Chapter 4: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed to See

The black SUV stopped directly outside The Sterling Room.

Through the glass doors, Nia watched two men in dark suits step out. One carried a leather briefcase. The other spoke briefly into an earpiece before opening the rear passenger door.

A tall, silver-haired man emerged.

Richard Carter.

Nia hadn't seen her father in person for almost two weeks. Since Amara's birth, their conversations had mostly consisted of video calls, late-night messages, and photographs of the baby sleeping.

But the moment she saw him, something inside her loosened.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't waving.

He was looking directly at her.

And when he noticed the swelling on her cheek, his expression changed.

He entered the restaurant with two executives and a woman carrying a tablet.

Marcus immediately straightened.

"Good evening, Mr. Carter.""

Richard didn't acknowledge him.

He walked straight toward Nia.

"Sweetheart.""

"Dad.""

He gently touched her shoulder, careful not to disturb the baby.

"Let me see your face.""

"Dad, I'm okay.""

He examined the red mark.

"That doesn't look okay.""

Nia tried to smile.

"It's just a slap.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Nobody gets to put their hands on you and call it just anything.""

He looked down at Amara.

"And there's my beautiful granddaughter.""

Nia adjusted the blanket.

"She's been waiting to meet you properly.""

Richard smiled for the first time that evening.

He bent down and kissed the baby's forehead.

"Hello, princess. Grandpa's here.""

Amara moved her tiny hand against his jacket.

Richard's eyes glistened.

For a moment, the restaurant disappeared.

Then he stood upright and turned toward Marcus.

"Now.""

One word.

Marcus swallowed.

"Yes, sir?""

"Show me the footage.""

The woman with the tablet stepped forward.

"I'm Olivia Grant, head of corporate compliance. I've already secured the entrance recordings, reception logs, and the internal communications system.""

Richard nodded.

"Good. Let's start with the entrance camera.""

Vanessa hurried forward.

"Richard, before you do that, I think we should discuss what happened.""

He looked at her.

"Did you strike my daughter?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I was trying to maintain order.""

"That wasn't my question.""

"She was being difficult.""

Richard turned toward Olivia.

"Play the footage.""

Olivia tapped the tablet.

A large screen above the reception desk came alive.

The first recording showed Nia entering the restaurant.

She was holding Amara, carrying her brown shoulder bag, and speaking politely to the receptionist.

The receptionist checked something on the computer.

Then she smiled and gestured toward the dining room.

Everything looked normal.

Until Vanessa entered the frame.

She approached Nia, looked at her clothing, and began speaking.

The audio was clear.

"Are you sure you're supposed to be here?""

Nia answered politely.

"I have a reservation.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"People like you should check the dress code before walking into places like this.""

A murmur spread through the restaurant.

Richard stared at the screen.

The footage continued.

Vanessa pointed toward the exit.

Nia shook her head.

Then came the slap.

The sound was unmistakable.

Amara's tiny body jerked against her mother's chest.

Nia stepped backward, almost losing her balance.

Richard closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he looked at Olivia.

"Save that recording.""

"Already done.""

"Make a copy for the authorities.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That footage doesn't show the whole situation.""

Olivia looked at her.

"It has audio and multiple camera angles.""

Vanessa turned toward Marcus.

"Tell them what happened before that.""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Richard noticed.

"Go ahead, Marcus. Tell us.""

Marcus cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Whitmore complained about the guest.""

"What did she complain about?""

"She said the guest was making her uncomfortable.""

"Did Nia threaten her?""

"No.""

"Did Nia touch her?""

"No.""

"Did Nia raise her voice?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Not initially.""

Richard folded his arms.

"Then what happened?""

Marcus looked down.

"I was instructed to remove her.""

"By whom?""

"Mrs. Whitmore.""

Vanessa interrupted.

"I didn't instruct him to do anything illegal!""

Richard turned toward her.

"Nobody mentioned illegal.""

Her mouth snapped shut.

Olivia changed the recording.

This time, the footage came from a camera positioned behind the reception desk.

It showed Marcus approaching Nia.

It showed him standing between her and the dining room.

Then it showed something nobody had expected.

Before Marcus ordered Nia to leave, he glanced toward the private dining area.

