mistreat people.""
Vanessa looked toward the dining room.
The guests were still watching.
She lowered her voice.
"Can we please discuss this somewhere private?""
Richard considered her request.
Then he shook his head.
"Not until my daughter decides she's comfortable with that.""
Vanessa turned toward Nia.
"Please.""
The sudden change in her tone was almost disturbing.
The woman who had slapped Nia now looked desperate for her cooperation.
"Let's not ruin each other's lives over a misunderstanding.""
Nia stared at her.
"You're calling this a misunderstanding?""
Vanessa nodded quickly.
"I was upset. I had a stressful day. I shouldn't have reacted that way.""
Nia looked down at her baby.
Then back at Vanessa.
"You didn't just react badly. You looked at me and decided I didn't belong here.""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nia continued.
"You didn't know my name. You didn't know why I was here. You didn't know anything about me. But you decided my clothes and my baby made me less worthy of respect.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"I said I was sorry.""
"No, you didn't.""
The silence that followed was uncomfortable.
Richard gently touched Nia's shoulder.
"Take your time, sweetheart.""
Nia nodded.
She wasn't ready to forgive.
And she wasn't interested in pretending otherwise.
Olivia stepped forward.
"Mr. Carter, there's another issue regarding the handwritten instruction.""
Richard looked at her.
"What now?""
"The system shows that the modification was entered using Marcus Reed's manager credentials.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa immediately pointed at him.
"There! That's what I've been saying. He made the decision!""
Marcus looked at her in disbelief.
"You asked me to change it.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I did not.""
Marcus turned toward Richard.
"Sir, I can show you the messages.""
Olivia nodded.
"We already recovered them.""
She displayed a series of internal messages.
The first was from Vanessa.
The woman arriving tonight cannot be seated beside me.
Marcus had responded:
Her reservation is already confirmed.
Vanessa replied:
Then change it.
Marcus:
I need authorization.
Vanessa:
I will make sure you are protected. Just handle it.
Richard stared at the screen.
"Marcus, did you change the reservation?""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"Yes, sir.""
"Why?""
"I believed Mrs. Whitmore had enough influence with corporate to make trouble for me.""
Richard's voice remained calm.
"So you decided to sacrifice a guest to protect your position.""
Marcus looked down.
"Yes, sir.""
Richard turned toward Olivia.
"Add this to the investigation.""
Olivia nodded.
Then she scrolled farther down.
Her expression changed.
"Mr. Carter?""
"What?""
"There's a message from Vanessa that was sent before Nia arrived.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Those messages are private.""
Olivia didn't look up.
"They were sent through the restaurant's internal management system.""
Richard nodded.
"Read it.""
Olivia hesitated.
Then she did.
If the young woman asks about the Carter dinner, tell her the private arrangement has been canceled. Do not mention the owner's welcome package.
Nia frowned.
"Dad, why would she say that?""
Richard looked at Olivia.
"Keep going.""
Olivia opened the next message.
It was sent thirty minutes later.
Make sure she leaves before the owner hears about the reservation.
Nia's face changed.
"She knew I was your daughter?""
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No. I didn't know that.""
Nia looked at the message.
"Then why did you mention the owner?""
Vanessa stared at her.
Richard stepped forward.
"Answer her.""
Vanessa looked around.
"I was told someone important was coming.""
"Who told you?""
She remained silent.
Olivia opened another record.
"There's a name attached to the original instruction.""
Richard leaned toward the tablet.
The name was unfamiliar to Nia.
But it made Olivia visibly uncomfortable.
"Mr. Carter, the instruction came from someone in the executive office.""
Richard frowned.
"Whose account?""
Olivia turned the screen toward him.
Richard read the name.
His expression became unreadable.
Nia noticed.
"Dad?""
He slowly looked up.
"Someone in my company knew you were coming tonight.""
"Who?""
Richard didn't answer immediately.
He looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
Then Olivia.
"Who had access to the owner reservation schedule?""
Olivia checked.
"Three people. You, me, and the regional operations director.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Name?""
"David Mercer.""
Nia had heard that name before.
David Mercer was Richard's longtime regional director.
He had attended family celebrations, corporate dinners, and even Nia's graduation party.
He had been working with Richard for almost fifteen years.
"Dad," Nia whispered.
"David knows me.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"Yes. He does.""
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"David told me the reservation was important.""
Richard turned toward her.
"What exactly did he tell you?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"He said a young woman was coming tonight and that the private booth needed to remain available.""
"Did he tell you her name?""
"No.""
"Did he tell you why?""
"He said she was connected to an internal business matter.""
Richard stared at her.
"Then why did you attack her?""
Vanessa looked away.
"I thought she was someone trying to get special treatment.""
Nia's voice became quiet.
"Even if I had been a stranger, that wouldn't have made it acceptable.""
Vanessa said nothing.
Richard looked toward Olivia.
"Call David Mercer.""
Olivia picked up her phone.
She dialed the number.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a man's voice answered.
"Olivia? What's happening?""
Olivia placed the call on speaker.
"David, Mr. Carter is here.""
There was a pause.
"Richard? Is everything okay?""
Richard leaned toward the phone.
"No, David. It isn't.""
"What's happened?""
"Why did you instruct Vanessa Whitmore to interfere with my daughter's reservation?""
Silence.
Then David laughed nervously.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"That's what everyone keeps telling me.""
David cleared his throat.
"I was only trying to protect the restaurant's reputation.""
"From what?""
"A situation involving a guest.""
"Which guest?""
David didn't answer.
Richard continued.
"Did you know Nia Carter was coming tonight?""
A long silence followed.
Then David said something that made Nia's stomach drop.
"Richard, I think you should ask your daughter why she really chose tonight to come to the restaurant.""
Nia looked at her father.
"What does that mean?""
David's voice lowered.
"Because there's something she hasn't told you.""
Richard stared at the phone.
"Explain yourself.""
But David didn't.
Instead, he ended the call.
Olivia immediately tried calling back.
No answer.
Richard looked at Nia.
"Sweetheart, what is he talking about?""
Nia's face had gone pale.
She looked down at Amara.
Then she slowly reached into her brown shoulder bag.
There was something inside she had brought with her that evening.
Something she had intended to show her father after dinner.
A sealed envelope.
She placed it on the table.
"Dad, I was going to tell you tonight.""
Richard looked at the envelope.
"What is it?""
Nia took a shaky breath.
"It's about the restaurant.""
May you like
She pushed the envelope toward him.
"And I think David knows what's inside.""
