Chapter 6: The Secret Inside the Envelope
Richard stared at the envelope.
It was plain white, slightly creased at the edges, with his name written across the front in Nia's handwriting.
He didn't open it immediately.
Instead, he looked at his daughter.
"Why didn't you tell me before tonight?""
Nia adjusted Amara against her shoulder.
"Because I wanted to be certain.""
"Certain of what?""
"That I wasn't misunderstanding what I found.""
Richard pulled out a chair.
"Sit down, sweetheart.""
Nia settled into the chair beside the window.
Olivia stood nearby, while the restaurant's security supervisor quietly positioned himself near the entrance.
Vanessa remained beside the reception desk.
Marcus had been asked to surrender his manager access card.
Nobody was leaving.
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside were printed invoices, photographs, and several pages of handwritten notes.
He read the first page.
His eyebrows drew together.
Then he turned to the second.
His expression became colder.
"Nia, where did you get these?""
"From the restaurant's supplier records.""
Richard looked up.
"You've been reviewing our supplier records?""
"Not secretly. I was helping with a business research project. You asked me to look at some of the hospitality operations last month.""
Richard nodded.
He remembered.
Nia had been studying business administration and had recently expressed interest in learning more about his company.
He had offered her access to selected operational reports.
She had declined a permanent position but agreed to review some financial records as an independent project.
Richard had thought she was simply interested in learning.
Now he realized she had discovered something.
Nia pointed to the invoices.
"These are from Whitmore Events.""
Vanessa immediately straightened.
"What?""
Nia continued.
"Several of the charges didn't match the event schedules.""
Richard turned another page.
The first invoice showed a catering service for a corporate dinner involving one hundred and twenty guests.
The second listed food and staffing for a hotel opening.
The third claimed to cover a private charity reception.
But the dates were wrong.
Nia explained.
"I checked the event calendars against the invoices. Two of those events were canceled before they happened. The third was handled by another supplier.""
Olivia stepped closer.
"Are you certain?""
Nia nodded.
"I have the original event schedules.""
Richard studied the paperwork.
"How much did we pay?""
"About one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""
Olivia looked up sharply.
"That's the same amount appearing in the preliminary audit.""
Nia nodded.
"Because I found the payments before the audit began.""
Richard leaned back.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at his daughter.
"Why didn't you send this to me immediately?""
Nia lowered her eyes.
"I tried.""
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"I emailed the report to the executive office.""
"Which email?""
Nia pulled out her phone.
She opened her sent folder and showed him.
The message had been addressed to David Mercer.
The subject line read:
Urgent: Discrepancies in Whitmore Events Supplier Invoices.
Richard looked at the date.
Three weeks earlier.
He looked at the next message.
Then the next.
There were four emails.
No replies.
Nia's voice became quieter.
"I called his office twice. His assistant said he was reviewing it.""
Richard looked at Olivia.
"Did you ever receive these reports?""
"No, sir.""
"Did compliance?""
Olivia shook her head.
"No.""
Richard looked back at the phone.
"David intercepted them.""
Nia nodded.
"I think so.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
It was an ugly, desperate sound.
"This is insane. You're accusing me of fraud because your daughter doesn't like me.""
Nia looked at her.
"I didn't know who you were when I found the invoices.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Then why did you bring them here tonight?""
"Because Dad invited me to dinner.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Nia took a breath.
"I wanted to tell him in person. I didn't want to send another email that might disappear.""
Richard placed the documents on the table.
"Vanessa, did your company submit these invoices?""
She hesitated.
"They were submitted by my accounting department.""
"Did you approve them?""
"My company has many employees.""
"Did you approve them?""
Vanessa's lips tightened.
"I don't remember every invoice.""
Olivia opened her tablet.
"We can verify the approval records.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""
Olivia remained composed.
"No. I'm doing my job.""
Richard turned toward the compliance director.
"Secure the original accounting records. No one is to alter or delete anything.""
"Understood.""
He then looked at Vanessa.
"Your company will receive a formal notice requesting documentation for every disputed payment.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You can't suspend my contract and investigate me based on a report from someone who barely understands the business.""
Nia quietly replied.
"I understand enough to know that a canceled event cannot be billed as if it happened.""
Vanessa stared at her.
"You little—"
Richard stood.
"Finish that sentence carefully.""
Vanessa closed her mouth.
At that moment, the restaurant's security supervisor approached.
"Mr. Carter?""
Richard turned.
"Yes?""
"We reviewed the entrance footage from earlier today. There's something you should see.""
Olivia frowned.
"Another recording?""
The supervisor nodded.
"It's from the loading dock camera.""
Richard gestured for him to continue.
"Bring it up.""
The supervisor connected a small device to the display system.
The screen showed the restaurant's rear entrance.
A delivery van was parked beside the loading area.
Two employees unloaded several boxes.
Then a man appeared.