A server approached him.

They exchanged a few words.

Olivia paused the recording.

"Can you hear this?""

She increased the volume.

The server's voice came through.

"Mr. Reed, the Carter reservation is confirmed. Should I prepare table seven?""

Marcus answered.

"No. Hold it.""

The server frowned.

"Why?""

Marcus glanced toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Whitmore doesn't want her seated there.""

The server hesitated.

"But Mr. Carter personally approved—"

"Just do what I said.""

The footage stopped.

Nia looked at Marcus.

"You knew my reservation was confirmed before you asked me to leave?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Richard stared at him.

"Is that true?""

Marcus rubbed his palms against his trousers.

"Yes, sir.""

"Then why did you lie?""

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

"Because she threatened to complain to corporate.""

Vanessa exploded.

"I did not threaten you!""

Marcus finally turned toward her.

"You said you'd make sure I lost my position if I didn't handle the situation.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You ungrateful little—"

"Enough," Richard said.

The word cut through the room.

Olivia tapped the tablet again.

"There's another recording.""

Richard nodded.

"Play it.""

The screen changed.

This time, the camera showed the service corridor.

Vanessa was standing beside a waiter, holding a small black folder.

She handed him something.

The waiter looked inside.

Then he shook his head.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Nobody needs to know.""

The waiter stepped back.

"I can't do that, Mrs. Whitmore.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"You're making a mistake.""

The recording ended.

Richard looked at Olivia.

"Who was that employee?""

"Daniel Brooks. He's currently working in the kitchen.""

"Bring him here.""

Vanessa's face had become rigid.

"Why are you dragging other employees into this?""

Richard turned toward her.

"Because I want to know why you're so interested in controlling what happens inside my restaurant.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"I was simply discussing an event.""

"Which event?""

She didn't answer.

Olivia opened another document on her tablet.

"Mr. Carter, I reviewed the preliminary supplier records. There's something else.""

Richard looked at her.

"What?""

"The Whitmore Events contract.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"That is confidential business information.""

Olivia continued.

"According to the records, the company has submitted invoices for several events that appear to have never taken place.""

Marcus looked up sharply.

Vanessa spun toward Olivia.

"That's a lie.""

Olivia remained calm.

"Three separate invoices. Different dates. Different event descriptions. Same bank account.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"How much?""

"Approximately one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

A stunned silence spread across the entrance.

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is ridiculous. Those were legitimate expenses.""

Olivia looked at her tablet.

"Then you'll have no difficulty providing the supporting documentation.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around her handbag.

Richard turned toward his compliance director.

"Freeze all pending payments until the review is complete.""

Vanessa's voice rose.

"You cannot freeze my money!""

"Payments from my company can be suspended while disputed invoices are investigated.""

"You are destroying my business!""

Richard looked directly at her.

"No, Vanessa. I'm investigating what you've done with my money.""

At that moment, a young waiter entered the reception area.

He looked nervous.

"Mr. Carter?""

Richard turned.

"Are you Daniel?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Come here.""

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

She immediately looked away.

Richard noticed.

"Did Mrs. Whitmore ask you to do something in the service corridor?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes, sir.""

"What?""

Daniel looked at Nia.

Then at the manager.

Then he answered.

"She asked me to remove a document from the reservation desk.""

Nia frowned.

"What document?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"A printed copy of your reservation confirmation.""

Nia's stomach tightened.

Richard stepped closer.

"Why?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Because Mrs. Whitmore said she didn't want anyone discovering that your reservation had been approved before you arrived.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

Richard asked another question.

"Did you remove it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No, sir.""

"Why not?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because I saw the note attached to it.""

Nia blinked.

"What note?""

Daniel looked at her.

"It said the reservation had been personally authorized by Mr. Carter.""

He paused.

"Under special instructions.""

Richard frowned.

"What special instructions?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked toward Olivia.

"I think you should see the second page.""

And when Olivia unfolded the document, her expression changed.

Because the reservation hadn't simply been approved.

It had been assigned a special designation.

One that only appeared when the restaurant was hosting someone connected to the company's ownership.

At the bottom of the page were four words.

*Owner's Family — Priority Guest.*

And beside those words was a handwritten instruction that made Richard's face go completely still.