He was wearing a dark coat and carrying a leather folder.
Nia leaned closer.
She recognized him immediately.
"That's David.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
The footage showed David entering through the staff door.
A few minutes later, he came back outside.
He was speaking on his phone.
The supervisor increased the volume.
David's voice became audible.
"She'll be there at eight. Just make sure she doesn't get seated.""
A pause.
Then he said:
"No, Vanessa. I don't care what you have to do. Just keep her away from the owner.""
Nia's mouth fell open.
Richard turned slowly toward Vanessa.
Vanessa took a step backward.
"That doesn't prove anything.""
The recording continued.
David's voice came through again.
"And don't let her see the paperwork.""
Then he ended the call and walked toward his car.
Richard looked at the supervisor.
"How long ago was this?""
"Four hours ago.""
"Preserve it.""
"Yes, sir.""
Richard turned toward Vanessa.
"Why was David instructing you to keep my daughter away from me?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"You're on the recording.""
"I was following instructions.""
"From whom?""
She looked down.
Richard stepped closer.
"Vanessa, I'm giving you one opportunity to tell me the truth.""
Her eyes filled.
"I didn't know what was in those invoices.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She looked toward Marcus.
He was standing near the reception desk, holding his suspended access card.
Then she looked at Nia.
And something in her expression changed.
Fear.
Not of losing the catering contract.
Not of being embarrassed in front of wealthy customers.
Something much deeper.
"David told me your daughter was going to cause problems," Vanessa said.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Why?""
"He said she had been asking questions about the supplier payments.""
Nia's heart began pounding.
Vanessa continued.
"He told me that if she came to the restaurant, I should make sure she didn't get access to the private dining area.""
Richard stared at her.
"Why the private dining area?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because that's where the documents were supposed to be.""
Olivia stepped forward.
"What documents?""
Vanessa looked toward the manager's office.
Then she whispered:
"The original supplier contracts.""
Richard turned toward the office.
"Are they still there?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I think so.""
The security supervisor immediately moved toward the corridor.
But before he reached the office, Marcus spoke.
"Wait.""
Everyone turned.
Marcus's face was pale.
"I know what you're looking for.""
Richard looked at him.
"What?""
Marcus swallowed.
"David came into the restaurant this afternoon. He asked me to open the private dining room and remove a locked folder from the cabinet.""
Nia stood slowly.
"Did you remove it?""
Marcus shook his head.
"No. I told him I didn't have authorization.""
"Then what happened?""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"He gave me a key.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"What key?""
Marcus reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small brass key attached to a black tag.
"I found it on my desk after he left.""
Olivia took the key.
"Where does this open?""
Marcus looked toward the private dining room.
"The cabinet behind the wine display.""
Richard turned toward the security supervisor.
"Go with Olivia. Open it. Photograph everything before touching anything.""
They hurried away.
Nia remained beside her father.
"Dad, I think David has been hiding something.""
Richard looked down at her.
"I think you're right.""
"But why would he involve Vanessa?""
Richard's expression darkened.
"Because someone has been using my company without my knowledge.""
Nia looked at the envelope.
"Do you think there's more?""
Richard didn't answer.
Then Olivia's voice echoed from the corridor.
"Mr. Carter!""
Everyone turned.
She appeared at the doorway holding a thick black folder.
Her face was completely pale.
"You're going to want to see this.""
Richard walked toward her.
"What is it?""
Olivia opened the folder.
Inside were original contracts, bank transfer records, and a series of printed emails.
She placed the first document on the reception counter.
Richard read the heading.
Then his eyes moved to the signature at the bottom.
He stopped breathing for a moment.
Nia stepped closer.
"What is it, Dad?""
Richard turned the paper toward her.
It was an authorization document approving payments to Whitmore Events.
The amount was not one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
It was nearly six hundred thousand.
And beneath the authorization was Richard's name.
His signature.
But Richard hadn't signed it.
He looked at Olivia.
"Who submitted this?""
Olivia checked the digital record.
"David Mercer.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
Then he noticed something else.
The authorization had been approved using a company account associated with his personal executive office.
Nia looked at her father.
"Someone forged your signature.""
Richard stared at the document.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely shaken.
Then Olivia turned to the final page.
"There's one more thing.""
Richard lifted his head.
"What?""
Olivia placed a printed email beside the forged authorization.
It was dated two months earlier.
The sender was David Mercer.
The recipient was Vanessa Whitmore.
And the subject line read:
*Project Carter — Final Payment Before Discovery.*
Richard read the first sentence.
His face went cold.
Nia leaned over his shoulder.
And when she saw the words beneath the subject line, she realized the woman in fuchsia wasn't the only person who had planned to destroy her father's business.
David had been preparing something much bigger.
May you like
And the final sentence of his email was chilling.
Once Richard discovers what happened, it will already be too late to stop the transfer.
